I grabbed the new album from Greg Anderson (drone metal guitarist of Sunn O))) fame, releasing his solo work as The Lord), Devotional. I wasn't too impressed with his last one, but the addition of (wordless) vocals from Petra Haden really elevates the material… the juxtaposition and interplay between the chugging riffs and the high-flying vocals really works! It calls to mind, at least conceptually, some of the stuff Sunn was doing back on Monoliths.
Whoa, I've never heard anything quite like this. I'm not sure if I'd want to actually listen to it regularly, but it's unique as hell and Petra Haden makes everything she touches better. Very cool.

Okay, this Friday might be the last Bandcamp Friday of the foreseeable future -- there hasn't been any word about continuing into next year. Don't forget to pick up some music if you're feeling so inclined!

This (and the PolyglotDome Nomination Thread) reminded me that I should go buy some albums by Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen.

This Friday (March 3rd) is once again Bandcamp Friday. Anyone got new music recommendations?

Well I just learned the Wingspan soundtrack is on Bandcamp so that's neat. One of the track titles is misspelled though...

I did learn about it because they're going to release a vinyl record version for record store day this year which is amusing.

I feel a bit cliché saying "I'm going to buy some more game soundtracks", but I find it a lot harder to discover new music that I like via other means. Anyway, I've been replaying Bug Fables with my son and I think I might spring for the soundtrack. Some of the songs have with a bit of an early prog-rock vibe to them, and there are some decent uptempo battle tracks, too.

I also decided to get Banjo Guy Ollie's compilation of GB Castlevania covers, which is really good. Unsurprisingly, I'm a fan of his work!

I just find that game soundtracks are the best music to have going when I'm working. The majority of game soundtracks are composed to be listened to while you're doing other stuff so they're quite nice to listen to at my desk. Also they usually don't have vocals and I can't work while listening to a song that has a vocal track.

That's definitely a consideration for me, too! Most of my music listening happens while I'm at work, and while I can generally deal with vocals while I work on stuff, I find I can listen to instrumental music more times before it starts to feel repetitive.

Aaaaah the Bandcamp app FINALLY lets you make playlists! I opened it to download Wingspan and it popped up notifications saying so. I don't know why the fuck it took them so long to add playlists but this will improve the experience so much.

Bandcamp Friday is back again this week. I recently realized that I somehow have never owned MM...Food so I'm planning to fix that. Sorry I didn't get you sooner, Doom.

Bandcamp Friday suggestions from the world of traditional music!

My good friends from the band Genticorum have just release a new album, and it's really good! They play traditional music from Quebec with thoughtful arrangements, tons of groove, and they're all excellent people to boot.

If American old-time is more your speed, Owen Marshall released an album of string-heavy instrumental music that will be right up your alley.

For those who share my unhealthy fascination with the concertina, there's no better ambassador of the squeezy box than Cormac Begley, the ultimate concertina weirdo (affectionate). His album B has him playing tunes on an extra-low bass concertina, and his self-titled album has a full range of instruments from bass to piccolo. Bet you haven't heard anything like it!

I am extremely annoyed that the Bandcamp playlists aren't compatible with Android Auto. This is super dumb, I'm still unable to just listen to a bunch of my downloaded music.

Continuing March's move of surprise-remastering old EPs, the Mountain Goats today rereleased 2000's Isopanisad Radio Hour, which has some really fantastic songs. I'm hoping this means that next month (or July) we'll get Devil in the Shortwave, which was my favorite in this EP triptych.

This coming Monday, the 19th, Bandcamp is having a Juneteenth fundraiser. 100% of their share of sales will be donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Bandcamp Fridays will resume on August 4th and continue through the end of the year, no word on if they'll keep doing it in 2024.
