Netflix: Flicks? On the Internet? That's just crazy talk!

Nice. My schedule's different these days so I"ll probably just wait 'til it officially comes out on US Netflix.

... edit .... shit, this is the Netflix thread, I thought i was in the anime thread, moving my stuff over there.

I took a look at this new anime(?), Blood of Zeus. Greek mythology is often fun. The first few seconds contained a pretty disgusting death, with the camera lingering way too much on it. Made a very grimdark first impression.

I rarely abandoned a show that fast.

I watched through the first episode;

It's much in the vein of the Castlevania animated series, but less violent and without anyone talking about having sex with goats. And also if vampires were Spiky Guys and the Monsters were all Mike Mignola monsters.

Japan’s most evil yakuza makes its cutest househusband!

Netflix continues to be fucking awful about discussing/selling their shows. But this is indeed good news.

FWIW the bolded phrase is a too direct translation of how the Japanese tagline for the comic also describes the character.

(I would probably go with something like "cold blooded" or something that sounds more natural in English to describe a mobster who does bad stuff. "Most evil" feels a bit too much like it belongs in a different genre.)

It's just really bad/lazy translating by people who clearly don't know the first thing about the subject matter.

SO EVIL

The disconnect you're identifying between how the advertising tagline describes him as an extremely bad guy and the actual material is precisely the part that predates Netflix.

The part you could accurately criticize Netflix for is not this disconnect but rather that "evil" is not the best fit for a mobster setting. But the other options would preserve this disconnect, just having that disconnect while maybe sounding more natural in English for the genre. ("Japan's most cold blooded/ruthless gangster," etc.)

I just started season 2 of Cobra Kai.

I was not in any way prepared forit to briefly become a live action Anime, and then immediately walk everything back, because this show only pitches curveballs.

I love Cobra Kai

This show is basically entirely the American Footage parts of Power Rangers except without any Moon Witch trickery.

Or rather, if Rita Repulsa was just upset at the prospect of Participation Trophies at least.

Has anyone watched BNA?

I was in an anime mood (an animood if you will) and since I liked Beastars I decided to check it out.

The good: It often looks gorgeous with some great color usage. The dub performances range from 'pretty good' to 'mostly ok'. The story gets absolutely bonkers, mostly in a good way. And it at least attempts to promote a message of diversity and acceptance of others. I'm also happy to report it is decidedly non-skeevy.

The bad(ish): My bonkers-threshold for the story was broken in the last episode, which reeeeallly went a few steps too far. Though I still enjoyed it, it often had me laughing at the absurdity, which is fine. Just be prepared for the last episode to really dial the anime nonsense up to 11. There's also some absolutely cringy terminology you'll hear throughout the series (Beastman-itis!!!). And while it certainly wants to promote a message of diversity and acceptance, the message gets muddled a bit when the main character frames her new Beastman struggles as a choice, which yeah that's factually accurate, but it's also not helped by (last episodes spoiliers) the climax involving a 'cure' for Beastmen to turn them all human, furthering the 'choice' framing. This certainly didn't ruin it for me (a cishet white guy), but ymmv.

Oh, and since I mentioned Beastars earlier, the japanese trailer for season 2 dropped a few days ago:

How long was the dub turnaround for season 1?

I have watched the first three and I am into it. I was not familiar with them before but the show kinda feels like Tim and Eric: Very Online Edition, which completely works for me.

Also I've been going "Everything's a drum! Everything's a drum!" in my head more or less non-stop since watching it.

I finished Aunty Donna last night and I already want more. Six episodes was not enough! Then I started watching Umbrella Academy because It's There, and it's fine, y'know? It's not amazing, but the story is just involved enough to keep me interested.

I finally watched Cobra Kai, and while I really liked it overall I found the second season to be a bit weaker than the first. Still really good, but the tone was more all over the place in season 2, hell the last episode alone gave me whiplash more than once.

I'm also not a fan of Tory, like at all. Not a knock against the actress, just the character archetype. Adding an obvious 'bad girl' for the Sam to butt heads with was predictable, but she was almost cartoonishly bad (and in a series with a character like Kreese that's, uh, that's something). The show tried add some depth to her in like one conversation about her past (her Mom's boss was an asshole ergo the world is unfair so better start a high school riot so you can attempt to cripple/disfigure your rival) but beyond that she's completely one-note and just not interesting. Aisha was a much better foil for Sam given their (on ice?) friendship.

Speaking of, Aisha apparently isn't going to be in Season 3 at all? Because the writers just didn't have a role for her??? What kind of weaksauce is that? There's a blatantly obvious role for her: Johnny has a crisis of faith as a result of his many, many bad decisions, Aisha is a student who he has positively affected, she sticks up for him, and maybe even helps Daniel see him in a new light.

We'll see what they do with Season 3 (and 4?), hopefully they learned the right lessons from Season 2. Though, Tory's coming back but not Aisha. So I'm a bit concerned.

Aishas perhaps the only Actually Well Adjusted character in the show, she has nowhere left for her arc to go because she is the only one who is not Fully Bugnuts About Karate

Oh hey look what's dropping on the 14th!

I was worried for a bit that Netflix had forgotten all about Hilda since it feels like it's been years since Season 1. I could use some charming animation right about now.

I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to the Further Adventures of Utterly Fearless Yorkshire Girl.

Oh my god, that's great, I adored the first season. Such a beautiful, fun show.

What's Shenmue?
Wait, Hilda is about a girl from Yorkshire who goes around investigating and befriending various local monsters?

… is this the closest we get to Bad Machinery: The Animated Series? I might have to watch this now…

I mean, kinda???

But even if not I highly recommend it anyway to anyone who finds the prospect of 'charmingly animated series that's at least reminiscent of Bad Machinery' to be appealing.

Disenchantment never quite lives up to the Simpsons and Futurama pedigree, but it’s a lot of fun and I’ll happily watch another season.

Also, it has a top notch intro.

I wouldn’t even say it’s a lot of fun, but it’s amusing enough that I don’t regret my time with it, don’t mentally lump it in with the hordes of bad original programming that Netflix is responsible for, and would get around to watching another batch of episodes of eventually.
