Thank you much! Yeah, unintuitive is a good word for it.

There's also some other kinks that are bugging that I'm gonna try to work out by playing around with the settings later. For example, whenever I quit a game, I have to THEN exit out of RetroArch to get back to my nice neat 351Elec games list. That's an extra step I don't wanna do. I'm sure there's something I can switch around somewhere to not have to do that every time.

This has all still been absolutely worth it, though.

There is: press start and select together twice, it should bring you back to the main menu. If you don't like these buttons, try this:

Pull up Retroarch while in a game. From the “Quick Menu”, press B one to back out to the Main Menu. Move the cursor to the right to find the Settings menu, then scroll down to the Inputs section. Press A to enter the Inputs settings, then scroll down until you find the Hotkeys section, then press A again to enter these settings. For “Hotkey Enable”, set it to a different button (I recommend the F button) back out with B and find the "Save configuration" bit and that's done.

Just to check, are you doing safe shutdown when you turn it off? It's an easy thing to miss

Yeah, to close it down hit Start. Select Quit, Shutdown System, then Yes. Don't hold the power button, there's a danger you'll corrupt the firmware. That's the only gotcha.

Buddy, you have been a lifesaver on this particular endeavor!

I also copied the roms that came with it to an external drive so I could cherry pick a few favorites for the new install. This is the first time I’ve ever played the arcade Alien vs Predator, and I ain’t bout to make that harder to play again than I have to.

Heh, I had to work it out once already, no sense in other Tyrants having to go through that.

I should probably add a part 2 to the "set F to be the function button". Once you've done that, F and Start twice will close the game. It's betterfor games like Link's Awakening where you don't want to shut it down when you're trying to save.

Have you tried Retro Achievements? They're pretty fun. Create an account at Retroachievements.org, sign into it on the RG351V, watch meaningless numbers go up as you play games. It's addictive!

So, I'm thinking about getting one of these on Saturday:

But I have a couple questions for those that have these. I would primarily use it to connect my N64 and Saturn to my HDTV - is it worth the $300 for this, or should I consider modding each of those systems to output HDMI instead? Also, does the Retrotink have an option to force 4:3? I assume it would, but my stupid TV doesn't let me select that aspect ratio for HDMI connections.

The 5x automagically goes to 4:3. Saturn natively outputs RGB and I don't think has an HDMI mod, current state. The N64 HDMI mod costs a fortune, you'd be better served to get one of these and install the RGB board, which is way, way cheaper.

I'm considering this again myself. Already have a TINK 2X I don't use much, though, so... dunno, might hold off a bit longer. I blame the MiSTer. :ROFLMAO:

I had a bad experience with the tink 2x where it didn't output sound to one of my TVs (unless the mode change button was held down), and the response I got was along the lines of "Must be an issue with your TV". I still used it, but I had to run the audio through my stereo instead of the TV. I think this was maybe addressed with later versions of the 2x but I wasn't much impressed with the support.

I ended up getting a TINK 2x mini, which after watching some videos, is pretty much designed for the N64 and comes with an s-video cable, so hopefully that will work for me. I may install the HDMI mod eventually, but I'll wait to see if/when it's available. Thanks everyone!

I’m not sure if this is the right thread for this, but here goes.

I hacked my 3DS yesterday, and I’m trying to get everything set up the way I want it. So far, I have:

GameYob - runs GB and GBC games
VirtuaNES - runs NES games
Snes 9x - runs SNES games
Twilight Menu++ - runs GBA and DS games natively (on hardware, not emulated), and has a bunch of emulators built in.

After messing around for a bit, I realized that I could just run everything through Twilight Menu. It looks nicer than the other ones (it’s a virtual DSi menu, and you can add game covers), but, I feel like SNES and NES games run a lot better in the standalone emulators.

I looked through the settings and the file system and found that Twilight Menu uses NESDS and SNEmulDS, and the programs have .nds files.
I looked up VirtuaNES and SNES9X, and they each have .3dsx files, with .cfg and .sdmh files in the same folders.

Is it possible to swap in other emulators into Twilight Menu? Based on the file names, it seems like the built in ones are made for DS. Maybe that’s just a limitation of the program? I know a bunch of people here have hacked 3DS’s, so wondering if anyone else has run into the same situation.

What she said, but also look into Bubble2K16's various emulators if you can. Bubble made emus for the Genesis, Super NES, NES, and Turbografx-16, and they all run beautifully on "New" class 3DS hardware. (They run okay on the old machines, but don't expect any Sega CD or SuperFX chip games to function worth a crap!)

I personally found Twilight Menu to be more trouble than it's worth, but it may be the only way to run DS games off an SD card without the aid of a flash cart. There may have been forwarders that let you do this too, but they're far from user friendly and not completely reliable.

Ah, I have an Old 3DS XL. I’ll still take a look at Bubble’s emulators. [It turns out I’m already using Bubble’s emulators. Those are the ones I wanted to add to Twilight] I may end up just using Twilight for GB, GBC, GBA, and DS, since it seems to run those games well.

I’ll take a look into injecting games too. Can I do that with a mac? Edit- looks like Ican do it using wine. I don’t think I want to mess around with that right now, but maybe down the road.

Another thing to note with Twilight is it the built in emulators are still running in DS mode, so you’ll have screen resolution issues with NES and SNES regardless of if you change the underlying emulators used.

Honestly though Twilight for GB/GBC is probably the better option, unless you prefer to use something like mGBA. The gameyob port for 3DS never worked very well.

Ok, that makes sense. I suspected something like that might be the case. I would like cover art for games and Twilight seemed like the easiest way to do that. I'll look into injecting roms when I have a chunk of free time and want a project to work on. For now, just having a ton of games on my 3DS is pretty great.

I checked in the files, and Twilight uses Gameyob. So, I think it's the same either way. Or, do you think using the DS version via Twilight would work better than the 3DS version?

Awesome! I had the one where you cross a tank over a bridge while it's raining bombs, and one where you are driving a jeep in the wilderness picking up hitchhikers. And one where you are driving a race car in a straight line and the track is way too crowded.

And that's just the Radio Shack LCD gaems.

You better believe they did!

(Actually, they probably just bought licenses from a bunch of other manufacturers, because it was Tandy and they did that sort of thing. I have an Astro Command that's Tandy branded, but was actually designed by Epoch.)

One other Tandy game I had was Zap, where a kid who looked like Astro Boy ran up and down shooting surprisingly horrifying aliens. They were as Gigerian as that tiny black and white screen would allow.

Holy crap, they made a ton of them.

That's a great website btw - it's going to be fun poking around it and learning about all these old LCD games so few people care about these days (even if I don't think I want to collect non-Nintendo ones). Thanks for linking it!
