Might as well get the general Netflix thread going, eh? This is where to talk about overall Netflix news, as well as Netflix series that never seem to get their own thread.

Season 3 dropped today. The show is still cute and likeable, though it takes to Episode 3 to finally get to some heavy metal karaoke (though that song is an anti-capitalist rager that feels just a bit too real right now), and the season at large seems to be about Idol Culture. The way Retsuko gets wrapped up in that is, well, very Aggretsuko.

Meanwhile I'm sitting over here impatiently waiting for season 4 of The Good Place to arrive so I can finish the show. I haven't technically finished season 3 yet, but if the first two seasons are anything to go by it's going to end on a massive cliffhanger and I don't want to be left, well, hanging!

The tone is pretty strange. As an American I thought it was pretty interesting to see a show set in Scandinavia that focused so heavily on economic inequality and capitalist exploitation, and I give them points for the poor characters actually dressing like poor people compared to say, American shows where the poor characters dress like models, but at the same time I remember feeling like some of the sets felt a little too antiquated? Like I remember thinking the main character's house read more as "poor in the 90s" than "poor in 2018"?

Also like at 6 episodes it mercifully doesn't wear out its welcome the way a lot of Netflix Content does.

So the finale of Season 3 of Aggretsuko was A Thing. I don't want to spoil it, but it doesn't pull its punches and just when you're wondering if the show was actually going to address the issue of toxic fandom it totally goes there.

The season finale honestly kinda felt like a series finale. Sure a fourth season hasn't been confirmed or denied yet, and I doubt it was made with the intent of being the end, but if it turned out we aren't getting any more Aggretsuko then at least it feels like it has an ending.

Not super thrilled with every decision, of course. Haida totally should have chosen Inui. And his 'dragging Retsuko back to reality' moment was, I dunno, kinda pushy? He's not even wrong with what her issues are, but after she was assaulted he doesn't let her process it in her own time and instead pushes her to deal with it because he's worried she might move away. It's totally presenting a selfish act as a selfless one. Haida's mostly a goof who means well but I do wish the show stuck with those two just being friends instead of getting them to hook up, especially after those circumstances in the finale and after introducing a character who's actually perfect for Haida.

But regardless, dang good season. I hope we get more.

I personally feel like I've gotten to the point where there are so many streaming service options that Netflix has gotten lost in all of it. The last time I really used Netflix for me was probably whenever The Witcher came out, and even then I don't think I finished the last episode or two.

I watched the new Netflix Transformers show (War for Cybertron? Cybertron Under Siege? Taking of Cybertron 123? I can't keep track) and it was okay, but Just Okay. It took itself so seriously! Also, the fact that the robots' midsections and faces would bend and distort like flesh really weirded me out.

I just watched a Netflix Original movie The Lovebirds starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. It was quite charming and funny. I think I enjoy anything Kumail is in.

Has anyone watched Away yet?


I'm over half way through the season and I'm really digging it. It's sci-fi enough to present a believable effort at landing people on Mars, but grounded enough that the drama is really damn good and relatable. I was actually on the edge of my seat in the second episode with the whole de-tethering thing, and I can't remember the last time a Netflix show did that.

honestly i'm still kind of thinking about the Ratched promo material that referred to Nurse Ratched as being one of the most iconic villains in literary history, and it's like... is she though? i haven't watched the show yet but by all accounts it's just a mediocre AHS season (which, when you think about the general quality of AHS, that's saying A Lot)

Age of Resistance was one of my favorite things that came out last year. This really sucks. On the other hand, knowing the state of the world at the beginning of the film, maybe it's a good thing that we don't get to see what happens next...

I'm watching Hill House right now. I tried it when it first came out and wasn't super into the first episode but I'm glad I gave it a retry. I finished episode five, which is very good.

This was really enjoyable! But the thing that kept nagging me the whole time and made it feel less real was that you've got all these dudes at NASA and not once. Not once. Does anyone make a reference to Apollo 13, or even the associated movie. Everything else about it was pretty good, and with the equal focus on science-and-space and earth-and-family narratives it felt both a bit more plausible than Interstellar and maybe a bit more intimate than Gravity. (I was not a fan of Interstellar. People screwing up in space, that I can understand. An entire crew of people being complete jackasses in space? Nope! Implausible at best, insulting at worst.)

Slightly confused by the way this hasn't even reached 3 seasons before cancellation. I guess it must have been really expensive to make!

Other big point of confusion is the way the Chinese government is portrayed. Like sure, they're not really communist any more and the joke among leftists is the youth rebel movements are upset because the government isn't anything like the Maoist thought they were taught, but the quote from the man wasn't "Women hold up half the sky, so if we better not let them go off into space because it'll come crashing down due to a lack of support"
