September 2026 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here are lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Withering Realms by Moonless Formless is the follow-up to Withering Rooms. The previous work was a Souls-tinged sidescrolling horror RPG, and is one of my favourite games; an absolute modern classic. The successor brings in the third dimension to the equation with set camera angles, and that's really all I need to know about it to have full confidence. It will release in early access but is "fully playable from start to finish" with balance adjustments and additional features to be implemented at a later date.

Isle of Reveries is GBC Zelda-patterned adventure. I know for some games of this ilk have had the air sucked out of the room by Mina the Hollower this year, but monopolies aren't great and personally my issues with that game have me looking for contrasting works. A friend described this having a "sorrowful tone" which is already doing much to differentiate.

Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil makes available and compatible with modern systems the sixth entry in the series, the first of the Windows run, and codifying work that still influences much what transpires within the series and outside of it. Reprogramming the entire thing has given opportunity to include higher-resolution art, newly arranged music, and the first official English localization vertical STG Touhou has had. Thread here.

Magical Blush is not a game I've really followed but the stylistic flourishes in it seem strong and the magical girl combat looks interesting and fulfilling of a particular fantasy there aren't too many games about.

Silent Hill: Townfall is the last-arriving project from the big blowout that resurrected the series a few years ago. Like others from that lot, it's as different from them as any of the others, this time taking cues from the Alien: Isolation niche of horror given a number of the team are alumni of that game. As ever with this series, you'll probably need to delve in deep to say anything more.

I'll be picking up Marvel's Wolverine. I haven't been a comic enjoyer in 30 years or so but Wolverine was always a favorite when I was a kid, and I know my teenager will want to play it anyway. I'll probably bite on Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter as well. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first one (after I muted the voice acting).

Blood of Dawnwalker has some interesting things going for it but there's also the Witcher DNA, and I"ve never cared for the Witcher. Maybe on a deep sale. Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo was lovely but I've never been a fan of the franchise. Another one to pick up on a sale in the future.

I kinda love the thing Orbitals seems to be but, sadly, the required co-op will likely forever keep me away.

The stuff they're advertising about tactical RPG Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave makes it look like one hell of a game. The series' traditional tactical RPG gameplay is extended with new elements like elephantry and laser guns. It looks like it's going to have one of the larger casts in the series. The distinctive feature seems to be granular time management on a world map full of side activities, which places soft limits on what you can see and do and who you can recruit; but you have a lot of flexibility since you can jump freely between alternate timelines associated with each of four different main characters, each trying to win a boon in a team combat tournament. Perhaps the most exciting game of the year for me.

I admire the pluck of releasing de-gachafied RPG Another Eden Begins like a day or two before such a huge release. Squaresoft veteran Masato Kato made a comparatively generous and narratively-driven mobile RPG filled with allusions to his prior work and others'. Mobile game conversions that strip out the predatory monetization are a trend I'm keen to observe.

I'm always learning about indie releases shortly before they come out. At the moment, I'm curious about Serious Sam: Shatterverse, which technically releases today (August 31). There have been other roguelite co-op FPS games that haven't clicked with me, but this spinoff appears to be drawing heavily on the really well-designed menagerie of traditional enemies from the Serious Sam games. You face swarms of monsters with simple behaviors that are individually easy to counter, so the challenge is in combining the responses to all of the threats and prioritizing targets, aided by really informative audio design (I remember back in the old Serious Sams, if I played with headphones I was able to turn and take out fresh enemy spawns aiming by sound alone). I'll wait and see if the reviews are good. EDIT: Turns out the reviews are bad, so I'm gonna skip it!

Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave is absolutely the primary focus, this isn’t up for debate

Isle of Reverie is just further proof that this is a great year for GBC based Critter Zelda’s

I’ve never actually played any of the LEGO Franchise games to any meaningful degree, but LEGO Batman 3 has a lot of my attention by merit of it being a Silly Arkham game.

I liked Insomniac's Spider-Man games, so I'm looking forward to Wolverine.

I'm also very excited for Control Resonant at the end of the month. It's been a long time coming and everything I've seen so far has looked pretty wild.

The release date for Free Stars: Children of Infinity (the long-awaited one true sequel to Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters aka Star Control II) is still unknown. However, a demo of its combat system will be released on September 8.

In a surprise release, Double Fine's recent game Keeper is newly available on Playstation today. I was hoping I'd get to play this one day, and now extra happy to support them now that they're independent again.
