Octopath Traveler Zero

I refuse to play games on my phone so I have no idea. The comments on the video seem to suggest it's mobile game adjacent or something like that.

According to official sources:

How does this game relate to OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent?

If you played the mobile title, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent, the game’s setup may sound a little familiar. That’s because OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is inspired by story elements and gameplay ideas from that game.

This new entry in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series has been designed as full-fledged console and PC RPG. It takes the acclaimed story from the mobile release but reworks it to add new story content and streamlines the overall story for a more compelling experience.

It features a new script with entirely new narrative elements, including new backstories for playable characters) , as well full voice acting that brings the many twists and turns home more effectively.

Similarly, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent featured battles with 8-character parties. OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 takes that idea and refines it to create even more strategically satisfying skirmishes.
So it promises to be a more intensive case of de-gachafication than just taking out the microtransactions and calling it a day. And by reputation, Champions of the Continent was already structured pretty similarly to a real video game.

The 8-player battles are giving me Suikoden 3 vibes. For a lot of people, that would be a mark in the negative column, but for me...

...maybe not so much.

The mobile game was... fine. There was still questionable "mature" elements to some of the character stories, and I didn't play for it too terribly long (maybe 1 or 2 months?).

Playing the demo for this on Switch since this comes out in a few days. It was more Octopath and seems just fine, but there are a lot of other games I'm actively playing that I want to finish before diving into this. I didn't fully finish the demo since I have the idea well enough, but unless reviews are bad or they didn't actually get rid of the gacha stuff as claimed I will pick it up later.

As someone who adores this series (and has the very unpopular opinion that the first game was better than the second) and loathes mobile games, I'll be very curious to hear impressions from folks once they dig into the full game.

They did post a preview the other day. One detail of note is that the total number of party members is about 30, from whom you can assemble a party of up to 8.

Aside from that, a fair amount can be extrapolated from the demo. I'm sorry that I have no better source of information than a Fandom wiki, but they have been compiling quite a bit of detail already, including a list of playable characters. Surprisingly, according to this, it's mostly original characters, though the eight travelers from Octopath 1 and six characters from Champions of the Continent will also appear.

Side note: I had no idea that Champions of the Continent had so many crossover characters, but I'm appreciating the sprite art they made for each of them.
