I'm sure a lot of people think of him from The Player, Robert Altman's satirical meta-noir (which... I have not seen yet) but even more, myself included, remember him as Kevin Bacon's best from Tremors.

Fred Ward always struck me a premiere "that guy!", an actor who maybe you don't really think about but when he shows up in something your reaction is "oh, its that guy!"
He's great in Tremors (and Tremors 2 but don't quote me because I haven't revisited that movie as an adult).
