Digging through old stuff on FF6 for that other thread reminded me.

When you fight Ultros for the first time on the Lethe River, Ultros ducks back underwater to escape. Sabin leaps into the water after him, because Sabin is hotheaded and kind of an idiot. This separates Sabin from the remaining party of Edgar, Terra, and Banon... and the raft.

Sabin floats down the Lethe until the start of his own scenario. During this time, he drowns. Sabin is dead. Sabin is a ghost, but since he's kind of an idiot, he doesn't realize it. He meets Shadow, who may or may not also be dead. He meets Cyan, who totally died along with the rest of Doma when Kefka poisoned everyone. No other reason is given for Cyan's survival, and presumably he drinks water like everyone else. (Even moss drinks wate-- wait, wrong game.)

The two, perhaps three, wandering spirits then go to the Phantom Forest and board the Phantom Train, as ghosts are supposed to do. Then, because Sabin is a bit of an idiot, he suplexes the Phantom Train, making himself such a nuisance that the train shoves him off and tells him he and his friends get to live, just don't come back. Sabin returns to life, and brings Cyan and perhaps Shadow with him, because he is simply too stupid to die.

It is at this point that Sabin goes "Well, I'm functionally immortal, now that the psychopomp who ferries the souls of the dead to the afterlife refuses to have anything to do with me. I could do the most reckless things imaginable -- continue to do the most reckless things imaginable, I suppose -- and suffer no consequences for it. The world is my oyster." At least, he could, if he weren't an idiot. What Sabin actually goes is "WOOOOOOO" as he leaps headfirst over a waterfall.

This also fits with the time a bit later when he decides it's a good idea to personally hold up a building that's currently on fire.

The discussion in the Metroid Dread thread started me thinking on another possible interpretation of the Metroid story: The "Space Pirates" are actually a rebel army fighting against the tyrannical Space Federation. Mother Brain was a horrible genetic experiment by Federation scientists, but she managed to break free and began leading the Space Pirates in order to defeat her creators. Samus will eventually find this out, and become the new Mother Brain, leading the Space Pirates and their Metroid allies against the enemy that wanted to wipe them both out.

I'm not too well-versed in Touhou lore to make the most compelling case for this argument, but something tells me that Blind the Thief from Zelda 3 is from Gensokyo.

And Ridley killed and proceeded to eat Samus Aran's parents because they were super bad about sorting their recycling.

I imagine some kind of twist where it turns out that Ridley is also a bio-weapon created by the Federation, sent to infiltrate the Space Pirates and doing a bunch of false-flag operations. So the Federation were responsible for the death of Samus' parents all along. But that might be a bit too complex for your typical Metroid game, I fear it would turn into a bunch of Metal Gear-esque cutcenes.

Captain Picard never really liked Worf, and lowkey never invited him to join his crew on the Enterprise-E because of it.

Consider: the memey complication videos of Picard constantly shooting Worf down.

Now consider a year after the Enterpise-D crashed, Worf is considering leaving Starfleet because he lost his home on the D, but also seems completely unaware of plans to make a new Enterprise.

Almost exactly a year later, during First Contact, Geordi states that the Enterprise-E has been in shakedown for over a year.

Meaning somehow Picard is taking command and putting together a crew for a brand new Enterprise and his former tactical officer is just mysteriously left in the cold about it.

Then after DS9 and the Dominion War is over, and Worf leaves DS9, there's no reason he can't go back to the Enterprise to stay. Especially when there's a brand new opening for First Officer, but he doesn't stick around then either.

This is what happens when you catch carcinization halfway through the process.

Artanis in Starcraft 2 is trans. Artanis used to be this skinny little ultra-smooth-skinned twink, and now he's all big and beefy and veiny with the same lumpy bumpy skin every other Protoss we'd ever seen has. And you could go "oh, well that's because he's older now," but... no he's 4 years older and protoss live for thousands and thousands of years. This woman here? Several millenia older than Artanis, not one wrinkle. The same is true for every other Protoss woman you get to see, and they've all got that same scrawny build Artanis used to have. Meanwhile every dude you see is super jacked and lumpy, even the frail old man. So the only sensible conclusion is last time we saw him he'd only just started in on HRT recently, hadn't really had time to change his skin texture or build, and now a few years later, yeah dang, amazing before and after.

Sgt. Hammer of course is also trans, which is why she has the exact same dialog and inflection as any other siege tank operator.

The space pirates you run into at the start of Super Metroid are just a team of scrawny repair technicians. They were only sent to old Tourian to answer some silly repair ticket related to a power surge caused by you messing around in old Brinstar. They weren't trained or armored for combat, which is why they only die in one shot.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the events of Infinity War, snapping your fingers becomes a highly offensive gesture. Snapping your fingers at someone else is considered to be pretty close to a threat of violence.

In Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, there's a teen girl, Anne, who shows up for a few adventures then disappears and isn't terribly relevant to the plot. In Diamond Is Unbreakable, there is implied bootstrap paradox time fuckery that's never actually addressed. Also Really Old Jospeph adopts an invisible baby. Her name is also a play on "Jojo", implying she could be one down the line, albeit without any actual blood tie). I think said baby and Anne are the same, she got time displaced in a much bigger Crisis on Infinite Jojo's style adventure who got waylaid and amnesiac, then finally made her way back to a story where she actually does have importance.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the events of Infinity War, snapping your fingers becomes a highly offensive gesture. Snapping your fingers at someone else is considered to be pretty close to a threat of violence.

Thus, comic book fans in the MCU were dismayed when a popular publisher banned their legacy character, Snapper Carr.

The thing about that is though, is that while Thanos offed half the planet with a snap, Tony also brought everyone back with one as his dying act as well. If snapping was going to be associated in the public mind with added meaning and value, I'd think that it would be most associated with Iron Man's heroism and self-sacrifice more than anything else. As it just fits with the general optimistic message of cape-shit, and the deification of Tony Stark post-blip, and how post-Endgame shows the world readjusting the events of Infinity War/Endgame (going from calling the event the 'snap' to the 'blip' like how WWII got The Great War renamed and recontextualized). I could see an MCU world where people snapped their fingers in unison like a beatnik club in moments of solemn reflection or honor, like during a funeral or a ceremony or events like Memorial Day, etc. How cool would that be? Just replacing applause with snapping fingers for solemn yet life affirming moments.

In Dragonheart, all dragons sounded like Sean Connery. That's why Bowen didn't recognize Draco's voice coming from the cave when meeting him for the second time.

In the X-Files, Everyone in the government is just astonishingly bad at managing a sinister alien conspiracy, and everyone in America just pretends not to know about it so that they feel better about themselves. This is why everyone from random stoner teens to diner wait-staff knows all about where to go to find people possessed by werewolf ghosts or made of UFOs or whatever, and also the government has a special division dedicated to solving mysteries they don’t want solved.

Mulder and Scully, being government agents, are themselves completely clueless about all of this.

Ridley from Metroid isn’t one of a kind, but there are very few of them among the Space Pirate ranks; this is why the Pirates have to bend over backwards to bring him back when he’s killed, but there always seems to be one that isn’t a Frankenstein or else recovers surprisingly quickly from otherwise fatal injuries.

The chief philosophy of The Legend of Zelda is that you have to get all the widgets; bad guys HATE people collecting widgets on them
    [12:13 PM]
But all good philosophies have opposing viewpoints and that’s why in Zelda 2 you start with all the Widgets and you have to get rid of all of them
    [12:14 PM]
…which is why Links shadow is the final boss because now you have no Widgets left so you must be evil.
    [12:14 PM]
    …did I just stumble ass-backwards into a working canon?
