Not to take away from Diablo or SaGa Frontier, but I just noticed the art for Sin and Punishment is fan art of the cover. It's a little difficult to find a good scan of the original artwork, but I do have a wallpaper that's decent that shows off Yasushi Suzuki's incredible art style:

Back to today's picks, Diablo is a good game that I didn't quite get into, altho my best friend at the time loved it. And I'm looking forward to trying out SaGa Frontier!

Hell yeah Diablo. Definitely one of my votes and well deserving on its place on the list. D2 will almost assuredly rank higher and while most aspects were obviously improved, there is a little something that the original had that the sequel did not that allows it to stand on its own merits.

I remember playing on my own once not too long after release and dying on some boss, losing my items. None of my friends were around to help me recover the goods, so I hopped into a chat room to ask for help. None other than Scott Sharkey jumped into my game and helped me recover my corpse, a total class act the entire time. A very good memory.

Haha, what a great story!

Diablo wasn't on my list, but I definitely remember playing it on a friend's PC during college. I don't think I ever played long enough to get to the end. Also vague memories about weird stuff involving cows?

I'm also pretty sure I played a bit of SaGa Frontier, but it was probably my first exposure to Kawazu and burned out pretty quick trying to get a handle on the mechanics.

I only played Diablo after coming from Diablo II, and I was throughly unimpressed at the time. I still can't really enjoy it that much, but mostly because you move. so. slowly! I'm not sure I ever made it much deeper than the fight against The Butcher, but one thing I did do was play most of the Diablo-inspired event that Blizzard ran inside of Diablo III, so that was at least some exposure to content from the original game.

man, diablo completely slipped my mind. i didn't play it in its day, and also came to it after 2 since i found a copy for like $6 at a gamestop or whatever. i did a few playthroughs over the span of a few years, and don't think i've played it since. it'd definitely be harder to spend hundreds of hours on than 2, but the music is fantastic and it's a nice tight little horror rpg; you're not as fast and powerful as in the later games and often end up doing the "run to the nearest door and shut it" thing, hahaha. and maybe i'm just saying this because i'm a dota fan but the butcher is blizzard's most iconic villain

i need to check out the offbrand expansion sometime. don't even know if it's good or not, don't care either

not sure i would've voted for 2 either, or if i would've even considered it to count, it feels a bit borderline although the only way i could really quantify this is by talking about the resolution

saga frontier is great of course. #6 for me, i played it last year and enjoyed the whole thing. i'm playing it again. i've said enough about it elsewhere that i don't have much to say here

yesterday's games i also haven't played. i'll have to check them out!

Diablo was in my top ten. What a game! I can remember playing it at night, in the dark, and the soundtrack and ambient effects doing a number on me. It is hard to go back to today when 2 and 3 are both right there but the soundtrack is still one of my faves. Just listen to the town theme:

A thing of beauty. The loot loop was near perfect at getting you to keep trying to find another better piece than you already had as well.

Matt Uelmen (composer for Diablo 1+2) kicks ass. Those echo-y guitar riffs from the Tristram theme send chills down my spine every time.

I love this. Never got to play the first Diablo as I was still Mac-only at that point (if it had a Mac port I'm not aware of it), but I've heard so much about it over the years.

I have heard it said that early in development, Diablo was a turn based game ala other early roguelikes that hewed closer to the original. Somewhere in development it changed into the action RPG title we know it as today. It might explain a bit of that movement jank.

Oh. Well poop, I wanted accurate box art for all the entries. Still, at least the art was cool for this one. What even does the actual OG N64 box art look like then?

I can see where that fan art was tricky; I'm just super in tune with Suzuki's artwork and noticed it right away haha

Just for posterity's sake, there are really plenty of Sin and Punishment box art scans floating about and to pick from, depending on what kind of resolution or brightness you're looking for.

Officially more popular on Talking Time than either of the Mega Man Legends games (yep, neither one placed): It's The Misadventures of Tron Bonne!

I guess it's not too surprising this game got so much traction on the list. It focuses on the most popular aspects of the MML games, after all: The Bonne family and their adorable minions, the Servbots. The game itself has a bare-bones plot which is an excuse for capers, adventures and various hijinx. The Bonnes are criminals, after all. And while it didn't the scope or RPG elements of the games from which it spun off, Misadventures did have a variety of neat playstyles, from puzzle boxes to action setpieces. All the while squeezing every last bit of charm from its cast (which has a lot of charm to go around).

I've only ever played the first Mega Man Legends, and I do plan to play the second someday. But seeing this place so high and reading up on it for the entry, I might have to add this one to the backlog as well.

When people think of crossover fighters that aren't Smash, invariably Marvel vs. Capcom is the one that comes immediately to mind. Granted, this is technically the third entry in the franchise, but it was the first to bear the name, and it expanded the Capcom side of things to include more than just Street Fighter characters. You want Megs vs. Cap? You got it. The roster for this game still looks piddly when compared with Ultimate MvC 3, but in 1998 this was a revelation.

The art direction, too, was incredible. Right out of the gate in this installment, everything is gorgeous and the frames are fluid, to where installments 10 years + down the road were only refinements of this game's visuals. It really did help set the standard for what 2D fighters should look and play like going forward. Looking at it now, it's both a nostalgic reminder of when fighters were king of the arcade, as well as a look forward at what they'd be when consoles and online gaming became the norm.

There’s a lot of games on this list that’s on my to-play list, and Misadventures of Tron Bonne is one of them. I have a copy, I just haven’t got to it yet.

My crossover capcom vote went to Xmen Vs Street Fighter. MvC is probably better, but I’m not that interested in Capcom characters outside of street fighter and I’m not that interested in Marvel characters outside of xmen, so it’s less my cup of tea.

Hell yeah MvC. I voted for this one. I have so many memories of playing this in the arcade before I really understood how to play, and MvC is the game that I eventually learned how to do the moves and perform combos in Capcom fighters! Thanks Dreamcast!

Tron Bonne made the list. I have more than a little trouble investing greatly in any Mega Man game but this is one of the few that's not a struggle at all: beautiful multi-genre mashup with a kind of reckless experimentation, innovation and diversity of presentation that's difficult to find in anything else in as potent a mix. I only recently played it and all of it was just stunning.

Marvel vs. Capcom was on my list at #15. I actually don't remember the first time I played this game, but I had some prior experience with the series due to owning the Playstation port of Marvel Super Heroes. It must have been an arcade machine somewhere. But anyway, I fell in love with it instantly once I saw you could play as Mega Man. Even though its sequels have a hugely expanded roster, there's still lots of reasons to prefer the 1st game, which is where I stand these days I think.

I don't know if I knew the first one was ported to Dreamcast until now, I only remembered playing 2 on there. But yeah, this game got my vote. I can't place if my friends and I played it on Playstation or in an arcade but we played it for sure. Not as much as 2 on the Dreamcast but a lot.

Hah, so I only had the second highest ranking for Tron Bonne (mine was at #6). Love the heck out of that game. The "Beacon Bomb", where you shoot a target at pretty much anything (a hole to explore, an enemy to attack, etc) in order to have it swarmed by adorable Servbots is just one of the most satisfying mechanics I've ever come across in a video game.

Yeah, it was either a launch title or SUPER close to a launch title for the DC. I bought it before I got the system for Christmas, lol.

Huh, genuinely surprised Mega Man Legends didn't make the list. But it appears I didn't vote for it, either. Still, happy to see some representation with Tron Bonne.

I have to admit I haven't played much of the original Marvel vs. Capcom, putting pretty much all my time into the second game.

Marvel Vs. Capcom made my list. Loved X-Men and Street Fighter Vs. X-Men but Marvel Vs. Capcom was really the icing on the cake. MvC 2 is good also but... Marrow?

MvC was my favorite of the Capcom/Marvel games until UMvC3. I like (and played a lot of) MvC2, but the cast is perhaps too big, and as a result, hella unbalanced. MvC1 has a small enough cast with a bunch of new characters (including Hiryu!), plus the crazy amounts of fan service in the assist characters (Michelle Heart from Legendary Wings? One of The Unknown Soldiers from Forgotten Worlds? It felt so crazy, and new, and fresh, and after MSH vs. SF, which felt pretty incremental after X-Men vs. SF, this was a new paradigm. So good.

Also, a few years ago, I did a deep-dive on the differences between the arcade/Dreamcast versions and the bad PS1 port:

I forgot about MML, and this game. A shame, because they are both great. The atmosphere in both games (and MML 2, I'm sure) is absolutely great. The gameplay is completely different, but the feel like the same world.
