Shin Megami Tensei: New Reincarnation of the Thread (Actually Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series)

SMT3 HD update:
In addition to Merciful difficult (easy mode) being released as free DLC and Dante being released as paid DLC, they will also be selling Experience and Money grinding DLC that work similar to the grinding DLC from SMT4/4a: You get a special map where you run around and fight mitama, they'll sometimes drop items that you can use (experience) or sell (for macca).

There's also BGM DLC that changes the world map music and the world map battle music to songs from SMT1, SMT2, SMT4, and SMT4A.

They're adding in a Suspend Save so you can save anywhere.

Money is my #1 concern in Megatens because I always insist on fusing everything, buying things back, and fusing everything again. So, honestly, the Money Mitama DLC saved me so much time time in SMT IV I'll definitely get it here too.

(It'd be amusing if the special map were a burning version of Mikado and had the SMTIV BGM to match.)

I'll probably get the music DLC for kicks, but Large Map and Large Map: Last Area are pretty damn awesome in their own right so I don't think I'll be switching to the alternate themes very often.

I assume Suspend Save will work the same way as it does in Deeply Strange Journey.

My major confusion stems from the Dante From The Devil May Cry Series DLC--if you get it, will you get events for both Raidou and Dante? Because from my understanding of the Chronicles version, their appearances would overlap with each other. Or will the latter replace the former for the complete PS2 experience?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see from the article that if you get the Featuring DLC From The Devil May Cry Series, you have to manually select the specific New Game "Maniacs" option to replace Raidou scenes with Dante scenes. So yeah, distinct PS2 experience.

Great to know on all fronts, especially since I have no feelings whatsoever towards Raidou...

Not hearing great things about this remaster now that it's out in Japan. Apparently there are technical issues, with longer load times making it even more tedious to reroll for skills, and--oh yeah--you still have to reroll for skills since the fusion mechanics are completely unchanged from the original release. I was really excited for this game to be rereleased, since I love it and I don't want it to die with the PS2, but apart from the voice acting it seems like they didn't invest much in terms of making this a quality release.

Aw, man, I was really hoping for at least some QoL improvements from later games, especially in fusion mechanics :/ I guess refactoring the logic behind those components was deemed too cumbersome/complex a task for the (presumably) limited investment.

I still would have bought it even if they didn't change/fix some dated mechanics, but technical problems and ESPECIALLY longer load times puts me on the fence for this, sadly...

Sad that they didn't nail this.

I guess I will continue offering prayers to extend the life of my aging fat PS3.

Well, I mean, if the primary issue IS only with loading times making fusion more tedious, the remaster still has plenty of improvements in the form of Raidou, native HD graphics, and voice-acting. For me, personally, the Switch version adds portability (I've long maintained that "portable Nocturne" would be the end of me) and the PS4 version adds better screen/video-capture, which I'm a huge fan of. So while I'm disappointed that some expectations weren't met, I'm still hyped for the ones that were.

Also I'm hoping that a PS4 or PS5 install would help a bit with the load times.

We live in the age of patches though so if we're lucky maybe some of this stuff will be fixed by the time we get the game.

Yeah, I have hopes that at least the load times will be fixed on Switch... I want this portably, too, so I don't really care how it runs on PS5 or 4 or whatever. If I'm playing this on a TV 100% of the time, I may as well just emulate it.

Well I know they made this port in Unity and there's definitely been examples of Unity games that initially had bad loading times but eventually got patched later. So I guess my point is, if all versions of the game have bad loading times then it's not a hardware problem, it's software which can be fixed (provided the developers have the incentive to do so).

I'll give 'em some of the other stuff, but things are often tied to framerate that can have consequences on gameplay and some things are more easily expanded from 4:3 to 16:9 than others.

Seeing the examples of what's wrong with the port in that thread if anything made me think it looks fine.

Yeah, as someone with a copy of the game and a PS2 slim, small hitches in loads between menus and a small downgrade in musical quality aren't dealbreakers by a long shot and the mixed aspect ratio does sting a bit but I can deal. I wish it were better, sure, but I think it's worth the portability and continued investment in more HD ports.

Individually, I can deal with each little flaw. But everything together is the frog being thrown into boiling water--and the issues with the music are the most disappointing, especially since they touted a remastered OST as well and Nocturne's music is a MAJOR aspect of its appeal to me. I understand why certain SFX in the cutscenes may be responsible for the shifts in aspect ratio, but that Atlus wouldn't put the effort to fix those issues is what irks me. They did not let that slide with Persona 4 Golden!

The thread proposes that we still "have" to buy it, but, see, if DDS and Raidou get similar treatments, I don't see why I should encourage Atlus to "remaster" them this way too.

The only thing here that I’m upset about is the music. Ugh.

I’m a shill and will probably still get it if I can, cheap. Portable SMTIII is too stronk a pull.

I guess for me none of it really bothers me at all, or at least I'd want a point of comparison to the original.

The problem with the music is that it still sounds like it did on the PS2. Okay?

The menu isn't instantaneous, but I'm not sure this is any slower than it was to begin with. I'd need to see a side by side, but I didn't see it as out of the ordinary for a console JRPG menu, for better or for worse.

30fps is fine with me. Was the PS2 game better than this? Not sure.

Don't care that the aspect ratio changes in cutscenes, whatever, a fairly regular quirk of remasters.

If I get this port, I'm not going to buy the Dante DLC because I like Raidoh more.

I didn't expect or want an overhaul and rebalancing of skill inheritance to allow for manual selection. I think the skill system in the PS2 game was good.

And most of all, I don't have to buy this game and probably won't unless it's on sale for an extremely low price. I joked earlier, but . . . playing the Raidoh Maniacs version on a fat PS3 is an option for me, and it's a very good option! And generally I'm not into "voting with my wallet" as a concept. I buy games if I want to play them, not to support theoretical future games.

I just don't agree with anything in that thread.

I hate to admit it, but yeah, probably me too. Put it up for discount and I'll grab it...

It really does seem like a lot of people expected a remake and got a port. If you're fine with a port it's a port, if you wanted major improvements your expectations are betrayed. I generally err on the side of "make a complete teardown remake or make something that plays like it always did" so this is fine for me.

Watching the vids, those minor delays I saw weren’t completely out of character for the original game on a real PS2. Even if it was ripped to HDD.

Fyonn

did their best!
The thing that really kills this for me is that I can take my PS2 copy of Nocturne and run it on my PC via an emulator for a better experience in every way than the HD version. I was really hoping for at least updated skill inheritance mechanics, which was a long shot. The load times are kind of a killer, too, Nocturne is a game full of exceptionally large, labyrinthian maps, and that's gonna add up between exploration, battles, and OXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

yeah, i haven't touched my copies of any of the ps2 games in a while but i remember the early ones definitely feeling very responsive, and looking up a couple speedrun videos of people rerolling makes the difference between the two look pretty obvious to me. though honestly with atlus' track record of making updated versions less appealing in general imo, i guess i almost feel like a shinier port with a bit worse qol is maybe above the average

though i'm still thinking i should just rig up an emulator setup when i feel like checking it out again
