Star Trek: Lower Decks

That finale would be an okay place to leave things, I guess, though I want to see how Boimler does on the Titan. They established with the Vancouver that important ships can be an awful place to work, so I'm guessing he'll be back on the Cerritos in an episode or two.

Oh jeez, I hope not. I really hate when a new season resets the status quo.

I want this show to continue for a long, long, time. So they need to do something to bring the cast back together. And reverting to the status quo is a time honored Star Trek tradition!

End of season musing:

I wonder if they’re going to pull a reverse Tasha Yar with Shaxx - replace the big gruff alien at security with a lady (Mariner?)

Here’s an interview with McMahan that touches slightly on season two, which is on track for next year.

Biggest takeaway for me is that the Pakleds will be a recurring presence, which I approve of. They’re kind of the perfect villain for this show, in that they’re a small problem that got out of hand because everyone forgot about them once the important ship left.

Finally got to watch the last two episodes. Great finale to a very enjoyable season. And the second-to-last episode was one of the funniest ones that Trek had to offer. I laughed a lot.

Seeing the Pakleds being back was a big WTF-moment. Just great, and it totally fits with the deconstructive nature of this show. I don't remember how the TNG episode with them ended, but I do know that they never appeared again. Having them reappear is cool and really fitting.

In the TNG episode, they tricked them in reverse and got them to eventually surrender. But it was definitely not the last time we saw them. They are always in the background of the promenade in DS9 for example.

Thanks for the info. I don't notice background characters that much, so I'm not too surprised that I just missed them in DS9. Nice!

Lower Decks Season 2 just kicked off like an hour ago. And it's sooooooo good. I'm so happy this show is back. Eight seasons and a movie pls!!! The ending scene where Riker's distorted gluon face is just rippling with glee as he exclaims "I love my job!" while things go completely sideways had me rolling. Same with Dr T'Ana running off to find a boulder.
Cross post w/ the regular Star Trek thread. Lower Decks is back, baybeeeeee!

Very glad to have this show back. The premise of the premiere was pretty dopey, which the show ran with in a fun way. I loved when Ransom started spewing out rainbow god energy and Mariner and T’Ana waved and coughed at it like it was second-hand smoke or something. Everyone was just annoyed at this wrinkle in an already annoying assignment.

I am dead. I have deceased. And I definitely need to change my avatar in a few weeks so I give people a lil bit of time to catch up so I don't spoiler any current watchers but like. I am definitely changing my avatar now.

Edit: There are also so many tantalizing implications to canon for this episode, omg I'm such a mark for this show.

Also I of course appreciate the out-loud confirmation that Mariner is queer.
The show's creator/runner has gone on record saying that to him, every starfleet officer is probably "baseline bisexual" so that's how the show is being written. We've had bi-moments from basically every character so far aside from maybe Mariner's parents who are married and also don't get a lot of screen time.

The way they resolved the Boimler situation reminded me a lot of Crichton from Farscape getting split into two identical beings with separate storylines. And I like that it leaves open the possibility of checking in with other Boimler's adventures on the Titan.

Circling back on this, I love the complete bullshit way this was handled.
The show is so on-board with stupid sci fi nonsense and I love it. Like they accidentally birth a god and everyone is just kind of annoyed about it. And having unspoken etiquette around officers coming back to life with no explanation tickled me to no end.

Ooo, do you have a link for this?

Yeah, I'd buy it. Modern research already shows that most people operate on a spectrum of "who/what I am attracted to" and a separate scale of libido/sexual desire, so a ST-style utopia would have a few centuries to change old rules and adapt/create new ones to properly respect that understanding.

This was a good episode. A little dense with references. Richard Kind’s guest appearance was brilliant and he was used to his utmost in the episode. The entire model building plot line, I’ve never felt more seen or spoken to by a tv show. Also Captain Shelby!!!!!!! I’m such a mark.

Not an awesome episode this week, but pretty solid and still entertaining. Love Pakleds, also loved the Pakled playing Among Us on the ship, even getting himself spaced. Pretty gucci stuff. The Armus cameo was a little goofy but felt pretty rewarding because it's what he deserves.

I'm kind of torn on the Pakleds. Their appearance at the end of season 1 felt like a nice throwback, but continuing to focus on them is starting to feel like punching down at people with developmental disabilities. They feel less like a race that got their hands on advanced technology too early, like in TNG, and more like a race of absolute imbeciles, and while that's not in itself bad territory to plumb for jokes, their presentation and speech patterns feel too specific to the real world and it just becomes more obvious the more Lower Decks features them.

The rest of the episode was alright, I liked Boimler being briefly enamored by the superficial clique of redshirts. The scifi hijinks were fun, but uh

Huh.

This is more of an observation, Scorpion-Tendi was a fun time.

Also, is it weird that Shax is back but they still have the 'Darmok' alien around?

My favorite part of this season is how many dumb things they’re being allowed to write into canon. Ren Faire planet is so wonderfully stupid, and will now be added to the wiki as part of this universe. Now I’m wondering what that place must have been like during events like Discovery season three.

Watched a couple episodes of season two. Frakes still does a great Riker, I just wanted to say that. Not digging the new security officer. Do like how T'Ana shrugs off his brief Muppet-fication.

We were giggling all through “I, Excretus.” I hope every season has an episode that’s essentially a clip show, except all the clips are new.

Yeah, that was a really good time. Great TAS callback as usual as well, what with the alien that can split their body apart. And I really like how the show is building up Boimler as a character. When you think about what he did this episode, he basically beat the Kobayashi Maru test. Since he was given a scenario meant to be impossible to accomplish. And he did it at 100% to boot before intentionally sabotaging himself. That's really impressive! I'm starting to really believe he's command material, he just needs some more time in the oven to gain some more confidence.

Lower Decks never loses sight that, yes these are goofballs, but they're damn competent STARFLEET goofballs.
