Netflix: Flicks? On the Internet? That's just crazy talk!

Yeah, I think most people remember either the Julia version of Gomez or the Astin version, both looked far more suave and handsome than he appeared originally. Both actors also played him rather expertly and memorably so it's no wonder that's the image of live action Gomez most people think of, so Guzman will probably throw a lot of people off.

Jenna Ortega has major Christina Ricci vibes as Wednesday, though. I'm getting the sense that if this show works at all it'll be because she carried it.

Def agree about the grim violence being better as remembered and retold by the Addamses. Rare case where 'tell don't show' would work better.

I adore Luis Guzman so I'll be looking forward to him giving the roll a shot, even if it's going to *feel* weird because he doesn't look like the Gomez I'm used to. I'm much more concerned with him getting the personality down and pulling off Gomez Addams's weird and raw sexual charisma.

New Wednesday trailer, now with 100% more Fester and 100% less castration!

A fine trade-off!

Also that was the 90s Wednesday, Christina Ricci, at the end wasn't it?

That Scott Pilgrim animated series is coming in November and has a new trailer:

If nothing else it looks pretty slick and faithful to the comic designs. But it's still weird as heck that the entire movie cast is back to voice this though, right? Like, either there was a clause in their original contracts about a future animated work or every one of them just so happened to be free when this was in production and I'm not sure which one is more unlikely.

Yeah, still would have prefer a new cast/interpretation of the material just for the sake of it.

At least it looks like it isn't just "the movie cast but 'more faithful to the book'". Looks like it's taking a page from the beat em up and including some mob fight scenes.

I wished I still loved Scott Pilgrim as much as I did over ten years ago, but the comic doesn't really work for me anymore. It's such an early 20s series.

Still, seeing this makes me happy.

Voice over work is a lot more adaptable/malleable to actors schedules. It’s not like a film where you have to set aside a huge block of time to be physically present at the same time as everyone else during a specific production window and you can’t do any other work at the same time. You rarely have to even interface with other actors. You can go into a recording studio by yourself and bang out all your lines in a few days with the ADR team if need be, and that can be done at several points along the production schedule (the animation doesn’t even have to be finished; they can record off of work prints or even just storyboards). Animation as a medium managed to thrive during The Pandemic because they could just ship recording equipment to actors homes and have them do their lines remotely. So the logistics of getting the old actors back isn’t the hurdle here, the hurdle would be putting together the money to afford them all. Which with Netflix funding things isn’t much of a hurdle either.

I was satisfied with most of the original actors, but I maintain that Michael Cera was badly miscast. I feel like the Scott of the books has a kind of charisma that's exactly skin deep: it's obvious to adults and to his close friends that he's an aimless jerk, but you'd probably like him if you only talked to him for ten minutes (or if you were a kid yourself). Michael Cera's version of Scott was a creepy loser right on the surface, with no particular heart of gold underneath. I saw no reason for Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Ramona to take any interest in him.

The weird thing about watching that trailer is that because the original comic was so heavily based on a certain manga/anime style, I kind of feel like I've already seen it.

Excitement rises. I liked what little we see of Garp and Mihawk. Especially the latter is, at least from his look, perfectly cast.

I will have a good time withthis, one way or the other. But it looks like it got the feel right, so I'm way more excited than I probably should be.

I love that Luffy actor.

I suddenly feel excited. Hmm, maybe it's time to rewatch the cartoon. But it looks fine, for a live-adaptation, at least at first glance. The Kioshi-warriors look great.

That trailer gave me the fanboy tingles. I think it's been literal years since a trailer has given me an ASMR response? I guess I'm officially excited!

Avatar is nice, but I'm not nearly as excited with that as I am for HOT PILGRIM FINALLY COMING BACKKK

I guess I just don't understand the larger cultural urge to take something that works in animation and try to recapture it in live action

I do... but more of a "how would this work?" more than "I need this story again in live action." And even then, it would be about trying to overcome the challenge of making wild visuals work in live action and therefore push possibilities rather than "here's a ugly dirt brown look for the Lion King with different movie stars. BTW, this screws over the original animators."

I honestly don't understand why I'm excited. I would never ask for this, as the Avatar cartoon is so incredibly good. There is no need for this, at all. But seeing it makes me want to see more, for whatever reason.

It's probably a combination of wanting to rewatch the cartoon, and seeing the differences.

A small part of our minds feels live action makes it more tangible/real. It's a powerful urge. Like owning a replica Master Sword or Hylian Shield.

I don’t care that it’s live action, more so that it’s a re-interpretation of the show

However, making live-action media into cartoons is interesting and fun, because you get to see what creators emphasize to convey character.
