So, in that second image, the image of the naval lieutenant is painted on the sails, but the painting is … holding an actual giant gun?
 
I think it's supposed to be a circuit board with about a zillion connectors, which of course just raises more questions.

The thing he's sitting on looks like a bunch of pins, yes, but I'm talking about the two things on either side of him.

I was thinking those were just breakouts that redirect the pins out either side, though now that I'm looking again the ones on the left don't actually line up with the pins underneath at all, so... yeah who knows.
