What's Shenmue?
To support musicians who have had their livelihood affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bandcamp has been waiving their fee on the first Friday of every month. This is a great way to help your favourite indie bands and also get a bunch of great new music!

There are four more scheduled for this year:
  1. September 4
  2. October 2
  3. November 6
  4. December 4
(To see exactly when it begins in your timezone, check isitbandcampfriday.com)

What's Shenmue?
Today's the day!

For anyone who's looking for recommendations, here's some of the stuff I've picked up in the last few sales:
  1. Aidan Baker/Simon Goff/Thor Harris - The Bit: Post-rock of the most minimalist and atmospheric— no crescendos here. A welcome surprise; I had assumed their earlier collaboration, Noplace, was a one-off.
  2. The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers: The sophomore effort from New Zealand's premier power-pop band. Sort of makes me think of a poppier, sunnier version of the Pixies.
  3. Jerome Froese - Neptunes and Shiver Me Timbers: The son of Tangerine Dream leader Edgar Froese (and a himself a member of the band for a period), Jerome's "guitartronica" explorations make for some excellent and evocative progressive electronic that's rarely seen today.
  4. The Giving Spheres - Earth Leaps Up: Chamber-folk from two classically-trained musicians, a harpist and pianist. Gentle, delicate and charming.
  5. Beverly Glenn-Copeland: Glenn-Copeland's music can be broadly categorized as singer-songwriter and new-age, and it's fascinating to see what a black perspective brings to two largely white genres— a healthy influence from jazz, soul, funk and even Detroit techno. I linked to his page rather than a specific album, because he only has three albums and they're all good; be sure to give each a try, as they all sound distinct.
  6. Rustin Man - Clockdust: Paul Webb's follow-up to last year's (excellent) Drift Code seems to have flown under the radar (uh, probably because the world was dealing with something a bit more important in late March), but this is well-worth a look. Art rock with a jazzy, psychedelic flavour.
  7. Senyawa - Sujud: Indonesian duo that plays doom metal with a traditional Indonesian music flavour, including throat singing and handcrafted instruments. Unique and captivating.
  8. SPECIAL INTEREST - The Passion Of: Furious, urgent synth-punk out of New Orleans. Let's call it "NO wave".
  9. Ulver - Flowers of Evil: Ulver is back with another art-synth-pop album and I wouldn't mind if they keep doing this forever because it is just excellent. Where else are you going to find music that's catchy and dancey even as the lyrics are built around Biblical references, historical events, and high art?

I picked up Pinkshift's two singles as well as Amanda Lepre's video game remix album this morning. $10 was about all I could muster but I'll be looking into more stuff next month!

There's a new Ska Against Racism comp up as of today. Minimum one buck, all proceeds go to The Movement for Black Lives, The NAACP Legal Defense Fund, The Alpha Institute, The Conscious Kid, and Black Girls Code.

There's also a new Two Minutes to Late Night covers comp up. That one is ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL MIDNIGHT (EDT) TONIGHT. But that cover of "Be My Druidess" by Type O Negative from members of Darling, Windhand, Fucked & Bound, and Cave-In is worth the five bucks alone, to say nothing of the cover of "Earth AD" by the Misfits featuring Max goddamn Weinberg on drums.

I know we're all trapped in a hellvoid limbo for at least another day or two (at least, in the US), but one thing will happen for certain at the end of this week: Bandcamp Friday. Anyone have recommendations? Something you're looking to pick up?

I bought Pinkshift's latest EP and the Grandia II covers Stemage did forever ago. Not a lot of spare money this month, so I kept it light.

I posted this in the Mountain Goats thread too, but today's the last Bandcamp Friday! Hopefully not ever, but they haven't announced anymore yet.

The Mountain Goats livestreamed two full concerts back in October, today those are available as a pay-what-you-want album:

Also, it's not on Bandcamp, but today only They Might Be Giants' most recent album My Murdered Remains (plus an extra 16 bonus tracks!) is available for free, or for the price of your choosing:

What else should we be checking out today?

Good news, Bandcamp Fridays will continue:

Although vaccines are starting to roll out, it will likely be several months before live performance revenue starts to return. So we’re going to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2021, on February 5th, March 5th, April 2nd, and May 7th. As always, isitbandcampfriday.com has the details.

This is great news, obviously for the artists, but also for people like me who missed this month's due to the usual expenses of the holiday season.

Oh that's awesome! Brooklyn Rider are an extremely cool quartet. It looks like you accidentally posted the same Grammy link twice though, do you still have the Bandcamp link handy? I definitely want to hear the piece.

Bandcamp Fridays are BACK and begin TODAY!

I bought the Timespinner and A Short Hike soundtracks, along with a couple covers I dig.

Stuff I've liked on Bandcamp lately:
A Giant Dog's cover of Neon Bible - yes, the whole album. The punk-tinged energy on this one makes it a worthy match for Arcade Fire's classic, and I laughed when Tegan pointed out that the cover art is a goatse version of the original.
Door Girl by Shilpa Ray. It's pretty NYC-focused music, but I've never lived there and I like it fine anyway. Standout tracks are the one-two punch of the weary capitalist sigh of "Add Value Add Time" and the searing, scuzzy "EMT Police and the Fire Department."

Oh yeah! I recorded Shilpa Ray years ago for a project that never ended up getting completed, she's awesome. Good call.

Happy Bandcamp Friday! What are you picking up today?

They put up a neat article last month about the various Metroid albums available on Bandcamp, so I'mma try me some of those.

Gonna pick up Radyo Siwèl by Mélissa Laveaux, MetaL MetaL by Metá Metá, and maybe more stuff that other people recommend. (There was stuff I wanted to buy, but either the indie band inexplicably had no bandcamp presence at all, or they do have a presence but you can't buy their albums??)

I came across this banger earlier this week:

and fortuitously, all of The 8-Bit Big Band's albums (including the latest one with Snake Eater) are on Bandcamp, so that's where my money's going this time around.

Today I got Steamworld Dig 2's soundtrack, the official remix album of Shovel Knight, Mirah's album C'mon Miracle and the latest song from Pinkshift (who dropped their full EP and I HIGHLY recommend it):

Daaaaaamn, that is both a fantastic big band / vocal performance *and* the Metal SluGear pixel animations are freakin' amazing.

Oh hey, the art is by @SovanJedi, I remember seeing his awesome stuff around.
