Sizzler is Dead, Long Live Sizzler

When I was a wee lad, going to Sizzler was the big deal family dinner thing. I thought it was the fanciest. Oh, innocent Flawgic... what a purer world you live in back then.

I only remember it from a mention in Saved By The Bell.

Wee Zef associated it with wealth because the family going there was supposed to be very well off.

Envisioning child Flawgic with his Louisville Slugger bat hitting a home run and thinking "YES! Now they HAVE To take me to Sizzler!"

Is Sizzler a midwest thing?

We definitely had them on the east coast, but not in the Jersey/Philly area where I'm from. I remember going to one when I lived in Delaware and I believe I've been to one in Maryland too.

I’m mainly familiar with The Sizzler from Weird Als opus; Albuquerque.

And, to a lesser extent, the Sizzler & Sizzler sketches on Kids in the Hall, which I do not feel is representative of the fine dining experience you can only get at Sizzler

It is sort of fascinating to me that this was like the sound of an entire era of corporate america that was specifically intended for internal use. I'm half-convinced the people who wrote and performed that tune also did this one for Arizona's Valley National Bank, which (much as how this was apparently shown to new employees, based on the video description?) was given to that company's workers on a tape distributed as a christmas gift.

This is one of those places that my In Laws loved to take the whole (huge) family out to, but I hadn't ever experienced before marrying into their rituals. Given that the other similar choices nearby were either Golden Corral, or Utah's own 'Chuck-a-Rama' it was perfectly adequate.

I wonder if my Father In Law will be sad to hear this.

More like getting all Os on my report card or doing something in Church. I didn't really do sports until High School. And at that point innocent Flawgic was long gone. As was the Sizzler my family used to go to as well as any desire from any of us to go there.

Oh, so, basically Fuddrucker's then (an also dead 'American' food joint that also is one of three restaurants to give me food poisoning; the others being Hardees and Arby's).

The one in town is called "Western Sizzler", but it's clearly the same thing, all the way down. I wonder if it's also implicated.

Looks like other people have responded to them

It looks like they were all over the place in the past but started disappearing. They were in Illinois at some point but I don't ever remember eating at one.

I don't have memories like that for Sizzler but I do have them for other similar restaurants. Now if you'll excuse me I have some bittersweet nostalgia to have sad and wistful feelings about.

I'm not sure what I like more:

  • The grizzled sea captain
  • No-Context Louisville Slugger Girl
  • The impressive oscillations between eroticism and nationalism.
  • The couple who's having an affair, realizes the camera's catching it, and then says "Fuck it, let's tell the world we make out at a Sizzler."
  • Overuse of low frame rate and soft focus
  • The sultry whisper of the word "Sizzler" over the ending logo.
So beautiful.

Just chiming in to say I’m from the midwest and I don’t recall ever seeing a Sizzler in person. Now if you excuse me, I’m off to Culver’s to get a butter burger and Dr. Pepper.

I have seen plenty of Sizzlers in Arizona and Southern California.

When I was a wee one it was seen as a fancy place by my family, but the last decade I knew it as "the place where old people eat."

Yeah, back in NC, I don't remember any "Sizzlers," but we had everything from Western Sizzlin' to Western Steer to Quincy's and Golden Corral. I was under the impression they're largely the same thing (though the latter has gotten a LOT bigger over the years, I think? Bigger than the rest here, anyway).

Don't believe that Sizzler is going bankrupt. Instead, believe that this is merely step one of the unthinkable Epsilon Protocol.

It's Western Sizzlin', isn't it? The first time I saw one of these was in Searcy. It had recently burned down. I thought this was darkly hilarious and I was sure to tell everyone I knew about it.

Ryan's is another one of these "just serve everything" buffet kinda places that probably had a grand reputation at some point, but nowadays I associate them with watery vegetables and old people.

As a wee lad I thought Sizzler invented 'Surf n Turf.' Like this was my idea of a Fancy Steak House. BONUS - also had an all you can eat buffet!
