One Piece (Beware, spoilers)

The way the Fishman Island is absurdly dangerous. I mean, it probably should be, but it's beyond me, how 99% of all sjips aren't destroyed or cres killed on the way down.

Not a complaint, I get that One Piece is primarily a manga where Oda throws stuff at the wall he finds interesting.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Fishmen Island is way better than I remembered it. That includes Hody, I think he is a great antagonist.

Break is over. And its a really exciting chapter.

Kobra was seemingly killed by the Revolutionaries, and Vivi vanished. So, I hope, hope, hope that means she is joining the Strawhats again. And maybe Kobra isn't dead, then, and it was just a ruse, or something.

I'm so excited.

Well, after two months, I read through all of One Piece. And I really suggest everyone to reread the post-timeskip part, if you only ever read it chapter by chapter, one week at a time. These long arcs post timeskip are so much better when you don't have to wait one weak every 25 pages.

Honestly, by now I think the arcs just got better and better. Punk Hazard was the only one that felt like a dud, and even that got pretty good in the second half. Elsewise, I enjoyed every arc from start to finish. Fishmen Island is great, Dressrosa is better, Zou is a nice, short arc that I still enjoy (god, I love the Minks), Wholecake is amazing and Wano (which, even this way, feels absurdly long) is fantastic. These long arcs work so, so much better this way, it's kind of incredible. Mainly, I guess, because you actually remember what happened, instead of forgetting half the details by the time a new chapter comes out.

Mainly, I want to note how much I like Big Mom. Kaido is still a bit meh for me, but I absolutely love her. And, even moreso than with Kaido, it felt incredibly epic when Law and Kid defeated her, after so much was thrown at that old bag. Oda did a really great job, at making her appear, while not invulnerable (which is important), to feel like an incredibly powerful opponent. It really felt like beating her was breaking in a new era. And the way her dream is so twisted and cruel was chilling - how she took Mother Caramels words and misinterpreted them in the worst way possible. But there is also this incredible sadness, of her just wanting to get back to the time when she celebrated with all her friends, shortly before they all were, uh, let's say gone. Her dream isn't for a future, like Luffys, it's for a past, recreating something that is long gone. And forcing everyone into her horrible version of a paradise.

It feels similar with Kaido, who can't seem to let go of Roger and Whitebeard, seemingly only being interested in an epic death, to beat them in the way he goes from this world. He, like Big Mom, is stuck very much in the past. And hurts people even worth. Wano is an incredibly chilling place, with all the ways it became hell for the people there.

Also, I didn't really understand it the first time, but Luffy just became a Looney Tune, when entering Gear 5. I guess that's why his basic power is "rubber", because he can twist it like Wily Coyote or Buggs Bunny.

So, One Piece is great. All of it (except for the specific parts that aren't, I'm sure you know them), it's a delight, and Oda gets better and better, as time goes on, at incorporating themes into the different arcs. Can't wait for the next chapter.

I won't get to read it till it hits the app on Sunday but I saw some preview images on the twittars, and does Shanks have a new arm? It looks like he's holding his sword in two hands in that silhouette shot.

New chapter is delightful. More WTF than funny, but funny all the same. I can't wait to learn how this happened.

Egghead Island looks amazing, I love the asthetic. I still think there is no way that Oda can end One Piece in 2025, considering we still have to visit Elbaf and do all the other stuff. Makes me a bit scared that he might rush things. But then, the pace already increased, so I'll just assume it will work out.

Did anyone see One Piece Red?

Gobsmacked by some of the revelations in the past few chapters. Most notably that Saul is not only alive, but also brought all the books from Ohana to Elbaf, which all but confirms that will be one of the remaining arcs, which was always likely but I was starting to worry. But also, Cipher Pol, and Rob Lucci, are at Egghead looking to stir up trouble, the revolutionaries are about to make a big move, Law is facing down Blackbeard, and most importantly we finally meet Dr. Vegapunk! His design is odd, but I bet his enlarged tongue is a reference to that one picture of Einstein, and let's be honest that's very One Piece.

After spending the past three hundred and fifty two years on Wano, Egghead Island feels like it's moving at a blistering pace.

So exciting! Egghead Island is a blast, and the pace is still faster than it has ever been. So this is One Piece, if Oda focuses on the essentials.

As much as I doubt the series is going to straight up give us a rematch between Luffy and Rob Lucci, because that would be too boring and straight forward, I'm not gonna lie I'm kinda excited at the thought. That moment was one of the last times I really loved the anime, after all.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I assume it will be more a case of showing how strong Luffy is now. Lucci is certainly not a pushover, on the contrary. But even from the bit we have seen by now, it looks like the power relation is inversed. I don't expect there to be too much of a problem for Luffy (I mean, not a simple win, but after winning against Kaido, he simply should be able to win here without too much difficulty, I feel like).. We will see, looking forward to find out, certainly.

Also, Luccis awakened form looks amazing, I love it.

Oh my god.

Kid seems to have reached Elbaf. Elbaf! I'm so excited, for whenever we finally get there.

Garp will go into action. Garp vs Blackbeard.

I'm so excited.

Interesting, Lucci looks terrified. Didn't expected to ever see such a look on his face. I guess Stussy is a succubus, considering what she is boss of.

Man, since we left Wano, the story moves so fast. We learn new stuff about the world in basically every chapter now. I feel like we have lost out in a bit of an arc for Franky or Robin here, which is a shame, and I do hope that Usopp will get his arc when we get to Elbaf (I'm so excited - even if we don't go there and just meet people from there, or something)

Also, Stussy is a succubus, or something. Was fun seeing Luccy going down. I guess she will join the crew for some time (not as a new, regular member, but as a guest).

Dear god, what a great chapter. My mind was blown, like, five times, I think? So much is happening, this is all amazing.

Also, what the hell is happening? I need answers. Seriously, I can't wait to learn more.

The dynamic between Lucci and Ecki is pretty fun.

I asked ChatGPT to write the next chapter of One Piece. Considering that it's knowledge ends in 2021, or something, it was still in Wano. Nothing spectacular, Luffy was fighting Kaido when Kid appeared, and they decided to fight together. I had to laugh, when Usopp told Sanji and Zorro that someone was planning something big, and it turns out that it's Orochi. ChatGPT makes that guy seem more dangerous than Oda ever did. That disgusting cockroach.

I look forward to reading the current arc of OP again when it's collected. I have a terrible time following events from week to week, but once they're in a volume I can track it all.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I feel like this arc has been better about reading them weekly than all the others since the timeskip? Maybe? The pacing has picked up so much, and nearly every chapter, we get some new revelation. I love this arc.

That said, it got really confusing at some point, and the details are lost on me. But that has been true for as long as I have been reading OP weekly, which is since Impel Down. I never can keep the details straight, when going from week to week, at least when things are getting heated. I think Dressrosa was one of the worst for me, in that regard.

But yeah, looking forward to rereading this one in one go.

It's partially a me thing, I think. I shotgun most of SJ in (aggregated) an hour or two, reading mainly for errors, so I don't really absorb the narrative of most things the first time through.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Oh, that makes sense. No way is it possible to get what's happening in this short timeframe. Especially with the increased pace. A shame, I guess the revelations won't hit so hard (or at all?), if you have to rush through it this way.

Still sounds like a pretty cool job.

It is! I also haven't read anything from before...I wanna say Water 7. So some of the long-simmering things aren't gonna land with me. Big stuff though, like the Joyboy reveal recently, still do!

In general, One Piece is just So Much that I think I'd need a couple reads no matter what. Visually it's very busy, and it switches POVs so much, that I can't really track the fights at all until the collected volume.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
That is probably a pretty absurd ask, but if you do enjoy One Piece, I suggest to read the whole thing, from start to finish. At the very least from the part where they enter the Grand Line, Alabasta and Crocodile are just important enough for that. But also, it's such a great epic, building slowly, and personally, I always feel like the slow start adds a lot to a story. It isn't even THAT bad - I read through it in something like a month, last year. That said, I don't take in the art as much as other people probably do, and maybe as I should.

But I get it, it's a ton of manga to read, and there is just so much of it, amount of pages and content on the pages. But I only feel a bit silly, when I call it the Les Miserables of Manga - both are absurdly long, and both are absolutely worth it.

But I guess if you do like it, you probably have good reason (I guess not enough time) not to read everything. Sorry. Just couldn't help myself doing a pitch here. No need to explain further, I absolutely understand that not everyone wants to read 100+ volumes. But then, maybe go through the chapters you never read. If you never read the short Foxy Arc, with the Davy Back fight, I found it hilarious. And it's just nice to see where stuff started, like how Zorro and Mihawk met the first time, or where Coby and Helmeppo come from. Especially the last two, every time when I see them again, is a joy, and I bet a big part of that is knowing their humble origins.

Ok, pitch time over, for real now. Sorry.

Someday, maybe, but a hundred+ volumes is very many. As a reaaaaaaaally long-running serial I think it's effective at letting you drop in and get it (which it has to be).

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Oh my god. Blackbeard is coming, it's getting even more serious. What the hell?

Also, uh, Shanks seems to be insanely strong. I expected Kid not to be done after one attack.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Due to an eye surgery, Oda will take a 4-week break. I hope he can use the time to get some actual rest, too.

This year’s chapters have been a delight. The series has really gone from strength to strength without interruption starting around the final chapters of Dressrosa, I feel.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I'd argue that series of Being on Fire started with Dressrosa, but I do agree - this year was excellent. This arc is, imo, one of the best since the timeskip (granted, it's partly because it feeds on a lot of context from decades of One Piece).

And this flashback. It's killing me. It's so intense, and it adds so, so much texture to many things that happened decades ago.

I love Egghead Island. I love One Piece. And I realized that I want to, whenever the series is done, to find out what novels added inspiration to this manga. With a focus on Les Miserable, because that is baked into the very foundation of One Piece. But also, there are enough arcs that are more directly referencing other novels (like with Thriller Bark, which is clearly partly based on The Island of Dr. Moreau and Frankenstein - plus a third one, as a youtuber pointed out, which I still have to read). I'd love to entangle it all, finding all that was inspiration for this wonderful series.

Dressrosa certainly had some great moments too, but there was a stretch or two that dragged badly - for some reason the arc felt longer and draggier to me than Wano, despite being considerably shorter.

But yeah, since then it's been fantastic with no sign of letting up.

Personally I found the Big Mom arc draggier in spots than Dressrosa. But I've only read bits and pieces from before Dressrosa.
