RIP Chadwick Boseman

Last night I could not stop thinking about how he was pushing through STAGE 4 COLON CANCER to make his last set of movies and the doors that opened up to get Hollywood to realize that yes, this is what people want. Then I read this excerpt from an interview where he talked about the thought put into his character's accent and may have cried a little bit.

Wow. What a loss.

I have only seen bits and pieces of Shuri's role in the comics but have really dug what I saw.

This fucking suuuuuuuucks.

I do wonder how they'll deal with it in BP2. Even passing the torch, they can't just off-screen him. Luckily, the BP suit is 100% CGI, so I guess there's that, but... ugh. shit.

One millionth-ing Shuri for BP.

Rewatched Black Panther last night. Fuck this is so fucked. Gonna watch Da 5 Bloods soon too.

It'll be weird no matter what they do, whether they kill the character offscreen, recast, or do some digital reanimation thing like they did with Carrie Fisher.

I have to think that recasting is off the table entirely. They were able to get away with replacing people like Terrance Howard and Edward Norton because that was still early goings for the MCU, and those actors had been in only one movie each. Chadwick Boseman's been in three of the biggest films of all time (plus Civil War, which is great but didn't blow up the box office and the discourse like BP, IW and Endgame did), and really owned the role of T'Challa.

If Black Panther II opens with T'Challa's funeral, I think everyone will understand the reasoning for the offscreen death. Personally I'd rather not see any extensive, awkward CGI flashbacks, but if Shuri visits the ancestral realm and has a moment with him there I'm pretty sure I'll start sobbing in the theater.

If nothing else I imagine Ryan Coogler would oppose recasting.

Wakanda is the MCU's strongest setting by far, and Black Panther went out of its way to give multiple characters the spotlight, so I don't think they'll have trouble anchoring a movie without T'Challa. They... they have to realize the torch should pass to Shuri, right?

did i do all of that?

Yeah, I don't know what else they could do, it has to be Shuri.

...god, this sucks. Not Shuri being Black Panther, that'd be cool. Just it'd be cooler if it were under happier circumstances.

Man, I am more sad about this than I expected to be. It’s incredibly sad for his family & his fans, and everyone already has so much grief to deal with. It seems like he was a genuinely kind and good person.

If nothing else, RDJr using his position and voice to bring up the George Floyd protests, reaching out to Boseman in that regard (as a "listening tour"), and then saying BP was the crown jewel of the MCU was pretty decent of him. I hope the rest of Boseman's costars keep up the allyship of his own social justice projects and engagements.

It looks like they finished filming Ma Rainey's Black Bottom already, so I guess now it will be his last ever movie. It's an adaptation of one of August Wilson's Pittsburg Cycle plays (the same play cycle the movie Fences also came from) that also features Viola Davis.

It's coming in December:

Hope this turns out well and that maybe these sad circumstances get some more people to watch something by August Wilson who might not otherwise, his work is great but not a lot of people watch or read plays.
