Retronauts

Mr. Sensible

Pitch and Putt Duffer
I double-checked for this thread, but it seems we never resurrected it from TT 2.0. So let's discuss Retronauts, the number-one podcast for old people who enjoy old video games!

I greatly enjoyed the recent Patreon-exclusive episode about Ghost Trick, my personal GotY from way back in 2011 (which also means this game is a decade old, dear lord). Was also very refreshing to have not just one, but two great female guests (Nina and Maddie) talk about it. Finally, although I've long since finished the game, it was very considerate of Bob to split the podcast into "no-spoiler" and "spoiler-tastic" halves. And now I'm playing through Ghost Trick again, because why not?

It's still fantastic, by the way; please play it, especially if you're also a fan of the Ace Attorney games. I understand the original DS version is starting to climb in price on the aftermarket, but I assume the iOS version still works alright on modern Apple devices?

That was an excellent episode, yeah - and it made me want to replay Ghost Trick, which I haven't done since it came out. It's so good!

For anyone who hasn't already - PLAY GHOST TRICK

I really liked the Xenogears episode with Andrew Vestal, gave some good context to the timeframe. Related, the episode about 90's game websites also with Vestal and Brandon Teel was a nice "I'm old, let's talk about what we created when we were young" nostalgia visit.

I also really enjoy Diamond Feit's audio versions of their weekly column. More often than not, I'm not driving in a car alone for long periods of time, so I only get to do long podcasts when I'm snowblowing or mowing the lawn. I can fit in a 10 minute article read while cooking dinner, so I like those. It's a good evolution of the old Retronauts Micro feel.

Yeah the Feit mini eps are great. I was seldom motivated enough to actually open the patreon app and read them when it was just a weekly blog post but they work great in audio form.

My good friend and Video Death Loop podcast co-host John Hurst is a guest on the Street Fighter 1 episode now up on Patreon. It's really weird and cool to be listening to an episode of this show I've enjoyed for like 15 years with somebody I know in real life on it. Also he does a really good job and y'all should check it out.

I did, when it was new, but a friend borrowed it and, long story short, I can't get it back again. I hate that Capcom won't release an Android version and no way I'm paying over $150 for a used version, let alone 200 for a new one 😭

Meanwhile, I'm listening to Episode 356 in the background, and it's killing me that I can only just barely recognize the chiptunes used during the breaks, but I can't identify the games they come from. I assume they're all from 1991 games, since that's the topic of the episode, but still. Little help?

I'm starting to become convinced that Parish uses the term "belt-scroller" to mean the opposite of what it actually means to troll me, specifically.

I always thought a belt scroller was a side-scrolling beat-'em-up where you can move towards and away from the screen ala Streets of Rage

That is correct. Parish uses it to refer to games like Irem's Kung-Fu and the first two Splatterhouse games.

Oh! I thought it meant a game where you can move towards the right but not to the left. Like Double Dragon and such.

Can't it apply to these and Beat'ms?

I mean, as long as the main character wears a belt, right?

No. It specifically refers to the depth aspect, which Kung-Fu doesn't have. Like a conveyor belt, apparently.

I thought when Capcom released a "belt-action" collection, it might get Parish to realize, but alas. It seems not.

I confess, I'd not heard the terms "belt scroller" or "ratchet scroller" until I heard them on Retronauts, so I still don't understand the difference lol

Phantoon

I cuss you bad
The point of a ratchet is it can only go in one direction. If you try to go the other way it locks. A conveyor belt has no such restriction.

Final Fight and Streets of Rage are both belt and ratchet scrollers for most of the game, just to complicate things

Ya boy ThornGhost makes his Retronauts debut in the most recent, Scott Pilgrim focused Patreon Retronauts episode. @madhair60 is in it too so it's like 50% Talking Time posters by volume. I had a lot of fun and I think it turned out well so please enjoy it!

(I am credited as Aaron in the episode if you are wondering which of the non-Parish, non-Madhair guests I am.)

Thank you! Actually the second episode I recorded, a history of Koei, hit the Patreon feed today as well. We did our best, but it was a tough topic. Hopefully you can be entertained and educated, just like Koei's old slogan!

I'm going to bump this thread because I was on Retronauts again - this time with my Video Death Loop cohost John as we join Jeremy and Shane to talk about Metal Gear Solid 2. It's a Patreon exclusive, but it's live today. Spoiler: I use this appearance to talk about ham radio.

Awesome, will check that one out! I haven't been listening 100% recently, but I still like the short This Week in Retros, and some of the odd fun ones like Green Mario and Game Manuals. There's Too Much Content nowadays!

I love hearing Metal Gear episodes on Retronauts. Which is odd, because I have no interest in playing a Metal Gear game, and have never even touched Solid 2. Looking forward to listening to it tonight!

Yeah, there's a lot, I skipped Skyrim and Dark Souls, because I... just don't care? Green Mario was good stuff, though. And Diamond's weekly bits are just lovely.

I am generally surprised, how much I enjoy episodes about games, that I actually don't care about. The enthusiasm that they always bring to their episodes adds a lot. It actually made me try Metal Gear Solid again, some time ago (still don't like playing these games), and made me want to try Skyrim (expexted the game to be much cheaper by now, considering that neither Morrowind nor Oblivion worked for my, I'll pass for that price).

Retronauts allowed me to interview the creators of Star Control 2 and it was the best thing i've ever gotten to do in the industry.
