Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Anyone playing this? Best Buy shipped my copy early so I actually started playing it today and, uh, it's super good. I've never played a R&C game before, so I don't have any real comparison to make with the others, but the game is gorgeous and funny and precisely the kind of palate cleanser I've needed from the recent stuff I've played.

I cannot really overstate how impressive the visuals are here.

I think it was mean of them to put it on the PS5
Hard agree.

Reviews say it’s biggest issue is it’s pretty much the same game as all the other ones so if you feel like you want a bit more, 4-so, you’ve got some catching up to do.

Up your Arsenal probably remains my favorite to this day but Into the Nexus was short and sweet, which was appreciated.

If the only complaint is that it's more Ratchet & Clank, that's certainly not an issue for me! Will definitely give it a look when I finally, uh, buy a PS5. Might be a while.

I think Going Commando ended up being my favorite, but UYA is also great. I mean, they're all good, it's kinda like Mega Man in that most of the entries are worth playing.

I think Crack in Time was my personal favorite, but yeah the games in this series tend to blur together for better or worse. Did you add the PS4 remake of the original to your digital library while they were giving that out for free?

Yeah, pretty sure I did. Haven't rolled around to it yet, though - low bandwidth means I have to lug the PS4 to work.

Sometimes I forget that one of the most impressive things on these next-gen consoles is the lack of loading. I'm sure there's some tomfoolery happening but if there's any loading (as we now traditionally think of it), I haven't seen it. It essentially feels like playing on cartridges again. And loading into the game from the menu is super quick.

Some more screenshots. Trying to avoid spoilers but I never know what someone else considers a spoiler.

The photo mode is impressive. I haven't played around with all the options but they're fairly extensive.

What you can kinda of see in the photos, although they don't really do it justice, is how impressive the lighting and particle effects are. The ray-tracing in particular is something I've come to appreciate that I didn't know I even wanted.

Not really tomfoolery so much as really freaking high bandwidth. Up to 5.5 GB/s from the SSD uncompressed, which is bonkers fast. The Series X "only" clocks in at 2.4 GB/s uncompressed, and that's still crazy fast. Compression roughly doubles that.

I'm irritated that I can't play this because I haven't gotten a PS5 yet

Totally get and empathize the frustration of wanting to play but can't b/c new hardware, especially when access to that hardware is being limited by extreme demand/pandemic influenced shortages. But from what I've seen of the game, it couldn't have existed on PS4 without severely compromising the game at the very least. The portal gimmicks and complete lack of load times are dependent on the SSD infrastructure and just wouldn't work on PS4. I'm playing FF7R: Intergrade right now, and it's turned 40s loading screens into <2s. Imagine being able to play a game like that built from the ground up for PS5 without all the hidden loading screens built into all the slow tight passage ways that Cloud has to keep shuffling between.

I'm actually mildly disappointed for every new game these days that's cross-gen. It kinda bums me out that the next wave of games are being hobbled by having to built around 8 year old hardware limitations. The lack of load times and being able to build your worlds around that is really the #1 game changing thing about next gen hardware this time around, and we're going to really begin seeing this new gen of games sing once devs can begin shedding the baggage of having to support parity with last-gen hardware. Again, big bummer if you don't have a PS5 yet, but once you guys get one eventually, you'll Get It.

The start of this game is held together with duct tape. I've had two major glitches and a softlock in the first ten minutes, just from doing what I would just call Normal Platforming Stuff. You go off the beaten path even slightly and it falls to pieces.

That first one was the softlock. The third example was much like the first, elsewhere, but I was able to break out of it.
Thanks for the warning, I won't try to go OOB.

Other than the absolute rigidity it seems like a pretty good time so far. I like that you can actually make the game difficult

I'm not upset at the game being PS5 exclusive, I'm upset at difficulty of acquiring a PS5.

So I guess I enjoyed it.

No, seriously. Tremendously good game. Makes me wish I had played the R&C games sooner but better late than never. I know it's June and we're only halfway done but GOTY contender for sure.

I just picked this up last night and played through up until you 'Hack' the statue to get a ship to follow Rivet.

It's definitely a new R&C game, and thats all I need. Got all the gold bolts so far too from what I can tell.

I played through the first few planets over the weekend. It's really great. I haven't played one of these since Deadlocked, and I think I had forgotten just how good this series is.
