Wild. That's a cool idea for sure. That reminds me, I need to get back to fiddling with the MC2SIO I bought - there's a newer version of OPL that works better with it now.

That's pretty neat, although the load times you save are kind of offset by how cumbersome it is to have a whole second computer acting as your file server. Like, worth it if you play a LOT of PS2 games, but otherwise maybe not? Sadly not much use to me either way, as I only have a fat PS2 and no ethernet adapter and also buying a Raspberry Pi is fucking impossible right now. I keep meaning to look into the other methods of loading games via hard drive or USB, but I haven't really been motivated enough to do the legwork.

Analogue makes good products, but the way they sell them drives me up the fucking wall. Thankfully, they're moving away from the "drop a bunch on the store all at once and watch the site collapse" model of selling stuff; these days you can preorder a Pocket at any time and you'll just get put into the next available fulfillment group. But something about the LAST EVER CHANCE TO BUY thing really rubs me the wrong way, couldn't exactly say why. Whoever does the marketing for Analogue has given their brand an extremely punchable vibe.

Anyway, the Super Nt is a good system, and if you can manage to get one at retail price, then go for it. But for anyone who is contemplating paying inflated scalper prices, can I direct you to the MiSTer thread right over here? Unfortunately, the main FPGA board for the MiSTer has gone up in price since the pandemic started, so it's a bit more expensive to get into than it used to be. But the quality of emulation is unmatched and you get a whole bunch of systems for your money!

I am extremely ignorant about Analogue's products, so apologies if this is a very basic question: what is the difference between getting a SuperNT vs. having an SNES and using a fully featured flashcart?

Basically just that the SuperNt does the upscaling for you, making it easier to play on a modern TV. You can also jailbreak a SuperNt, which then allows you to dump carts. But otherwise, if you have a SNES and a flash cart, you're most of the way there.

HDMI out is a big one, since most modern tv's don't have composite/s-video inputs anymore. Also, the new consoles work with bluetooth controllers, not just wired ones. If you've got an old tv or an upscaler plus a flash cart, you've got most everything that Analogue's products do.

I'll just add here that if you're finicky about video quality, most SNES models have notoriously noisy video, requiring either a mod or searching out very particular serial number ranges to get clean video that upscales well.

Analogue also made an announcement about the other cart adaptors for the pocket. I’d been hoping the NGPC one would come available before my pocket shipped and I could add it to my order and not pay the exorbitant international shipping again. Looks like the new adaptors are only available as a set for $99 to ship late next year, so I guess I won’t be getting one.

Somebody sell me on the AVS. I've been tempted in the past to get one, but are the advantages enough over real hardware?

John

(he/him)
Similar to the deprecated Analogue NES consoles, it'll let you play original carts over HDMI (720p resolution). It doesn't have a bluetooth module though, so you have to provide your own controllers.

How's the accuracy compared to real hardware? Part of me is thinking it might be good to get one since I'm sure my actual NES systems will start failing soon (barring a recap). And not having to use an adapter for Famicom games is pretty great. I recently (finally!) modded my Hyperkin converter for expansion audio, but it still feels a little kludgy.

For the record, I don’t think the Super Nt or Mega Sg have built-in Bluetooth support. 8bitDo makes a receiver that plugs into a Super Nintendo controller port, which is how people sync various Bluetooth controllers to the systems.

Mike is correct, when I got mine in the original run, I got a controller with it and it's an 8bitdo controller with a Bluetooth receiver. And it's now relegated to the 2P port, because I now have an 8bitdo 2.4ghz controller.

Anyone hear any reports on the Retroid 3+?
I love the 2+, but it’s screen and small size means that playing most games intended for anything with a screen larger than a GBA is kind of rough on the ol’ peepers and a bit too cramped for anything action oriented to be tremendously comfortable

I was one of the suckers who got a 3 before the 3+ was announced...and it's pretty darn good despite that? The screen is only slightly smaller than the RG552 but the form-factor of the whole device is much better. I've used it a bunch for Android games (which it's much better for than the 2+ because of the screen size and shape) and streaming Steam from my pc (which also has worked very nicely). And the N64 is beautiful on it.

Would I be able to just slap the memory card from my 2+ into a 3+ and carry on from there or would I have to format it first and move everything over again?

...I haven't a goddamn clue. I started fresh because I wanted both handhelds for different purposes/focuses.

Retroid Pockets are Android based, right? If that is the case it should probably be fine unless you formatted the card for storing Android apps too.

Please report back, Mr Prime. I'm about to start getting my next generation handhelds and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Kazin

did i do all of that?
(he/him)
I know it's a lot more expensive, but the Steam Deck blows all these things out of the water for emulation, though I suppose it's not exactly pocketable...

It wouldn’t get ordered until after Squishmas, and the 2+ took a while to arrive, so it probably won’t be until late January

Speaking of all these portable emulation systems, my brother snagged a Miyoo Mini V2 for really cheap ($7!) the other day and gave it to me. It's quite small (2.8" screen), but dang if I'm not quite impressed by the little thing. I threw OnionOS on there and it has some neat features, the d-pad feels pretty solid, and I could see just jamming it into a pocket to play occasionally. Only big gripe is that the L/R triggers are awkwardly positioned for larger hands.

Where on earth did your brother snag a $7 Miyoo Mini? I'm jealous! I've wanted to try one out, but not for the $65+ I'm seeing them for on Aliexpress.
