Spoony's Stuff And Nonsense

I thought there was a general arting thread but I guess not? Anyway here's a place for me to throw random stuff.

Earlier this year I took up acrylic painting and I'm quite mediocre at it! When I'm not doing generic Bob Rossian landscapes or painting a picture of my parent's house for Mother's Day (hush) I occasionally try to go more video-gamey. Most of the time it doesn't work, but I did paint a pretty decent Crystal Tower (FFXIV) awhile back, which isn't the easiest thing to scan since my personal scanner is a garbage pile and I wasn't sneaking a canvas into work to use the one there, but here it is all the same:

crystaltower.jpg

I've gotten better at perspective and distance since, mostly I painted this because I was struck by the jagged, irregular shape of the tower and wanted to give it a shot.

Also I've been sketching lately and trying to work on my anatomy, but when I'm not doing that I'm drawing more cartoony versions of characters. Here's Terra's angry pose:

Terra.png

Flat colors, with (most of) the same colors on her sprite, though with a simplified design closer to her official/Dissidia outfit (the cape, mostly, but also polka-dot pants). I still suck at hands, so I cheated and hid them behind her hips.

Maybe I'll post more??? I've just been in an arty mood lately, I'm hit with those now and then. But this time I'd like to, I dunno, get good?

Here's a bit more Terra-related scribbles:
Terrasketch.png

This is a full body sketch I made, mostly to try and get her outfit down. I'm fairly happy with the pose, besides the fact that she looks kind of... stretched? Maybe the head is too small, I dunno.

Terrasketchposes.png

And here I have an assorted collection of poses, as I was trying to figure out a 'chibi' style. The angry pose in the bottom left is the same one I used to make the digital image above. I think I like the laughing pose the best.

I've been practicing drawing on my tablet some more and made a quick Supergirl sketch, which I did some line art and a quick coloring on:

Kara.png

I'm using Infinite Painter on my Galaxy tablet, it's a fairly good app in all honesty.

I'm happy with the overall pose with this one, though I'm not sold on the foreshortening on her leg. Also don't look too hard at the symbol, I uh, I didn't look up any references,

Got some new hardware, an XP Pen 12 Pro, it's a neat little drawing tablet that interfaces with my PC and serves as an elaborate touchscreen, and since my PC is quite a bit more powerful than my tablet I found it much better to draw on. I decided to christen it with a drawing of my Warrior of Light in FFXIV in her current MNK glamour:

grienborg.png

Flat colors with a quick watercolor background. I used Clip Studio Paint to create it, currently on the 30 day free trial, and it's a really nifty program that even has a bunch of 3D models you can import as a reference which I did for this. Is it a cheat? Possibly.

Nice stuff. It looks like you can really see the progress you made, from one post to the next. That Warrior of Light has so many details, and you don't do shadows the lazy way like I do, by just putting a semi-transparent layer of black over the relevant parts. The criss-cross lines create a really nice effect. Also, your hands look pretty good, every time I draw some, they look like claws. Hands and feet are hard, but yours look pretty well done.

Also, the whole head of the WoL looks really well done. The proportions are well executed, the expression is nicely done, and I like how the hair changes from black to purple.

Also, you draw a cute Terra.

A bit late, but I agree, the pose is pretty well done. And yes, the head is too small for the rest of the body, but even so, nicely done.

Thanks for the feedback Felix. I've spent some time learning more how Clip Studio Paint works and made another picture of Terra, this time with more effort put into the rendering:

Terra2.png

Maybe a bit overdone in some parts and not enough in others. And some of the colors in the background got a bit muddled when I messed with the levels. Still, I'm pretty happy with this one.

In celebration of Shantae's 20th anniversary I gave some fan art a go.

I always liked her vest from Pirate's Curse so I brought it back here.

Wow, that blew up when I posted it on the Twitters. It even got re-tweeted by Erin Bozon, nice!

Full disclosure on the pose, I did use ClipStudioPaint's 3D assets again, though at the very least I did spend the time to create a custom pose myself and orient it just right, and I only used it for drawing a quick skeleton in the sketch. Everything else was just using a few pieces of Shantae official art for reference.

More Terras! What can I say she's one of my favorite characters to draw. This time though I decided to try one of those '1 character in 10 styles' I saw around the art Youtubes, doing them in my sketchbook with alcohol markers (so I got some crummy campics) and I just finished the last one, so here's all 10!

Terra01OwlHouse.jpg
#1: Owl House. Probably least happy with this one, especially since it's the first. Out of all of them it probably looks the least immediately identifiable as its source style, I almost wanted to give this one a second go but I decided to push forward. Also as this is the first I have the colors and their numbers marked on the image, you'll only see that list of color blobs on this one.

Terra02BobsBurgers.jpg

#2: Bob's Burgers. Bit of a curveball with this one but Bob's Burgers, and related shows, have a distinct look about them and I feel like I captured it well enough here. It's simplified enough to match the style, and I think I got the look of the head and neck down. If I could re-do it I might make the difference between the sizes between the two eyes a bit more pronounced, as is common for Bob's Burgers characters, but I was fighting against my natural drawing impulse there.

Terra03DragonBall.jpg

#3: Dragon Ball. Pretty happy with this one overall, I think the shading went well, and the face looks very Toriyama. Terra is basically Bulma here, but I mean that works right?

Kinda hate those hands though, for real.

Terra04PaperMario.jpg

#4: Paper Mario. What fun is a multi-style art challenge without one real out-there choice? I put extra effort into the shading to resemble Paper Mario characters, with the really specific gradient and highlights on most of the pieces. I think it came through the best in the hair.

Terra05TimBurton.jpg

#5: Tim Burton. I tried to desaturate the colors in this one with some of my colorless blenders and faint greys, but she still came out a bit too saturated, I think. But overall I think I got the look down well, though the legs are a touch too thick, they should have been almost as spindly as the arms but I once again I was fighting against my natural impulses.

If I could have my time back I'd change the flower pattern on her top to more incorporate Burton's trademark swirl. Ah well.

Terra06PhantasyStar.jpg

#6: Phantasy Star IV. Really this looks more 'generic 80s/90s anime' than Phantasy Star specifically, but I did look up official PS4 character art for reference. A bit of Alys in the pose, a bit of Rika and Kyra in the face.

Terra07Simpsons.jpg

#7: The Simpsons. Really after Bob's Burgers this was the most obvious American animated sitcom to go with. I almost went with Family Guy as a style, but... eh.

Kinda effed the hands on this one again. Dang digits vex me once more! You'd think a four-fingered hand would be easier.

Terra08SailorMoon.jpg

#8: Sailor Moon. This might be the one I'm happiest with. Strong Sailor Jupiter vibes in the face and hair. I'm also pretty happy with the cape, especially the fringe.

Biggest thing marring it is that janky elbow.

Terra09Hilda.jpg

#9: Hilda (Netflix). Kind of on the other end of the detail spectrum from #8 (and especially #10). In a way this was a do-over for Owl House, at least in the sense of it being another western kid's show instead of an anime or animated sitcom. Did much better capturing the Hildaness here, simple limbs and details, and the hair matches several characters from the show.

Terra10JoJo.jpg

#10: JoJo. Last one, and I'm torn. I'm not as familiar with this series so I really had to look over several examples to get the look down, and I'm still not sure I quite got it. But I'm pretty happy with the linework and shading, whether it's authentic to Joeyjojo or not.

Whew, that's a lot of drarwring. Not sure of my favorite. 3? 8? 4 turned out better than I thought too. Hrm.

These are all cool! Hard to pick a fave, Paper Mario, Burton, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball are all fun.

Love them, even though I am a bit disappointed that there is no One Piece version, but I guess that would be very close to the (excellent) Dragon Ball one. Sailor Moon is another favourite (Sailor Jupiter came immediately to mind, even before I read your text below the picture). But they are all great.

As is the Shantae up there.

Belated thanks for the feedback. The multi-style exercise was fun to attempt. I recently did another Terra in marker, just me drawing her normally and not in a style.

Terra3.jpg

Overall I'm happy with it, but I wish I could have a do-over on her face. I'd totally redraw that if I were doing this one digitially but here it is what it is. I think the facial features are all just a little too high, makes her look like she has a much bigger chin than she should.

I also wanted to draw flames surrounding her raised hand, but I wasn't sure how to blend the fire and didn't want to ruin the image so I left it out.

I also did a sketch of my FFXIV character in her MNK outfit, same one as the digital piece above.
greinborg2.jpg

She is a Warrior of Light, so the total dorkus pose is very in character.

I also included the Monk job crystal, and the three stance symbols which are part of Monk rotation.

More FFXIV fanart, this time of the game's best gal pals:

The Coffee Biscuits should have dark chocolate, not raisins!

One of these days I need to bring my marker pad to an actual scanner instead of taking crummy smartphone pics.

Been bit by the digital art bug I guess. Want to try making a series of chibi pics of my FFXIV warrior of light.

Man that gun looks jank as heck. Just not used to drawing them, much less one as extra as that.

Thinking I'll do Warrior next.

Speaking of jank weapons here's Warrior!

Overall happy with the pose, but the weapon is a bit yikes, perspective is still rough for me to get right.

Fourth and probably final (for now) chibi pic of my FFXIV character, this time as a Dancer.

The weapon was a struggle, since it was the glowiest and flashiest weapon yet.

Done with FFXIV for now but I saw Karai's taunt in the new Dimension Shellshock trailer and just had to draw it.

Everyone and their dog has probably drawn Rosalina's reaction to Super Mario Bros Wonder by now, and this one is mine:

I'd play a game with Vampire Rosalina.
