Nier-er To Me: The Nier Thread

My favorite bit in OG Nier was some trolling Cavia/Yoko Taro did against the Trophy/Achievement culture of the time
It makes me very happy that Automata swung as far in the opposite direction as possible and once you made enough progress you could literally just buy the trophies and not have to go out of your way. And since nearly all trophy/achievement screenshots are stuck in blank loading screens, there really wasn't much to be lost there for anyone who just wants to get them without the hassle.

Am I misremembering, or isn't there an Achievement for buying an Achievement?

Endings A,B,C,D,E,G and a couple others achieved. The bullet hell truly was bullet hell. Deleted my game to save someone else at the end. I think I'm done with this game!

It was good! I'm not at all sure how it connects to the original Nier but then I don't really remember the original Nier...

It's several thousand years in the future after
Emil fights off a near-infinite alien invasion to the point that they started modeling their machine designs after him because they started thinking he was a god.
There are a couple more hooks but that's the big one the story lightly hints at and is given more context if you beat a secret boss. There's also a separate secret boss guarding an area that's just a direct callback to the original, and an off-hand comment from the shop driving around the city crater about how A2 resembles Kaine (and according to the stageplay has her memories?)

IIRC, you get some information about Project Gestalt both in 9S's route, as well as some documentation at the Replicated Library in A2's path through the Tower.

Allow me to share the most popular video I've ever posted to Youtube, which is like 90% correct in poorly explaining this timeline:

I was today years old when I found out the Japanese opening cinematic of Nier Replicant is this weightless, Kainé-less generic trailer.

And I found that out because the NieRemake opening cinematic is a shot-for-shot replica (ha) of it.

At risk of sounding melodramatic, I couldn't even finish watching it, and stopped it after about 2 minutes. It somehow makes "Song of the Ancients" sound boring. How the F do you make "Song of the Ancients" sound boring. And a Nier OP that doesn't blast you into your chair with Kainé swearing is no Nier OP to me.

Song of the Ancients can never be boring, but yeah having Kaine shouting all that stuff as the first thing definitely gave it way more impact, and it was nice to just start the game up to semi-relive that moment without having to get there again.

Also halfway through typing this I threw myself at the SE store to see if they ever restocked any of their best soundtracks lately and NOPE. I never seem to have the money when they first go up and sell out.

I mean, he did put a canon sequel to Automata as a set of optional raids in FF XIV based off of what is likely one of the joke endings.

Given what that raid seems to culminate in (the JP Nier account shared a tweet showing a Seed of Destruction holy shiiiiii~) I really can't wait to reach THAT part of FFXIV, myself.

I basically re-got into XIV for two reasons, and one of them is so I could play the Nier raids, specifically the one where you fight 9S because, and I can never stress this enough, FUCK 9S

I tried the DLC in the OG Nier, but never finished it. I forget if it was too long, too hard, or just weird that it used the kid vs the old guy that I was familiar with. Maybe I'll try it out in the new version.

It was very weird, and it definitely lived up to the "15 Nightmares" title in that the trials were tough, and had a posterized, high-contrast visual style that made them feel dreamlike and unsettling. It was just a series of combat challenges versus oversize enemies, though, and the main rewards were the Angelus-themed weapons (which, admittedly, made the base game even easier) and vague narrative about the Old World (Legion, the Books, etc.) that was stated more clearly in the artbook. From the screens above, the high-contrast style remains but without the posterized filter.

In Gestalt, the conceit was that WoRV was a dream diary from Nier's wife, recalling him as a young man. I wonder what the plot justification will be this time, for turning Bro into the rugged old man version.

I've always wanted to play Nier and never did get around to Automata. Thinking I might just play this first, after all? Or... I dunno, from what I've heard about YT he sounds like the type to twist this back around into an actual sequel to Automata despite being the first previous game, or...something.

That doesn't prevent him from adding further denouement in Nier Replicant!

This is the guy who very nearly skipped from Drakengard 2 to Drakengard 4, and would have had "figure out what happened to the missing Drak 3" as that game's premise. He's definitely not above splitting up a narrative across twothree franchises and threefour unconnected games.

I didn't mean "make a sequel to Automata," I just meant "turn the predecessor into a sequel." Which the more I think of it sounds like a kinda awesome idea and/or power move

Honestly, if Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139's Ending (Paul don't read this, Automata spoilers) E led to a pixelated zoom-out that revealed this was all a simulation happening within the Ark, as experienced by the 9S that left with the Machines, I... would probably not be surprised, but I'd still consider it hilarious.
