What's Shenmue?
I’ll be surprised if it follows the games at all. It will have Snake and a giant robot, and probably some characters with names from the games but tenuous resemblance to anything in the games.

I’ll be delighted if I’m wrong, though.
I really want to see a Metal Gear Solid film franchise follow the usual route that adaptations do in Hollywood, where the first film (or season) is a relatively faithful adaptation but all subsequent ones are purely original stories by the screenwriters. Not because I think it'd be an improvement, or that I think it'd even be anywhere as good, I just think that it's always fascinating when adaptations diverge— and MGS is prime fodder for one where that would be a huge, huge gulf.

Maybe a MGS2 film would follow the original plotline, heh.

Hard agree.

My only concern is that Metal Gear is, more than anything else, Kojimas attempt to cram as many action movies into a single Story as he can, and while that’s great for a video game, it requires a bit more of a deft hand to make that work as an actual movie.

Yessss an army of Snake clones fighting a trenchcoated Liquid in Metal Gear: Apocalypse.

Hopefully, this does Final Fantasy Spirits Within bad and bankrupts Konami so they have to sell all their IP’s to people that still make games.
I hope you didn't wish for that on a monkey's paw*.

Also, what if those IPs were all sold to EA?

Just cut straight to a Revengeance adaption, tbh.
The dreariness of that world is too familiar right now.

Downer aside - yeah go for it. I -still- like Raiden as much I did back when he first stole Solid's thunder. He still gets me in that scene from 4 fighting without both arms.

I’d say “there’s nothing I would like more” but then I remembered that we already got that once.

And, y’know what? There’s room in my heart to love it just as much the second time.

I want to be optimistic for this, but I'm worried that it will be just a generic military action movie without all the weirdness that really makes the series.

This really does feel like its destiny, right? Unless you have someone in Hollywood who is emotionally invested with a property, and also has a lot of cache and willing to go to bat for something at the helm of a film, these kinds of movies always end up workshopped to hell in efforts to launder all the fun and quirkiness out of them in order to make something "safe". And with the ghost of Konami on one end, and the rudderless Sony on the other, with zero involvement from guys like Kojima, it feels like fate that this is bound to be a disaster of Ghost in the Shell proportions.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a big nerd and seems to get it.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if Snake is duped by some corrupt military officer who is later shown to misrepresent the US military, and by the end Snake works alongside the good military types and gives a respectful nod to the US flag.

I'm never worried about the director for these kinds of projects. It's if the director is being given enough control over their projects or if the suits cram a bunch of focus-tested edits down their throats.
