Apparently it's "Everybody Draw Mohammad Day" and I feel like while there is something to be said for free artistic expression, this feels like some Bill Maher-style Islamophobic shit. This day is a not happy one.

However, there is one Muhammad I'm always happy to see art of...

I'm of the opinion that "Draw Mohammad Day" would be interesting if it meant that people drew flattering pictures of the Prophet, depicting him doing admirable things, accurate to Islamic teachings, showing why there are in fact people who like him. But no, that would mean doing research and perhaps even learning to be sympathetic towards Muslims, and we can't have that, now can we? So instead we get a bunch of horrible caricatures of middle eastern people with the word "Mohammad" scrawled on them, almost as an afterthought.

The difficulty with that is that many groups of Muslims forbid making any images of living beings, especially humans, so that millions of Muslims around the world would view even a kindly-meant image of Muhammad as insulting.

Being a devil's advocate here, I would imagine that being the point for someone who wants to cast Muslims in a bad light. Saying "isn't it silly that they got upset when I drew a horrible caricature of their Prophet doing awful things?" isn't much of an argument, but "isn't it silly that they got upset when I drew a nice respectful picture of their Prophet doing nice things?" could get some traction, since "don't draw any people, nicely or otherwise" is one of the things that is interesting and unique about Islam in particular, as far as I know. However, that might be something of a Catch-22 situation, because if someone hates Islam that much, they would probably be unwilling to draw a respectful picture of Mohammad. There would have to be a perfect storm of someone being a really talented artist, being well read about the Islamic faith including its positive aspects, and still somehow being deeply Islamophobic.

"Draw Mohammad Day" is about as helpful in dealing with right wing extremists as if there was an "International 'Yes We Really do Plan to Take ALL Your Guns Away From You, by Force if Necessary' Day". You're just trying to stir the shit pot...

In other news 5/20 is both a mini Valentine's Day in China ("May 20th" and "I Love You" sound close to each other in Mandarin), and not so coincidentally my wife and I's anniversary.

Also, today is International Tea Day! Why not celebrate with a cuppa? I’ve already had two large mugs so far!
