October 2022 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for October:

  • Double Kick Heroes, Sep 15-Oct 15
  • Windbound, October 1-31

  • Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
  • If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.
  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Mario Rabbids 2 on October 20th. Will probably get whatever the season pass stuff is too but waiting on some money to come through before I actually buy it. Super excited for this game, thread is here.

Since Persona 5 Royal is on Gamepass I might try that out? I definitely can't imagine having enough time to replay the entire game but am curious about what Royal added. Looks like you can preload it today and since we have a lot of space in our internet cap this month I might do that.

On Steam I'm curious about the game Flat Eye coming out on October 17th. But for the really, really bizarre reason that I happened to see this bit of concept art showing a vending machine to replace body parts. As most of you who know me are aware I would love to replace most of my body if I could so this amused me. This looks like it could be super-dark but also interesting? Fun stuff.

I'm likely to get RE8 Gold. I have not played RE8 yet, so I figured I would wait until this addition comes out.

I'm mildly interested in Gotham Knights. If the reviews are good I may pick it up. The problem for me is too many open world games (or games period) and not enough time.

Bayonetta 3 is out on October 28th. Directed by the lead designer of the cancelled Scalebound and seemingly carrying some design influences from it. Features a new playable character, the Nero to Bayonetta's Dante, named Viola, and just generally looks very fun.

At the moment, I'm getting a Mega Drive Mini 2 from Japan (although it won't get to me until early November), and my physical Shredder's Revenge is supposed to be out this month via Best Buy. That'll be it that I'm aware of, altho it's possible my Pocky & Rocky Reshrined CE will ship in October, which would be nice.

This is a month for Switch ports of games I already played/have access to on stronger platforms, but

No Man’s Sky
NIER Automata
Persona 5 Royale

Are all coming out this month, and at least one of those are probably a lot more digestible on portable. Probably the other two very much are not.

NieR Automata on Switch still baffles me. From what I hear, Nintendo's cloud gaming sucks, so that'd be a terrible way to experience it, but I can't imagine the Switch handling it well natively, either.

I will be getting P5 on Switch so I might finally play it. The Switch has become my go-to for JRPGs, since I can play them portably or between the TVs in the living room and bedroom, and they don't suffer from the awkwardness of playing on joycons that more actiony games do.

Apparently multiple reviews of the Switch port for Automata say it runs very well, that's it's a very well done port.

Well that's good news. I wonder how they did it (though the explanation probably wouldn't make much sense to me).

Gotham Knights looks pretty good but the only thing I'm likely picking up is the metroidvania 9 Years of Shadows. I've been following it for a while now.

My only complaint is that it's only on PC and Switch for now, and I do most of my gaming from my PS5, but I imagine this is a me problem than an actual problem.

The only games I've already got on my radar are Star Ocean 6 and Bayonetta 3, but neither of those are guaranteed purchases for me. I haven't played a SO since 3. This new one looks fairly Xenoblade inspired, but I don't need/want more open world RPGs right now. Bayo 3... well, I generally like the series, but I've never been as attached to it as I am to Devil May Cry. Bayonetta 2 was a system seller for me with the Wii U, but really the only thing about 3 I'm interested in is the new protagonist Viola.

Well that looks cool. I love that the premise of the opening animation is "you're a cool axe girl, now have a magical girl transformation into an even cooler axe girl". I'm not into Metroidvanias which is what this looks like but am definitely going to keep my eye on it.

Valkyrie Elysium arrives tomorrow, then at the end of the month I'm getting Bayonetta 3 and the RE Village DLC.

I too am intrigued by this, though my backlog is deep enough I probably won't get to it.

I'm interested in Bayonetta 3 but I really feel like I should play Bayos 1 and 2 first. Maybe I'll play the first one on PC and mod it to get through it quicker... But that's the one I already own on Switch! Woe, woe!

Wow, yeah, that does look super pretty. I admit I was a little disappointed that our heroine didn't get any trousers after her magical girl transformation, but by video game standards the character design still isn't all that male gaze-y.

If/when you do take the plunge, lmk how it goes with Star Ocean. It's a franchise I have a lot of fond memories for and I really want whatever this new one is to turn out to be good. But like you said, don't really have a lot of time/energy/money for an open world RPG atm.

Touhou Gouyoku Ibun is heading to Switch on the 20th after releasing on PC a year ago. It's the 17.5th series game, the decimal pointing to its spinoff nature as a collaboration with Twilight Frontier, who've developed all the preceding fighting games previously. It's a new paradigm for them just as both of the previous trilogies overhauled the formula between one another, for what is self-styled a "horizontal side-scrolling danmaku water action game", very evocatively. Official Touhou on consoles is a treat, and localized doubly so--as with much of the series, its thematics are increasingly current and relevant, this time being about fossil fuels and environmental disaster... and a Taotie with a huge spork.

9 Years of Shadows delayed until November 14th. Playable demo is up on Steam; seems like a swell time. I really like the music.
