Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven

I went with Emperor Fritz the Pro Wrestler because I wanted to go ahead and get my Punch Skills Up (and also: Tech Damage + 10%). Cannot stress enough how much I love being able to form a party at the tavern instead of running around picking characters up, especially because you can see their class abilities right there. All of the Mages seem to have Abilities that are like, oh that's gonna go so hard on other characters when I finally unlock that mechanic.

Remember to check Gerard's portrait in one of the castle bedrooms to get that All Stats + 1 ability.

Love how big of a push the termites are getting in the Memories of the Seven Heroes flashbacks.

I am enjoying that quite a bit., and it's a part where I think voice acting does kind of elevate the experience. Getting so many characters together talking dramatically about, fucking, termites lends it some absurdist gravitas. New players will definitely be like "termites?? seriously??" Meanwhile I can sit here going "ah yes, those fucking termites."

Beaver.

I can't wait to have a thief called Beaver in my party.

Not even because of any euphemism, that's just a hilarious animal to name a character after.
My first timeskip succession resulted in the enthroning of Emperor Beaver, so this game is incredible.
This is what happened to me when I first played the modern port, and that was when I knew this game was something special.

I am so pleased.

Third Gen was Corsair, and brother was absolutely melting enemies with martial arts on account of his high Strength and Agility. Like Ki Blast was regularly hitting two or three times as hard as what the other folks were putting out.

Fourth Gen is a Boy Crusader, it's also the first gen I'm doing without a Heavy Infantry Auto Parry Tank, so we'll see how it goes. I think this generation is gonna be mostly getting things set up for the Mermaid Quest. The Pirate Rebellion has unfortunately already started so I have to deal with that first to get my finances in order. I might try to finish the Blacksmith quest if I can, which, of all the quests in this particular game, is probably the funniest wrt the generational mechanics.

Gosh, I've only just barely started my 2nd Gen so far. I've found that Classic difficulty has some pretty high HP enemies, which hasn't been my favorite thing ever, but it also feels like there might be more gameplay tricks to take advantage of here to deal better damage output; I was certainly impressed with my Martial Artist Emperor having his class trait active (which by the way, might be mistranslated, because the Battle UI kept showing it only activated on Weak hits).

I ran into 1 slightly annoying thing: far as I can tell, the game didn't give me a Formation in my 1st Gen, despite being a Vagabond class. I have to wonder if it's because the formation NPC hadn't technically been initialized yet at the start of Gen 1... but anyway you can still savescum the Emperor Abdication to unlock those slightly faster (you can only abdicate once per gen).

I was wrong about this because I forgot Vagabond gives you Free For All 2 and I thought it was something else. No problem!

Martial Artist emperor gen was feeling beefy and they sure needed that muscle to withstand Dantarg down in his cave. It was a long generation anyway, so they might've gotten carried away powering themselves up, but now I'm testing out the old faithful Mu Rampart formation thanks to the Saigo Clansman contributions, which in the original carried me through all the rest of the game. It seems promising here too one quest later, but who knows how it'll perform when something truly nasty turns up again. Some strategies that until now have been fun and reliable (utilizing stuns, mainly) are naturally off the table thanks to its always-go-last property.

I gotta say, this remake does deserve credit for blowing up the scope of these environments; the Steppe feels fairly massive relative to what it was in the original, and likewise the Landship looks way more massive and imposing.

I've generally liked the 7 Heroes Flashbacks, the first one with Orieve sort of stands head and shoulders above the rest, but they've still mostly been good... except for the one where Rocbouquet is introduced. I don't like the characterization they went with for her, instead of her feeling like an equal within the group she comes across as needy tagalong little sister.

I do wonder if the order of the 7 Heroes Flashbacks could be used to chart a quote-unquote intended course through the game.

Anyway, managed to finish the Mermaid Quest with my Boy Crusader team, and also unlocked Ability Mastery, so instead of playing around with the four new classes I just unlocked (Nereid, Hunter, Mole, and Dancer) this generation, I've using some of the older classes so I can get their Abilities. I might actually switch up parties this generation, and hopefully that won't knee cap me too bad.

Speaking of the Landship, I finished it last night. They severely reduced the difficulty when doing the "kidnapped" route with a Strong Emperor; in the original I remember you absolutely needed several Martial Arts users and Mages, and you had to not only clear the Landship with that party but also defeat Bokhohn himself without any of your stolen gear. In this remake... you have to fight 1 encounter and then there's a chest containing all your stuff. I'm actually pretty disappointed with how they changed it. Granted, the original scenario was considerably easier to just use the tactician later and get in that way, so now they've brought them both up to nearly the same difficulty. But to me, the Landship scenario was a perfect example of what made this game so weird and unique; the fact that they didn't try to make either approach equally balanced was Cool and Neat!
