PS5 Launch Lineup?

So we're absolutely getting the Miles Morales Spider-Man, along with the remastered OG Spider-Man. Other than that, the launch lineup seems pretty lackluster. The Pathless looks somewhat interesting, or at least pretty, colorful, and BotW-like, but even though today is listed as the release date Sony's page doesn't even have a price up.

What's everyone else looking at?

Picking up my Miles Morales and Demon's Souls pre-orders once the system (hopefully) arrives today. Barring that, I'm mostly looking forward to the PS+ line up of PS4 games I haven't played yet (Days Gone, God of War, etc.). I also never had a PS4 pro so I'll probably do some test runs of the backwards compatibility with some of my other PS4 games in my spare time since even running at PS4 Pro levels will be an increased baseline for me.

Definitely getting The Pathless, but I haven't decided whether to get instant gratification with the PS4 version or hold on just a bit longer for the PS5 one (Annapurna Interactive says getting one version entitles you to the other.) Spider-Morales is a must, but iffy on whether I should upgrade OG Spidey since I heard the saves aren't compatible and there isn't even a discount for owners of the original game.

I need to actually take Horizon Zero Dawn off my backlog before the sequel drops.

Apparently they're adding cross saves to Spidey Remastered, just not right away if that makes a difference. https://www.usgamer.net/articles/marvels-spider-man-remaster-2018-ps5-ps4-cross-save

We don’t have a PS5, and won’t for awhile most likely, but I’d wanted to get AC Valhalla for it. My pc is less powerful than a ps5, and the ps4 already struggled with Odyssey.

Would prefer to get it on discount since fuck Ubisoft, but being a strong Viking lady is a pretty big draw for me. I hope her VA is in the same solar system as Kassandra’s, but only time will tell.

So did Sony pack anyone else's PS5 upside-down in the box, or did I just get the VIP treatment?

AC Valhalla is out for delivery (along with the PS5) as I type this. Demon's Souls comes in on Monday. I also order Godfall for giggles just to have something to futz around with on lunch breaks but I'm not expecting much from that title. Immortals Fenyx Rising is a definite but that's not until the first week of December.

Outside of these, testing/playing Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, God of War, Overwatch, and a few others to see how they perform.

I poked around on the PS5 last night and this morning. I only got like an hour or so into AC Valhalla, but the opening experience was underwhelming to say the least. Framerate seemed fine and the graphics were mostly crisp. But it felt like a last-gen game that was badly ported. Higher resolutions meant that janky textures/objects stuck out like a sore thumb, and the procedurally generated animations just looked bad compared to a game with more polished animations. A lot of the UI and control mechanic changes were discombobulating, but that's usually the case with all new AC games and I'm sure time will take care of that. But the thing I thought was most disappointing was early on during the prologue, there was a point where a cutscene transitioned from in-game graphics to pre-rendered FMV. And it was painfully obvious because the game went from crisp 4K to a heavily compressed 1080p (at best) video for a scene that didn't even feel like it would have necessitated FMV over in-engine rendering considering not a lot happened in it.

Comparing that with booting up FF7R and it was like night and day. Weird how an actual last-gen game looked crisp and amazing compared to one ostensibly for next-gen. FF7R looked pretty incredible, and a lot of the really bad texture pop-in that I experienced playing it originally on a launch PS4 hasn't reared its ugly head yet. Fingers crossed that it holds up over the full course of the game.

That's pretty bizarre -- was it a situation where the FMV part happened in a separate location from the in-engine part? That's the only reason I can think of to do something like that, because the engine might not be able to load both locations at once. But even so, I can't imagine why they'd have to compress it that hard.

I have to assume it's either a system limitation thing from last-gen versions of the game, and/or just an artifact of a troubled development. Because nothing inherently crazy happens in the environment. The opening scene begins with an androgynous child version of the main character watching a raid against their home village. So some stuff catches on fire, and there's a lot of choreographed action that happens... but nothing that couldn't happen in-engine, unless the development was so troubled that they couldn't wait for that to be tackled in-game and just made it an FMV cutscene instead. Especially strange considering some of the crazier action set pieces in Origins and Odyssey didn't require FMV to carry out, like the burning of the Alexandria. And either way, there's no reason why that couldn't have at least been a higher quality video on next-gen systems if things were optimized better. It was just disappointing. And this coming from a person who was generally an apologist for Asscreed Unity when it first came out.
