Preversusly On The Televisiondome

Alright, we got all the noms in and the brackets are set up. This is one is going to have a lot of cliffhangers but don't worry because you won't have to wait for next season to see the results. Taking a risk starting on the extra-long weekend but I just couldn't resist. I hope everyone gets a little time off for Easter. Anyway, back to the name of the game: television.

We all chose some great music we associate with the medium. A lot of TV theme songs, some regular songs that appeared on TV, some music from within the show, a few televised versions of songs and a couple songs about TV.

Here's the bracket, by the way

It's a lot of TV. But let's not beat around the bush and get right into...

Round 1
Match 1
The first one up... HEY, THIS IS A MOVIE SONG. No, wait, it's a different version of the movie song. It's @SpoonyBard with Ghostbusters from the Real Ghostbusters. I decided to listen to the movie version to see if they used the same one and it does sound a bit different but I can't confirm is Ray Parker is reprising or it's a sound alike. Anyone know? Or maybe it's just a different mix. Meanwhile, the second choice is a perfect way to start with @Kirin picking a bop using tons of samples from TV and movies; "The Golden Age of Video" by Ricardo Autobahn. Some of the TV samples include South Park, the Simpsons, Sesame Street, Seinfeld, the Prisoner, Knight Rider, Mystery Science Theater 3000, 30 Rock, Family Guy, Moomin, and that just the stuff I can identify.

Match 2
Then we move onto @Olli 's pick of "Can't Leave The Night" by BADBADNOTGOOD from Lockwood and Co., an adaptation of a book series. It's by Joe Cornish, so maybe I should watch it. Though the show is from the UK, BADBADNOTGOOD is actually a Canadian group and the tune originated in the band's album III. Note that the link originally posted is now dead so I chose another version. I hope that's OK. And it's going up against @Falselogic 's pick of the theme to Airwolf which is, shockingly, NOT by Mike Post but instead is a Sylvester Levay joint. Fun fact, an Irish Airwolf superfan worked in conjunction with Levay to create the Airwolf official two-disc soundtrack over a five year period, which was finally released in 1999.

The Golden Age of Airwolf

Aw dang I already see a matchup I'm going to lose, but can't feel bad going down to such a good song.

Purple

Oh wow, really strong start. These are both really making me weigh things a while. Airwolf eventually came out on top just because wow that really was just a great theme song with a 30 minute timeslot dedicated to it that they had to fill with whatever, wasn't it.

The Real Ghostbusters came, saw and kicked its ass while Air Wolf is propelled to the next phase.
Some fun trivia about the winners.

Match 3
@Kirin nominates "Duvet" by BOA, used as the theme for the eerie cyberpunk anime Serial Experiment Lain. I never really watched this series outside the odd episode at my old anime club but that song is so great at setting the mood. Very 90s in a good way. But @Falselogic has his own iconic theme to bring to the game, the triumphant theme to the 80s hit The A-Team! It really is one that needs no introduction... if you are over 40. *turns to dust*

The A-Team
Match 4

Next is, by coincidence, two pieces that are on my phone. First is @Exposition Owl with Television Man by the Talking Heads. It's not FROM TV but it is about it, ruminating on his relationship with it. Against it is @WildcatJF with H.T., the theme to the anime Trigun. This one means a lot and I remember playing the show's soundtrack a lot when my family took a five day biking excursion to our cottage. We took turns driving up the road with the van while the rest biked (except my sister, who was getting... I think it was the Duke of Edinburgh award).

Serial Experiments Lain and abstain

I've never heard of Serial Experiments Lain before but boy does that intro look like that of Persona 3 FES. Anyone know if it's the same animation studios or something like that?

As far as I can tell, no direct connection and I don't see anything about Lain being an influence on Persona. I have only mild familiar with both but I feel they are totally quite different, though both being, I assume, full of teen angst. But Lain is not the kind of show we're a character whips out a power to fight an enemy.

Sorry, I'm not thinking it's similar in themes but just animation style/design.

We need a tie breaker for the Serial Experiments Lain/A-Team match up but Trigun moves on.

Match 5
First match has us "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush, courtesy of @Paul le Fou. The song is already a classic but what ties it to TV was it's use on Stranger Things which caused a massive resurgence and making it more popular than ever and charting after nearly 40 years since it debuted. This is up against a fairly catchy dark horse from @Daikaiju; the theme to the ALF animated series. Yeah, there was an ALF animated series, a prequel set on Melmac when Gordon had just joined his army. It was popular enough to get a spin-off where ALF appeared in fairytale stories.

Match 6
Next is @Violentvixen's pick Where Do I Begin by Shirley Bassey. The song was originally by Andy Williams based on the theme to the movie Love Story and this cool Shirley Bassey version ended up on the L Word (though I don't know if it ORIGINATED there or if it was merely part of an iconic scene). It's against @Olli and "Drop" by Pharcyde. I'm not exactly sure how this song related to TV (I haven't listen to it yet so maybe it's in he lyrics) but he's free to elucidate us.

I am pretty sure this remix was made for the show but not completely confident. It exploded among my friends when season 2 came up and the mp3 file I have is one I ripped from a friend's copy of the soundtrack CD, ha!

"Drop" by Pharcyde. I'm not exactly sure how this song related to TV
This video was HUGE, hard to vote against. @Olli will have to say reasons for nominating but the whole thing was performed backwards, it has Spike Jonze, the Beastie Boys, art from Gonz, etc.

I was trying to find an article and found this documentary, I cut to where it's talking about how they worked with a linguist to learn the words backwards.

Edit: Shoot, looks like the timecode doesn't come through when you can't embed on the page. Starts at 2m25s
