I would submit that, for all its faults, Ryse: Son of Rome is basically a really visually fancy beat-'em-up. This thought occurred to me out of nowhere.

Well, Paprium really does exist, as I got my copy in. And it also does have compatibility issues. I have no non-TMSS systems, but I found that an early TMSS one with the EXT port works fine. My Model 2 works fine. And all three of my VA6, non-"high def graphics" systems work... as long as you are hooked up to a Sega CD. Doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not, even, so there's probably some sort of bus termination issue at play here.

Sure looks like it!

What's fun, though, is that my wanting to test various configurations forced me to pull out my 32X. Both of them. One has always acted a little sketchy. The other didn't work at all. Well, I did some poking around and apparently the ribbon cables can become unseated pretty easily, so I cracked open the non-working one. Despite looking like they were in... they definitely weren't. Plugged them in tight and lo did my eyes behold glorious 32X graphics with no freezing... through composite. Ew. I really need to order a Model 2 SCART cable... or give in and get a HD Retrovision cable so I stop dealing with my stupid SCART-to-component converter.

Oh, right, Paprium. Well, turns out plugging in a 32X does make the game boot properly. Wild. So basically the only way it doesn't run that I've found is various VA6+ Model 1s without some sort of expansion plugged into it.

Oh DIP!

I learned today that Chronicles of Mystara is backwards compatible on Xbox Series X

Furthermore, I was also surprised to learn that the game wasn't ever delisted because its license ran out or some such malarkey.

FURTHERMORE, I ALSO learned that it cost less than the amount of credit I had in my account.

THIS IS A VERY PLEASING CONFLUX OF EVENTS!

It's very good. I believe also BC is DOUBLE IMPACT (Final Fight and Magic Sword) and Double Dragon Neon
Sadly missing is Charlie Murder

I thought at first that those numbers were supposed to be cartoony snakes, and I forgot for a moment which thread I was in.

Oh my god this is the best news. I love SoR4 so much. This'll be a great excuse to go back to it.

It’s out but can only be accessed if you download it through SoR4 itself;

Well… as long as it’s there, I guess.

Also; dang this is some good DLC for a scrawny ten dollar bill!

I love this.

Besides the actual revelation here, I also had no idea that was his voice! It makes me like the game even more to know that that's the voice of Yuzo Koshiro!

It's really strange hearing it perfectly reproduced after all this time.

In the original game, Yuzo Koshiro was all the voices, including Blaze.

This news rattled me to my core, and now I can’t help but wonder what else I’ve been mishearing all my life.

Has everything I’ve convinced myself is true actually a lie?!?

Anyway. I bought Konami's Vendetta for the Switch on a whim. I do remember this game in arcades, but as it turns out it's one of those titles that loses its flavor quickly after the first couple of quarters. Without a jump button, the characters lack vertical mobility, and they heroes are all really, really derivative. Hawk is Hulk Hogan, straight up. There is no difference but the name.

What's amusing is that the game is chock a block with stock sound effects and digitized voice. They were really shameless about this. Some of the intentionally funny moments are okay, but it seems like Konami didn't really nail beat 'em up comedy until Violent Storm, where the humor goes from Vendetta's obvious groin shots to the surreal (pick up piglets nursing from a mother pig and they instantly turn into footballs). Hey, Konami, when are you gonna give us this on Switch?

Love me some Violent Storm.

I’ve been playing a bit of Streets of Rage 2. I just managed to reach Mr X on my final life playing Axel and relying heavily on Grand (ground?) Upper. Probably a few more games and I’ll beat him, though the 1CC is probably a ways away.

I’ve been trying the game with different characters so far. My first shot with Skate was a revelation and I still find myself double tapping to run with characters who can’t do it. On that run I got to level four without losing a life and level five without continuing, then managed to use both continues and all lives without getting any further. I switched to Axel for the last continue and found him too slow and clunky to get anywhere (I guess playing him from the start today gave me more of a chance to get used to him in the easier early stages).

Next I tried Blaze, which went pretty well although I found her special attack very hard to land any hits with. For that run I wound up using both continues against R Bear, boss of the ship stage (5, I think). I just couldn’t find a way to reliably hit him.

I guess I should take a shot with Max next, though the idea of a slow character doesn’t have much appeal.

I’m finding the sticking points are pretty consistent. The stage 2 boss, Jet, and his many clones later in the game is always hard to hit. I’m finding waiting for his swoop and doing a jump kick works, but the damage is pretty small so it takes ages. The stage 3 boss is also annoying and recurs pretty often. Stage four’s boss is actually pretty easy but hits pretty hard if you mess up. I kept getting caught out with Axel trying to use grand upper after landing a few punches, because the boss can make himself invincible and counter attack while you’re hitting him. Bear on stage five, as mentioned, is just killing me at the moment.

Is there a way to make grabs more reliable? I often seem to get grabbed when I’m trying to grab, which makes me reluctant to use them. I’ve tried hitting an enemy and then moving in for the grab but they seem to recover before I can get them. I’d really like to be better able to grab bosses, but they seem to get me much more often than I get them.

I'd approach from above or below. If you get grabbed it's no big deal, hold up and jump and you'll instantly recover from their throw.

I took a shot with Max, and I was wrong. Max was great. He moves slowly, but his basic combo does enough damage to take out a Donovan. Plus I can just slide across the screen for speed. I made it to stage eight with him with three lives left on the last continue, but I had somewhere to be so I had to turn it off. SoR2 is a pretty long game, I think. Probably quicker if I were better at it.
