MiSTer: the thread of cycle accuracy

I agree, save states are a welcome addition. It really gives the best of both worlds.

Oh, I'm also going to take the time to mention that playing Turbo Duo games on the MiSTer is a fantastic experience. On top of running through Double Dragon II, I also ripped through Exile and Exile II (via the UnWorked patch, not going through beating the WD version again) and had a blast.

Yeah, save states will be a great addition. I don't have time to git gud any more

Stupid question of the week - why aren't Pokémon Gold and Silver reading the time? I have a real time clock board, even, and it doesn't seem to do anything to the game (I can see it's working on the main settings, though)

It's not even about gitting gud, honestly. I often want to capture a full game for a video, but as an adult with a wife and a job, I don't always have time to sit down and finish something like Mega Man 3 or Bionic Commando in one sitting. Having an Everdrive with save states has really helped on that front.

Does the RTC board actually work as a time server, or just to tell games that you have a clock? I don’t know if it has nvram to save the current time, or if the cores can be programmed to reference it.

It keeps time, even if the MiSTer is unplugged. The Game Boy core on the Github says it supports it, so I'm wondering if it's a script I don't have enabled or something.

Based upon this GitHub issue it looks like it's not actually supported in the main line GB/GBC release yet. It appears you can probably grab a branch release in which it's been implemented based upon the discussion here. That same thread indicates the GBA core does fully support it, so maybe if you load up Gold and Silver in the GBA core instead of the GB core it might work? To be honest, I'm not sure that's even possible currently. I've only ever loaded GameBoy games on their native hardware core.

I don't think the GBA core supports GB/GBC games at all but then in retrospect, I've never tried to load one either.

Great stuff, thanks. Guess it means no Dark or Ghost types this playthrough...

Edit: that last post looks like it might be live. I'll have to update and try.

Edit 2: it is live! Best. Timing. Ever.

Today's Jotego Patreon cores are Street Fighter Alpha 3, Shadow Over Mystara, 1944: The Loop Master, and Janpai Puzzle Choko.

Jotego dropped The Speed Rumbler yesterday for anyone (meh), but also Progear and Ecofighters for Patreon folks.

Progear is pretty sweet. I played through it last year and had a lot of fun with it, and I'm a sucker for that sort of setting.

Also, I noticed that an Atari 7800 core has dropped. Anyone have any recommendations for good games for the system? It's definitely one I skipped right over (and a lot of other people did, too).

Sarge, I don't know if it's good but there is Dark Chambers which is like a proto-Gauntlet.

Ooh, now that does sound interesting. I will definitely give it a whirl.

@ShakeWell: I've always heard about Ninja Golf, but never played it. Reckon I don't have much of an excuse now!

My 128MB RAM stick from the Porkchop Express arrived today (guess the check really was in the mail) so before I get ass-deep in RE8, I might just give RING OF DESTRUCTION a run-through tonight.

Nice! I got my 128MB stick from him as well, and it works great, passing all the memory tests, including jotego's. Can't complain about that at all.

Anyone here need a 32MB RAM stick? I assume no, but I'll send it to someone for the cost of shipping if you need it. (It will run most cores, a very few Neo-Geo and GBA games won't run, and most CPS2 games won't run.)

Nobody ever talks about that game, I'd be fascinated to hear your thoughts on it.

I came in 2nd in a MAGFest tournament for it once! It's good! I don't think I like it as much as Muscle Bomber Duo, but the combination of straight-up 2D fighting and wrestling is a good one, and I honestly ADORE the different rings for each character.

That's similar to my thoughts - it's not the sequel I wanted as it dropped the "wrestling game but with special moves" feel of the originals for something more conventional but I really enjoy it and it's a desperate shame that the series isn't better loved.

Even though I'm on Jotego's patreon, I never installed any of his beta releases, because I thought I'd have to track down the specific roms every time, and that's work. I just found out that the update_all script doesn't care about any of that, so if you just copy the MRA and RBF files into the _Arcade directory, update_all will parse it and get the stuff you need. Very handy!

My Patreon's switching from mainly Podcasts/Youtube creators over to MiSTer people. I've now got 5 people either directly writing cores/software or contributing by decapping chips (jotego, sorgelig, furrtek, Robert Peip (Wonderswan), and the PSX project). Anyone else active that I should look into?

Maybe nullobject if you're into shooters? He did the DoDonPachi core and has been adding support for other Cave shooters in the beta build.

For some reason, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme just started running through my head. Has to be happenstance, right? ;)

Apparently some stuff behind the scenes on the PlayStation core that have led to Laxer3A leaving the project. Sad to see, and I hope he does a bit better after taking a bit of a hiatus.

Very cool stuff! Also, I noticed that there were a few folks talking about getting involved on the PSX core, so even if he and Ultra are taking a break, the core may be in good hands (Robert Peip/FPGAzumSpass says he may look at it after Wonderswan).
