No, I'd have to dig up where I had seen that and I don't remember where; I may well be wrong.

I was pretty underwhelmed by the reveal, but that's only because I have no knowledge or interest in Minecraft; my younger cousins on the otherhand (both 21) were very excited by the announcement. Steve's moveset looked pretty interesting and I enjoyed listening to the music in the video so I have no complaints about this inclusion.

You guys spent the majority of the last page in the Smash Bros. thread arguing about the ethics of supporting a Minecraft character, while the Dragon Quest thread has one short mention about Koichi Sugiyama, arguably a far worse person who still directly profits from the DQ series? Also, Dragon Quest content is in Smash!

Is it because Sugiyama doesn’t have candy room?

That’s something, then. I stopped playing Dragon Quest games because of that asshole. I really liked most of them, too!

And then there's that whole thing with the first new DLC addition (who's not Piranha Plant) being a guy who does heroic things like blackmailing his teacher into being his personal maid. =/

Minecraft's creator is definitely problematic but at least he no longer has anything to do with the game. And at least this DLC addition of interchangeable mute protagonists acknowledges that women exist.

Steve mate yes. There he is.

Playing Minecraft with my nephews was probably the happiest I've ever been

i just think it'd be more fun to add character from lesser known works rather than a non-characterized pc from the most popular series out there

I agree: Mario has no place in this game

Fun for who?

Like, I was excited about Banjo Kazooie, but a lot of people didn’t care at all. Meanwhile, Terry was huge for people in South America, Japan went wild for Hero, and kids are extremely excited for Steve & Company. Nintendo is doing a great job of appealing to a wide variety of fans with these picks.

Yep, that's where I am. Anything that makes the Smash player base less insular (and, honestly, less problematic) by inviting as wide a variety of fans as possible can only be a good thing.

What Cloud and Joker and Hero did for previously uninterested RPG fans, Steve does for younger players who want to share the fun.

Fyonn

did their best!
Seeing as Notch no longer has anything to do with Minecraft - they even took him out of the credits - Steve is nothing but a positive. Minecraft redefined video games in a huge way that we're still reckoning with to this day. Survival and crafting mechanics are the order of the day in tons of massively popular titles, and I'd say Minecraft had as much to do with that as, say, Doom had to do with the rise of the FPS.

also it's deeply funny that smash ultimate will have awful programmer art in it for the rest of time

This. Whatever your opinions on Minecraft, the series is huge with the younger crowd and it having representation in Smash is sure to bring in a ton of new players for the series.

And this is why we'll most likely see Fortnite Battle Royaler announced in the next four months or so.

did cloud and joker actually get rpg players to buy smash? I'm doubtful of individual dlc characters pushing the needle on an already extremely successful franchise, especially with the difference in actual game. It's great getting players interested in new games, which is why i think taking a series that doesn't need any help selling copies and using that as the curation tool is generally better

e: and obviously by "fun for who" i mean me. I don't really care what is going to sell better for nintendo or appeal to "the most people". why would i?

It’d probably get people who wouldn’t buy the DLC otherwise, but like Minecraft, to continue spending money on the game.

Or else it makes people happy so they continue playing it too, and encourage even more stuff still.

Jokers inclusion still baffles me

I mean, it's all anecdotal data, but at least two other friends of mine were, "Eeeeh, maybe," on Smash but went wild over the Joker announcement. I was interested in Smash 4 due to Cloud and Ryu but didn't have a WiiU and my interest wasn't great enough to get it on 3DS. Joker not only sold me on Ultimate, but also got me to purchase a Switch to coincide with the Fighters Pass itself.

I don't know if it's possible to get actual, quantifiable metrics on this; I don't know if there's a way to look up sales charts for the game and the console in relation to the announcements and releases. But while Smash HAS a reasonably large player base, only a relatively small fraction of it plays it competitively enough for tournaments and streams. Everyone else is drawn to it because of specific interest in one or two characters, and then they enjoy the rest of what the game offers.

I'm not a big fan of Minecraft and Notch is a colossal piece of shit, but I was pretty impressed with what was show in the trailer. Looks charming, at least. An infinitely more interesting addition than Byleth (who came from a game that I loved).

I’ve warmed to Byleth. They’re much more fun and unique than most FE characters. Their only issue was an awful trailer following a lot of buildup.

By the way, I saw this on Reddit yesterday:

That’s a great collection of series, and Minecraft isn’t even the weirdest. Plus there’s stuff from Shovel Knight, Monster Hunter, Undertale, etc. Rather than looking at characters, what is the #1 franchise you’d want added?

it’s easily Resident Evil for me.

If puzzle game characters can get in, I see no reason for Katamari Damacy to be left out.

If a Resident Evil rep got in Smash, I would really want one of the monsters. Like, I'm sure they could lump a bunch of main protagonists into one character slot, but I'd prefer the Nemesis or Mr. X or a random Hunter or Licker over someone like Chris or Leon.

I know these fighting game additions tend to be protagonist-centric, but that's just how I feel about Resident Evil. The bio hazards would be more interesting to me.

I figured Crash had a good shot for this spot as the new game's coming out and it'd be nice if we could play with Crash and the boys
