I missed the Prince of all Cosmos in my list. I don’t know what their moveset would be, but the reveal would be amazing.

I found a good visualization of the characters added to Ultimate so far:

48-C2839-C-7-AF9-4-ED4-B16-C-9-C2673-A91124.png

I’ve griped a bit about some of the choices, but overall the new roster has been excellent. There are tons of unlikely & out there picks, along with really popular, big name characters.

And here are a few more predictions for Challenger 11 I’ve seen:

Shantae
Octoling
Diablo
Amaterasu
Hollow Knight
2B
Crono
Vaati
Ryo Hazuki
Boxboy

Kazuya’s presentation is tomorrow morning. I’m rooting for Yoshimitsu and Solaire Mii costumes.

Picking up one of your opponents and using them to bludgeon the others does sound like it would be a ton of fun.

As much as I’d like Shantae, and for how much this game could use both more woman and POC representation, I can’t see her being the very last Smash DLC character. I could see the Knight or Hornet being Mii Sword fighter costumes, and I’d honestly be fine with that for either of them.

I’m still holding out hope for a character creator of some sort for the last DLC fighter slot.

Oh, for sure. I’m keeping a big list because I think it’s interesting how wide open things still seem at this point. People have their old favorites who they’ve been rooting for and big names who would be odd fits in the series. There’s only one spot left so most, if not all, of these are wrong. But, the first 10 challengers have been all over the place and have broken expectations. Since there’s no obvious character there are tons of wild guesses.

For no apparent reason I had the thought that if the final Smash Bros character is 3rd party, then it is probably owned by a company that negotiated to receive the final slot in order to be "extra special". I'm not sure if that helps figure out which company that might be. Who is the most prideful and big enough to succesfully demand such a thing from Nintendo?

Dante, Shantae, a copy of Skyrim, and Tales (not that Tails) are all Mii Fighter costumes with the latest update releasing tomorrow. So please update your expectations for the absolute final, no fooling, Sakurai just called this his life's work, we're done with this forever DLC character.

Hah, Dovahkiin made it in. Nintendo loves Skyrim, so it's not a huge surprise (though he avoided saying the series name for some reason). I didn't expect them as a new fighter at this point, so a Mii costume is the only way they would get in the game. Dante and Shantae were highly requested as well. Nintendo hasn't done an indie game with music since the first challenger pack, so it's nice that they brought that back for her. Lloyd was the only Smash 4 costume that hadn't come back in Ultimate, so that was an obvious one.

I am actually surprised that they didn't add any other Namco characters. It's happened before, but there are a ton of great characters who would have made good costumes. Oh well!

Kazuya looks pretty complicated, but not as bad as I had dreaded. You can probably just play them like a normal Smash character if you're not competing on a high level. There are a lot of extra moves on angles, while crouching or rising, and with command inputs, but the standard Smash Bros inputs all look like solid moves. Looking forward to trying them out. The stage looks like a lot of fun.

Cant honestly say I was expecting the titular Skyrim from the Video Games smash hit; Skyrim to show up.

I imagine a lot of people are very excited to play as the popular yelling guy, however. But whenever I played the game it was a big lizard guy.

So Sakurai is plainly playing fast and loose with established canon

The real news is that this is one of the 39 Tekken music tracks:

The titular Skyrim would just be the horizon. Like, the rim of the sky. That's what it means.

Anyway, a few people had predicted Dante and Lloyd, so I helpfully indicated that they've been ruled out.

What do the yellow cells represent? I was guessing Spirits, but I think Leon is a Spirit and he's in red.

lmao this batch of mii costumes feels like sakurai is saying "stop asking me for these characters." really makes me wonder who the last 4 mii fighters will be

My guesses for the last mii costumes are Doomguy/Master Chief (just one, not both), a Hyrule Warriors/BotW rep, a Dark Souls rep, and Phoenix Wright. (The actual character will be from Touhou, and I feel at least 30% confident about this.)

Red means non-fighter additions since launch, yellow means non-fighters present at launch. Some of them might be mislabeled.

... and dang, that's an insane number of Tekken moves crammed into a Smash character. It's always fun to watch Sakurai talking about how the heck they smushed systems together that really wouldn't work if you just tried to copy and paste from one game into the other.

So I read this elsewhere, but it does seem hold true, but for any series where the games are typically rated 'M' for Mature, if there's a costume added to Smash it's billed as "Smash Bros x Character" instead of "Smash Bros x Series/Game".

So far we've had:
-Smash Bros x Altiar (Assassins' Creed)
-Smash Bros x Travis (instead of No More Heroes)
-Smash Bros x Dante (instead of Devil May Cry)
-Smash Bros x Dovakiin (instead of SkyRim)
-Smash Bros x Vault Boy (instead of Fallout)

The only exception I could note is the Persona 4/5, which were both rated 'M' in the west, but had the lesser CERO 'B'/'C' ratings respectively in Japan. In the trailers they were billed as:
-Smash Bros x Persona 5
-Smash Bros x Persona 4

However, I should note that the other "x Character" games I mentioned above were all rated CERO 'D' (Mature Equivalent) or even CERO 'Z' (Adults Only Equivalent, but they actually use it instead of treating it as a ban).

I imagine this approach avoids the need to potentially re-evaluate the Smash's age rating when it claims to be crossing over with a typically 'M' or 'D'/'Z' rated franchise.

*edit*

So I was discussing this with someone, and they pointed out that Bayonetta was just billed as Bayonetta, and near as I can tell the games are rated closer to the M equivalent in Japan. Though she was added to the Wii U version, while all the current crossover's with the name changes are from Ultimate. Of course the game's names are also the character's names, so I'm not sure what the alternate naming could even possibly be. After a bit of digging I did find an article mentioning how the addition of Bayonetta almost forced them to have to revaluate the rating in Japan at the time. So maybe the naming change was put in place for Ultimate to avoid any potential issues.

That’s a good point. And, after I took out characters who already have Miis, Spirits, etc., from my list, most of the remainder are 3rd party characters. Here they are grouped by company:

Alis - Phantasy Star (Sega #4, Sakurai fav.)
Ryo Hazuki (Sega #4, Not on Nintendo)
Phoenix Wright (Capcom #4)
Amaterasu (Capcom #4)
Contra rep (Konami #4)
Sora (Square #4, Disney)
2B (Square #4)
Octopath Traveler rep (Square #4)
Crono (Square #4)
Lara Croft (Square #4, Eidos)
The Chosen Undead (Namco #3)
Klonoa (Namco #3)
Doom Slayer (Microsoft #3)
Master Chief (Microsoft #3, Not on Nintendo)
Crash Bandicoot (Activision Blizzard)
Diablo (Activision Blizzard)
Tracer (Activision Blizzard)
Prince of Persia (Broderbund, Ubisoft)
Scorpion (Midway)
Commander Shepard (EA)
Kratos (Sony, Not on Nintendo)
Ryu Hayabusa (Tecmo)
Adol Christin (Falcom)
Bub & Bob (Taito)
Opoona (Koei)
Sol Badguy (Arc System Works)
Touhou rep (Team Shanghai Alice)
Hollow Knight (Team Cherry)
Untitled Goose (Panic)

If I'm being cynical, I would say that Nintendo would be foolish to have anything but a Nintendo character as the final smasher. Just the concept of the "finale" to this roster holds so much weight at this point that it would be a missed opportunity to squander the hype of "we have been announcing brand new Smash Bros characters since June of 2018 (!), and now we are done" on another company's mascot. Particularly when you consider that many still point to Smash Bros as the main reason Western audiences ever engaged with Fire Emblem. Again, from a strictly cynical perspective, I would expect the finale to be, like, the announcement of a new Nintendo TRPG property, and, look, the hero is already in Smash Bros.

All that said, I am now hoping for something recursive: the final Smash contestant is Fighting Polygons from the popular Super Smash Bros. franchise. Metal N64 Mario would also be acceptable.

If Hell was to freeze over and Sony got a rep, personally I'd go for Ratchet (& Clank) over Kratos. Much like Crash Bandicoot the series has Japanese appeal, not to mention being a lot closer to Smash's CERO rating.
