Moderately interesting to me if it's easy to make it play my huge backlog of DRM-free indie games as opposed to just what I have Steam keys for. Though in the end I think I'd mostly rather play with a good ergonomic controller and a TV.

Steam has an offline mode. It’s just not nearly as intuitive as how consoles handle it.
Yeah, but that's not a guarantee this will support it.

My research reveals: The screen is a touchscreen!

Yeah, but that's not a guarantee this will support it.

The line seems to be this is just a PC and everything Steam normally does, so I believe that's an implicit yes. They also said you can install any software you could on a PC so I imagine say, you could download all your DRM free games off GOG Galaxy and play those offline even if you can't access SteamOS (or it's a pain in the butt to do so).

Yeah, looks that way. I am very excited about this device!

From what I can see this is pretty cheap for what it is. It's a proper PC in that form factor. It'll emulate up to Gamecube / Wii without breaking a sweat. I'm not pre-ordering or anything, but depending on other people's impressions I may well end up getting one.

This is pretty interesting to me.

If it actually runs triple-A games at good settings, even moreso.

But most of all, if it connects to the TV...!

Ugh maybe I really should just make a little PC nook at my TV and move it there when I want to game. D:

Specs are nice and all, but this thing won’t last two years before Valve stops supporting it completely and doesn’t make an upgrade that will be necessary.

I am very pleased with the Steam Link hardware I got from Falselogic, but fortunately it doesn’t require updates to just stream stuff from my actual PC. Since my computer and Link are connected both via Ethernet playing Steam games on my couch has been fantastic.

For now my in bed playing machine will remain Switch only. Those ergonomics look… less than stellar to me.

Part of the Switch’s appeal for me is that I can take the Joy Cons off and then use one of those phone arms to hold the screen up and use a controller laying down.

I am glad that it looks like it will fill a needed niche in here judging from the replies though

If it runs Bloodstained even half-decently I'll probably look into this, because I would like something I can kinda replace my definitely aging laptop with that can still be a primary games device.

I've been debating getting a cheap gaming laptop to play all my Steam games that won't play on my Mac anymore and this could fill that need. I'm interested, but would want to hold it, read some reviews and confirm that my games do work on it first.

I like the idea, but the implementation is borderline doggydoo (look at the positioning of that d-pad; how are you even supposed to use that???). And considering Valve's well documented history of orphaning literally everything it makes, and does so quicker than your standard Asian Android phone maker, investing in one of these seems like the worst idea this side of the Jaguar or the Virtual Boy.

I'm tentatively interested in this as an relatively affordable alternative to trying to figure out PC Gaming, but I'll be waiting for actual impressions and reviews to see how it actually runs (and then waiting, I suppose, about a year for it to be available without scalpers buying up all the available units)

I'm...preeeetty sure I'm going to buy this. The $399 price for the cheap model goes down easy compared to what else is on the market and you can slam an affordable SD card in there for extended storage.

Oh, nice. I didn't know Steam had an OS. Shows what I know about PC gaming lol

As to which version to buy, one thing to keep in mind is that PC games aren’t made with running from SD cards in mind, so they might be a) slower from the SD card, and b) murder on the SD card. Might be best to use that for older games or emulation.

I might be interested in this as an emulation box but good lord that button placement looks hellish. Those track pads are crowding everything else out.

Do we know if the internal storage is expandable? I'm leaning towards actually getting one of the 64 gb ones, but this would tip over into definitely getting one if I can get inside the thing and tinker with it. I've never bought any Valve hardware, so I have no idea how they typically handle this sort of thing.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought that. My initial reaction was those buttons look like they're placed really high on the device.

There are also four completely programmable buttons on the back of the unit in the hand grip area. So, that might be a fix for the odd placement of the face buttons?

Can't know of course because I haven't actually held it but I could see them being useful in that sense.

IGN has a Q&A up and it's confirmed that the internal storage is not expandable/replaceable (and neither is anything else in the device). They have the SD card slot for additional storage only.

They have the video embedded towards the end of this article if it's helpful:

Ah, okay, thank you! I don't do too much high end gaming, so I'll probably try to get the 256 gb one and put the older games on an sd card.

Well! The Steam store is broken, as usually happens when we get this sort of rush.

Is there a limit to when you can preorder? Like if I dont do this today am I screwed? I mean if it is I'll probably just pass. Nothing is worth the hell that is reloading shit web pages. But if I can preorder in a week or so I will.

Kazin

Well, preorders open up for "anyone" on Sunday, so presumably you'll still be able to preorder at that point, and hopefully after that, too. I assume Steam is just overloaded at the moment, and you could probably preorder one later today.
