Move over Smash, I main Reptar now! Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

I wonder just how deep this well of fighters and stages will run.

Like, you have many beloved, or at the very least tolerated, Nickelodeon animated series to draw from.

But then you also have an ill-advised Jimmy Neutron spinoff where Princess Oom, a creepy two-faced pedophilic alien princess stalker with a giant tongue, is regularly licking one of Jimmy's best friends.

Will they pretend that Planet Sheen never happened like many Jimmy Neutron fans would want them to, or will they acknowledge its existence?

You don't play as OPM. OPM with his bad sense of direction gets lost on the way to the fight. The time limit is how long before OPM finally arrives and instantly defeats the bad guy. The bad guy has to beat the other good guy before that happens. The other good guy has to hold out until OPM arrives or actually win on their own before then.

Catdog and April O'Neal confirmed

gotta say, the past 48 hours have been rather impressive in terms of the number of games that april has been revealed to be playable in. (at the rate, she'll be in dozens of games by the end of the year!)

This is out now!

I have played through the arcade mode a couple of times. It feels like the Dracula X to Smash Bros' Rondo of Blood. That's not great! I mean... it doesn't seem wholly bad, but there is definitely some kind of polish or "feel" missing, which makes every whiff that actually is bad so much worse. As an example, the stage "Space Madness" is kind of a "pokefloats" style scrolling stage, but it either moves too fast, or the platforms fall too quickly, or something that makes the stage feel vaguely unplayable. I can't put my finger on it, but Nick All Star Brawl feels more like a game that would be a quick, cute rental than something I could play for generations like Smash.

Only played like a half hour! Opinions may change!

How's the readability? When I watched the Ren and Stimpy trailer I couldn't parse what was going on at all

I don't know if says more about how much polish goes into Smash or the sorry state of its clone, but this still looks like a step above virtually every other Smash game that isn't Smash.

Does it have any items? Guessing no since I haven't seen any footage of any.

Game feels fun to play, has some critical differences from Smash. Had fun mashing with Korra, and then did a training mode mirror match with April O'Neil, and she has recovery for days.

Fucking hell, Aang, Korra, and Toph are in this game? Why was I not informed?

(Okay I still probably won't actually be getting it, but damn, it just got way more interesting for me.)

Watching some gameplay of this and, well, it sure looks like a sequel to Slap City (which seems perfectly fine).

Yeah from everything I've heard this is basically Slap City Spongebob Squarepants edition

It looks like exactly the game a group of melee obsessives with a relatively small budget would make for good and ill.

Ooblina zones me out so hard. Reptar seems to kick ass, too.
I should probably not be playing arcade on hard mode.

I think they said voices might come as DLC?

But yeah, that was my biggest beef with their kart racers, too.

Huh, you'd think getting cartoon voice actors in would be half the draw of a project like this...

Yeah, I imagine the budget proposal for a ton of established voice actors to do like two minutes each is a pretty hard sell. I can’t imagine Billy West and Jim Cummings come cheap.

Less understandable is the lack of palette swaps. What the fudge?

They could always just get Eric Bauza to voice Stimpy. Even without that asshole John K.'s involvement I seriously doubt West would ever return to the role(s) that initially made him a star.

Find a replacement for Jim Cummings too 'cuz fuck Jim Cummings.

Almost assuredly down to Nickelodeon not wanting its characters to appear in an official product looking anything but on-brand. Approval rights would likely nix anything like that for a sufficiently controlling licenseholder.

Yeah, most likely. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something that just didn’t come up until the project had already started. Seems like something any fighting game developer would beg for.

The whole project seems like a huge labor of love for the developers and just another license dump for Nickelodeon. Here’s hoping it does well enough. I don’t have any plans to buy it 😬

You'd think alternate outfits would be an option since most of the cast has had 'em but then again this is very much a budget game. No doubt the devs want to make something really amazing (You think they wanted only one of the AAAHH!!! Real Monsters in there?) but Nick just wants another thing to put some extra money in their coffers and the arrow landed on "Smash Clone" that week.

You'd still have to pay them for using their voice, even if it is existing clips. Their agents will definitely fight them for the rights to use their voice, even if the actors themselves aren't doing any new work.

I have a friend who's a big Smash guy (his office has had daily tournaments for YEARS now) so he's playing this and he keeps showing me stuff and I can't get over how strange this game looks in action. It's just so stilted and WEIRD, and the generic music and completely silent characters and fucked animations make it feel like a weird Mugen fan game take on Smash, not an actual full fledged released official honest to goodness game. You know?

It's wild it even exists to me. They made a Smash clone for hardcore Smash nerds, that's aimed at kids with a bunch of kid show characters, but then cut every corner possible and made it cheap as hell, with multimillion dollar franchise characters from a billion dollar company. ...like...what? It's all so so strange. Like some sorta cursed wish on a Monkey's Paw situation

I could see that, though I imagine a lot of them have at least ONE alternate color that's been used in licensed product.

Ren & Stimpy? Fire Dogs.

TMNT? Action figure colors.

Just off the top of my head.

Some of these characters essentially had no toy presence. Also fire dogs would be more an alt costume and this game looks budget as hell, I can see not wanting to have a case of "some characters have alt costumes, some do not." Inconsistency would likely be seen as worse than "no one gets one" to many teams.
