Oh hai! Um...am I supposed to do something here?
pacman-videogame.gif
Shall I??!
shi-pixel.jpg
NO! *ahem* I've been handed a script by some.......puppet thing?

puppet.jpg
I am Puppet Von Puppington, my dear, and please recite the following script with the audience. I am positively spent.

marina.jpg
Pssst, they're the new marketing and outreach peep, Shi...

shi-pixel.jpg
Oh! Why didn't anyone tell me?
vash.jpg
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
marina.jpg
...Vash, sssssshhh! You're not supposed to be revealed to the audience yet!

shi-pixel.jpg
*ahem* The Talking Time forum is hereby called forth to provide the Valdez Museum of Video Game Box Art...wait, are we actually...
marina.jpg
*nods furiously*

shi-pixel.jpg
...to provide the Museum with pristine selections of the very best singular or two lines of video game dialogue either uttered aloud or depicted in a textual display. What qualifies as a viable selection? Vash, your cue.
vash.jpg
"What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets!"
shi-pixel.jpg
This is exactly the sort of sampling we are requesting! However, if one were to provide the entire monologue as follows...
vash.jpg
"What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets! But enough talk! Have at you!" or something like that. Don't hesitate to call me again!
shi-pixel.jpg
...the two additional lines verily disqualify. God, who actually writes like this?

*stares*

You may conjure up a list of 25 nominations ranked top to the bottom with #1 being weighted far more heavily than against the second, and so on. I am sure you all have many bubbling questions just pupating to be spoken, and we shall listen and respond appropriately! Shi Kurai will now provide the initial rules which may subsequently be modified or appended through this nomination cycle. Forsooth, have a jolly time digging deep in your psyche for the richest soil of words utterly uttered!

...*sigh* Well, this is awkward as sh--

SHI!
shi-pixel.jpg
FINE! Fine. Here be the rules per WilburCar360noscope:
1) This is the biggest one. Please DON'T BUST IN HERE AND BE AN ASSHOLE. This is meant to be fun!

2) As Puppet wrote above, submit a list of 25 one to two line dialogue spoken by a single character ranked fave to still a fave but not as much of one to me via PM. It would be helpful to list the character and game the line is from as well, as it's possible the lines have been referenced in multiple titles at this point!

3) Once tallied, I will be recording puppet recordings for each single finalist for the top 50. So it'll take time to do that, so please understand I will be doing this at a slower pace. My thought is doing Fri/Sat/Sun posts on the days I'm not working 10 hours.

4) If you're curious about the characters not named Pac-Man, Vash, or Marina, check out my blog: https://jfieldsted.wordpress.com/tag/so-this-webcomic. I've done four contests (three on my own and one with Issun), so they shouldn't be completely foreign haha.

5) I will have my little silly skits a la above on occasion, but the puppet theater is meant to be the main attraction. This may be tied to the Valdez Museum, but it'll mostly be focusing on Puppet and not my art/characters as much.

6) Please ask questions and I'll respond below.

7) Let's make the deadline July 1st since I'll be on vacation for a few days afterwards to get this started.

8) I think that's everything. I'm exhausted lol.

Here we go again...

Hi! A couple things have come up in DM form, so I'm going to address them here:
  • Please provide the full quote in text form in your submission; I don't have the time to watch Youtube clips to make an assumption on the timeframe provided on what you're nominating to put into my spreadsheet. Sorry!
  • Please be sure to include the character (if applicable) and the title of the game the lines appear in.
  • Please make sure you're providing the quote as it appears in the game. I had to really dig into one of my own submissions to make sure I got it right since it's a paraphrasing of a supposed philosopher's quote, lol.
  • To be clear, any text/dialogue is allowed, such as win quotes, announcers in fighting games, specific proclamations, and the like.
  • Lastly, if a line is cut off by another character, as follows, it is not eligible in full; only the first part before the line is interrupted:
    • "You cannot mean--"
    • "You don't want to finish that thought!"
    • "--that we're the baddies?"

What if the dialogue can be spoken by multiple characters but only a single character at a time can say the line?

Also, what if the dialogue is spoken by an unnamed, unseen narrator?

For #1, if it is the same line uttered by multiple characters limited by the technology of the time, it should be credited to who said it first. So if Shi and Marina both say "What's up Doc?" but it's limited by it being delivered by text so Shi is listed first and Marina second, it would be credited to Shi.

For #2, that's fine as long as it's "spoken" by someone within the definition of the game. So the Super Metroid narrator who verbally says "The galaxy is at peace" is fine even though it's not a defined character; they can be listed as "narrator".

#1 is for generic lines that can randomly be said by any character so I'm guessing they don't qualify.

Ah, I see what you mean. Assign it to who you want it to be in that case, but it may make it harder for me to place it if everyone picks someone different. That might be a case where I consolidate it to the game itself in tallying, but we'll see how frequently that happens.

Thanks for the clarification but I get the feeling that they won't appear on anyone else's list.

But I still like them so I think I'll keep the one that's easiest to tie to a specific character (and is the character you're mostly likely to hear it from first).

...

Now to think of some more quotes I like that actually fit the criteria.

I'm doing one like that but just putting "NPC", this specific one is famous enough it doesn't matter which direction the player went and who they encountered first, the NPCs read the same thing from the dialogue bank.

If it helps to know what it is, Skyrim's arrow to the knee. I'll provide the full quote and more context when I submit of course.

Just writing to say I’ll be submitting quotes in the future, just not yet as im a bit sick atm. Incredibly cool concept for a thread!

That's totally fine :)

At first I didn't think I'd be able to think of 25 things for this, but after considering it more there is actually a lot of iconic lines across all of video games...

As a reminder, I'm asking for one to two sentences of text/spoken dialogue per entry.
"What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets!" - OK!
"What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets! But enough talk! Have at you!" - Too many!

To be clear, I'm counting a period, question mark or exclamation point as the end of a sentence. An ellipsis (...) is not considered the end unless it is broken by another character interjecting.
Apologies if half my lines end up being from a single game. :3
Not a problem at all!

Yeah, honestly when you replied asking if I can attach what character said each line, I looked back at my list and just thought "No, actually!" I will try to add an addendum for the like 5 on the list that aren't from some unseen narrator or actively ambiguous though... And maybe revise a couple.

I would appreciate that (and please do provide me the character names for the others, it's in the rules).

Dear heavens, the anticipation for my auditions are excruciating! Where lie the total submissions as of this very moment?
flavia.jpg
Seven.
puppet.jpg
A smashing beginning with two weeks on the calendar remaining! By jove, we may truly send this museum's fortunes into the stratosphere!
flavia.jpg
Perhaps you should introduce the idea to the gaming forum? Not every TT'er comes in here...
puppet.jpg
Bloody brilliant, Miss Flavia! I see why you've been the anchor of this institution thick and thin! I'm off!
flavia.jpg
.............flattery will get you nowhere.

I keep thinking of quotes I want to add when I'm in the shower, or in the lab, or walking the dog and have no way to take notes. Then... poof. Gone. Bah!

puppet.jpg
Verily, one week remains for script submissions! If my errand lad has DM'ed you a request to adjust your tallies, please reply to him! And if you need additional hours and/or days to get those lines in tip-top shape, also DM the dear boy. Questions may continue to pour into this forum thread. Thank you much!

It's okay, I had a line from Silent Hill 2 that wasn't spoken but was text on a wall on mine for a bit, lol. Glad you caught it, though.

There was a line that I wanted to add but when I checked I realized it was from an ad for the game and wasn't actually in the game.

List sent. I thought I was going to come up way short but I actually had to cut a few iconic lines.

Tis a daunting challenge to find your limits! Kudos on shortening the field, so to speak! Two days remain, and the resulting tallies are beginning to show some consistency! My acting soul is BURNING BRIGHT!
