Star Trek: Lower Decks

Yuuup. It's beyond weird that the best Star Trek made in the last decade plus is a goofy cartoon comedy that initially sold itself as being Rick & Morty adjacent, but here we are and it works 100%.

I don't know if this is a thing in other Trek games, but the scoring missions by percentage felt like it could have been a nod to the 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites PC adventure games.

I just started watching the first episode of S2, and "They are showing me LIGHTS!" made me laugh way more than it should have. Also, haven't seen the intro in such a long time, that it made me laugh again (I'll probably never NOT find it funny, how they just fly away from the Borg cube). God, I just start and feel at home.

What a great show. It's not only the best Star Trek show in ages (which is kind of crazy), but also probably the funniest show I have seen in forever.

This strikes me as extremely plausible considering how deep the cuts are on average in this show and how clearly knowledgeable the staff is about all things Star Trek, but it's also one of those things that would just be impossible to really confirm 100% so I'll say it's my head-canon.

Fearful asymmetry
Every time there's an opportunity to make the ship seem majestic in the introduction, something happens to the Cerritos that makes the crew seem cowardly, incompetent, or otherwise hapless. The show knows exactly what it is and it's not afraid to drive home the point from the very start.

So friggin' good. There's like a million little moments that are all tied for my absolute favorite. Like the part where Ruthorford has to calm papa bear down from his Occupation flashbacks. "FIGHTING FASCISM IS A FULLTIME JOB!!!"

By end I was moved!
Like the battle at end, with TOS movie style music, then all the lower Decks independently saving the day. It was incredible. I was prepared by first half for just the humour, but by end...
Wow!

Yeah that was a killer episode. I hope we get more of the hothead Vulcan who plays by her own rules. Please transfer her to the Cerritos!

I also legitimately love that we’ve twice had a ship battle where the strategy is to hold steady until an actual battle ship arrives. It’s cool to have a Star Trek where the ship is not kitted for fights.

If T'Lyn doesn't end up on the Cerritos, I'll eat a rocket boot. Only question I see is, if she's gonna get to be a frequently used character, or maybe even main-cast tier, or if she'll just become a background character you see once in a while like Jennifer. I'm hoping for main character tier, she's fun.

I'm caught up. I know, this is old news, but I still love that we finally have this type of ST show. It's so nice, to learn about other people than a top crew in a top ship.

Also, love that cat doctor got more screentime this season. She is so great. Loved her version of Pon Farr.

Last episode was great. That Vulcan ship looked AMAZING, and even inside, something stuck with me. It had a very weird TOS feel, for some reason.

Not sure what else to say. Just love this show, and the freedom it has, to show us this universe from a different angle.

So... Did you watch the Ready Room discussion?
I try to avoid those. Anything noteworthy in it? I posted that picture 45% in reference to the Master Grade USS Cerritos with just its inner frame but the whole episode left me in shambles, it hit every note perfectly for me.

Also: cetacean ops. Was hoping they were xindi aquatic!
Nah, I like this way more. It really fits well into the whole enlightened humanity thing, where we've recognized the sentience of other fellow animals and redefined/expanded our idea of society so that we all can coexist and thrive together. It's the logical outcome from The Voyage Home as well.

Also on a side note, I've never really understood the Xindi situation. Sometimes they're discussed in ENT like they were all once descended from the same hominids that then branched out and diverged in their evolution. If that's the case, it would be inappropriate to categorize the Aquatic Xindi as Cetaceans, taxonomically speaking. But if they were all completely different species that all developed sentience on their own and experienced convergent evolution, then ok. But IIRC they're not ever described as that being the case, and we only have context clues (like the radically different biological processes of the Insectoids) to point in that direction.

Over the last two episodes this show suddenly shifted into a series with the weight and presence of mainline Star Trek, except with jokes, and I'm here for it. That was one of the best, most creative action sequences in the whole franchise. I loved the show already, but I hope this trend continues.

I'd like to watch an episode with a friend, to introduce him to the show. He hasn't seen much Trek, just two or three episodes of TOS an TNG that I showed him. But I think he could really enjoy this show.

So, any suggestion for a good introductory episode?

“Veritas,” no question. It’s self-contained, it’s hilarious, it shows pretty much every character at their best. I’d recommend that episode first, then jump to the beginning if he likes it.

Anyone notice how that member of the Doopler race looks like Jay Sherman from The Critic? Like, a lot like him. Richard Kind was a great voice for this eternally nervous dork, too.

Oh, great suggestion, I want to rewatch that one anyway. Thanks, I'll report back how he liked it.

Also, saw the latest episode, which was great snd eoic. Really fun to watch. This show keeps getting better.

Yeah, he enjoyed the episode a lot. No idea, if he will continue watching (he is pretty bad about remembering to start watching shows), but he definitely enjoyed it a lot. Great first episode, I think. I did explain a handful of things, like what a Bird of Prey is in this context, but that wouldn't have been necessary, I think. Also, we always talk about stuff while we watch, and he doesn't mind information and spoilers, just so you don't think I lessened his enjoyment, or anything.

Hooray! Glad to know my suggestion worked out.
