I also think the premise is just not supported. I can think of little in the trailers that reminded me of Deadpool.

Yeah, that's what I mean by saying I strongly disagree with everything they're saying.
(1) I don't think it looks like Deadpool.
(2) If it actually does in reality, that will make the series worse.
(3) Making it more like Deadpool would not be a sign that an adaptation can work.
Also, more generally and less directly in response to the article, (4) I think the trailers look awful, for a different set of reasons.

i guess it's possible the article is secretly good, but i'm taking the tweet you shared at face value as being representative of the article's content
this could be a mistake on my part i guess, there are lots of bad tweets misrepresenting articles... but the tweet says the article is someone's speculation based on marketing, which is not really a genre of writing that i ever read

Yeah the people making this have absolutely zero idea what they are doing
I genuinely don't understand any decision making process that leads to a live action adaptation of an anime that is advertised by showing how they recreated (poorly or not) scenes or even shots from the anime. People who watched the anime like anime and don't need a live action recreation of it. People who don't like anime are not interested in how closely the live action show matches it.
I think this is good advice in general. It’s very easy for people to jump to conclusions and make assumptions about stuff without the body of evidence to make those thoughts rational and grounded in reality.
But at the same time, we have a pretty large body of evidence at this point that Hollywood types don’t understand anime and their adaptations at the best, never quite work. So I get and am pretty empathetic to the skepticism of this.
I personally don’t care. This is mostly just a curio to me. I’m expecting it to be bad, but I’ll be happy if it isn’t. Early reviews however aren’t promising…
There's also that live action One Piece that Netflix for some reason decided was feasible to do. At the very least the recently announced cast all seem well-picked, of course there was some whining from that corner of the net about how Nami's chest isn't big enough.

At this point there are a lot of early takes from respectable media outlets releasing on the internet and the ones I've seen have been pretty luke warm at best. My hype level is waaaaaay down at this point.

I didn't know this was a thing. I need to see this, whenever it will come out. I need to see this traiwreck, because, yeah, can't imagine it to be anything else. Maybe it will be entertaining. Oh! My! God!
I took a look, and the group picture showed a real(?) reindeer, which made me love way too much. Everyone is striking a cool pose, and then you have this reindeer in the back. Oh dear, I have something to look forward to, now.
Really curious how many professional media critics who reviewed this aren't familiar with the original show.
Did anyone else watch Maya and the Three? I though it was quite good. Maybe could have been a 90 (or even 120) minute movie rather than a limited series, but it looked good and I liked it.

I think I hate every single second of this. Every line dialogue, every cut, every bit of delivery, the tone, the rhythm, just everything.
(Well, I think Shakir is doing a good Jet, but it's edited so choppily that no one really comes across well in this.)

Also this clip makes it blindingly obvious John Cho is 20 years too old for the role of Spike
The acting/actors is/are fine. The script and direction is... not great.
Cho being old is fine. Maybe even low key a strength if whoever was making this knew how to direct and harness what they've got better. Spike looks young in the show, but he gets talked about like he's been around the block for a long-ass time. Making him old and visibly weary of living is very in character. Something that Cho looks like he's bringing to the character just fine. But so far he looks like he's missing Spike's swagger and playfulness, which is a big part of who Spike is and why he's endearing and why we put up with a character who is otherwise a complete douchebag.
Shakir as Jet is about as perfect as you can get for a live action adaptation.
Faye just feels off. By a lot. I don't think that's necessarily a problem though. Faye composes herself as a classic femme fatale, but it's just a paper thin veneer for a broken, lost, little girl who is just trying desperately to keep her shit together. This Faye doesn't feel like that at all. But she still maintains the haphazard, flying-by-the-seat-of-her-pants, vulgar, live life like you aren't going to be there tomorrow, low key obnoxious characterization. And truth be told, the whole femme fatale schtick is pretty outdated and passe, it's not a bad move to pull her away from that. I just kinda can't get over the voice. Megumi Hayashibara just has an incredibly distinct voice that lends the character a gravitas and regality that this actress (and the old dub actress as well) just could never really nail down or properly emulate.

I don't blame any of them performers . I think they're probably basically doing a good job with what they've been asked to do here. I just wish they were asked to do something else, and then I wish it were shot and edited so that it felt like they were in the same room and speaking to each other. Not much an actor can do to fix what's going on here.

I... don't hate it? But it's pretty close to my "cringe" threshold.
That's actually a pretty faithful adaptation of Ed. It's just, you know, not a good fit for live action. This is always the problem with adapting cartoons to live action and following the script too closely. It's like a reverse uncanny valley, where wild crazy shit you just roll with in a cartoon, just looks wrong and fake with real people doing it to the degree that your suspension of disbelief gets shattered into a million pieces.

Agreed. I get a kind of “all according to keikaku” vibe from this approach to translating animation to live action.

Ed is definitely a damn if they did, damned if they didn't situation. I saw plenty of salt elsewhere from people speculating that Ed was going to be absent or drastically altered in some way due to her absence in promotional material.
So in the end she just wasn't in the promotional materials because everything about her was awful, I guess. Bold move, Netflix marketing department. Bold move.
I've been pretty laid back about whether this is good or bad. It just makes me want to watch the anime, really, and live-action anime adaptations have never been good before and I had maybe 5-10% confidence they could do it right here, at most. Seems so far like they did not, in fact, do it right.
