They’ve been talking about a live action Cowboy Bebop for over a decade, so I long accepted this was going to eventually happened, whether I liked it or not. This at least looks better than the Keanu Reeves movie pitch sounded.

Finally caught up on Castlevania. (Surprised we didn't have a thread for it - had to search and found out all the talk was in here.) Anyway I went back and read spoilered discussion and don't have much more to add, but I liked it. That ending was unexpectedly sweet!

I also recently watched the last season and also enjoyed it. I wasn't really feeling the preceding couple of seasons, but this felt like a return to form.

Anyone watch Kid Cosmic? The first season dropped awhile back and I quite enjoyed it, and the second one just hit last week I think? I dig its aesthetics, and while it can be a bit silly at times it's still compelling enough to watch. Even if the second season has a reeeeeeeally obvious Thanos analog, and ends with the gang heading off to Not-Avengers Tower.

Biggest complaint about season 2 is the complete side-lining of Chuck. That's inexplicable.

Love it. I wrote a post, back when season 1 dropped. The artstyle is really cool, and I love the moments, when everything works out, and we see a bunch of scenes with everyone doing cool stuff, with music added.

I don't quite understand the setup (kid isn't going to school, right?), but I love that everyone at the diner is family, no matter if blood related, or not.

I don't think we're meant to think about the minutia, a fun setting is a fun setting.

Oh and I forgot to mention, my other big gripe about the second season was Krosh's heel turn, that was such a bummer.

What this suggests to me is that they're trying to translate the aesthetic of the animation into live action as closely as they possibly can*. I'm not sure I've seen a live-action adaptation of an originally animated work take that road before. Almost everyone else ends up (for instance) putting Wolverine in black leather rather than yellow spandex. I'll be interested to see how that ends up working.

*Though the title sequence is often by far the most stylized part of a show, so I could be totally wrong.

This is a whole genre in Japan across TV, film, and theatre, although generally a very bad one. Looks like a very elaborate cosplay in still images and maybe intriguing in a well edited trailer, but the end product is typically pretty dramatically inert.

Maybe a successful example along these lines is the Wachowski's Speed Racer, although they were also very much doing their own thing.

I don't think its's reasonable to judge the show based on this clip, but just judging clip itself, this feels to me like the rote and lifeless former category. It just makes me think, "Cowboy Bebop was a good cartoon! I should watch that cartoon again instead of this uncanny valley imitation of it." Maybe they will make it work in the show itself.

Also hard to say much about this, because so much of its success or failure will hinge on how they handle more abstract sequences, which they don't show at all.

Yeah I'm a little concerned at how much it looks to just literally be translating the cartoon to live action, especially when that particular show can be taken in pretty much any direction they want without ruining it, because they can just snap back to the plot for the like 4-5 episodes where it matters. It's not something we need a second version of! Make new episodes!

Also it's really weird at the end when there's a very obvious empty space for Ed but they haven't cast that character yet.

I will be delighted if it ends up being good, though, of course. I like the casting and worst case scenario we get some great music out of it.

I haven't seen Speed Racer to have an informed opinion on it. But to me, the most successful example of these is the Takeshi Miike adaptation of Gykauten Saiban/Ace Attorney. Which honestly is a masterpiece. But that movie dared to fill in the gaps, add fidelity to the designs/world, and rewrite characters or stories to better fit the medium and build its own identity. I'd have preferred a Cowboy Bebop adaptation do the same but if this OP is any indication it lacks the imagination necessary do to that. I really hope I'm wrong though.

Based on the casting announcements, we know at least a couple of characters have had their roles drastically reinterpreted, so I find it weird they would then just turn around and slavishly recreate episodes. Also if they were just recreating episodes one to one then the opening credits basically just almost spoiled the entire first season of the new show.

I guess I'm in wait and see mode. Maybe they are just taking existing characters and remixing into new storylines. Like I could see Teddy Bomber and Mother being a single episode, where you have dual terrorist groups who can't get their ideologies out there because they are too busy feuding with each other. Would probably work better than trying to do Cowboy Andy in live action...

Yeah, one thing to keep in mind is these are gonna be in the 40 minute range, which is already divergent from an anime format, and which by necessity requires some kind of creative interpretation even if they're adapting a lot of the same episodes.

This looks much worse, because the English text in the old OP was at least treated as an aesthetic object, crafted to be visually appealing. This looks like no thought was put into it beyond, "Well, there was English writing, so let's flip that around to Japanese writing," without any attention to its composition as an image or font selection. This contributes to the general atmosphere of it feeling more like a cheap fan parody.

The issue is not the context of the text being more readable, but that it was done so sloppily relative to the source material. (Although the context of the text being more readable is another effect of the lack of care given to the design of the text...)
