My PS4 has turned against me.

I was watching a movie on my PS4 tonight which played fine, but suddenly started stuttering and freezing during the post-credits. (Yeah yeah it was a Marvel movie. Surprise!) Thinking there might be a hair or something on the disc, I ejected it, and was horrified to find a ring of dozens of scratches all around the middle of the disc. This is a blu-ray which I bought new and have taken very good care of, and I know it didn't have this damage before tonight. I checked the last disc I had in my PS4 before this, and noticed the same pattern beginning to form on it, though to a lesser degree. My PS4 has somehow become a disc shredder.

That this had to have started happening around the time of the apparent lightning strike that messed up all my Comcast shit a few days ago (and which has caused numerous small electrical oddities across the rest of the house which I am still discovering) has not escaped my notice, but so far defies rational explanation. Conclusion: lightning ghosts, also known as boltergeists

Has this or anything similar happened to anyone else? I got it in early 2018 so there's no way it's still under warranty. Is there a fix, or should I start looking for a replacement? It seems deeply silly to buy a new PS4 when its successor has been out for a year and a half already, but I don't see myself being able to acquire a PS5 anytime soon, and the PS4 is my only blu-ray player. But I may as well look at all options, so if anyone has acquired a PS5 and is therefore looking to get rid of their (gently used, NON-HAUNTED) PS4, let me know how much you'd want for it. Thanks.

I just realized I probably should have posted this in the hardware failure thread. Sorry! Forgot we had one.

The fact that it might shred more discs presents an extra problem to troubleshoot. My first suggestion would be to try it in different outlets around the house and see if it still happens. But uh... I don't know how to do that with discs you won't care about but that you could also still tell it was scratching up.

If you're worried about your electrical system being borked, get some surge protectors asap so you'll prevent/stop dmg on your stuff as much as possible. Something probably got borked with the disk drive itself during the electrical surge is my guess. Also disk drives in general will tend to have gears or whatnot wear out over years and years of use as well, it might just be the PS4's time. But yeah, surge protectors -- very useful!

The obvious answer is lightning ghosts, also known as boltergeists. Trust your instincts!

I knew it!! ⚡ 👻

Anyway, I've decided it's foolish to spend money on a second PS4, and have instead decided to join the hunt for a PS5. Wish me luck!

That was easy. I'm choosing to credit this victory to the power of complaining about something on Talking Time.

Thanks friends!

I started following @Wario64 and @PS5StockAlerts on Twitter, and they pointed me to a queue at PlayStation Direct. (There was one yesterday as well, but I got home after it closed.) Fifteen minutes of waiting in the queue and I was in! They were out of just the console itself and only had Forbidden West bundles left, but that was fine by me.

Glad you got a PS5! Wanted to say that if you are still wanting a PS4 for some reason that I had good luck with Sony's official repair service. $99 and they'll fix practically anything wrong with your console. When I got mine back they even included a steel case copy of the latest MLB The Show game as thanks for using the service. Pretty fast too!
