I always thought Spazer was a weird sort of mistranslation in the same name as Varia and Barrier, and it was meant to be 'Spacer'. (in that it spaces the beam out)

Maybe because "spaz" isn't a particularly pleasant word?
Exactly this. Even with mostly similar languages, some words can be considered far more offensive than others. This is exactly why America and the U.K. started receiving separate English localizations for many Nintendo games.

Is it an issue with the written spelling? Because I wouldn't pronounce "Spazer" anywhere near the same way the other word in question, to the point I don't see how one could mistake one word for the other during spoken conversation.

I think it's likely they just thought "spazer" sounded silly as a mashup of "spaced lazer" (and maybe too close to "phaser," which was probably the original intent) and renamed it accordingly.

I would've called it "Tri Beam" instead of "Wide Beam" though.

I've been taking my time with this so I'm only a few hours in, but I like how utterly devoid of personality and affect Adam is. It serves the atmosphere well, in that the only thing on Samus' side here is this cold, emotionless robovoice, but it retroactively makes Fusion kind of funny if you think about it.

SAMUS: Wow, this completely flavorless text-to-speech program really reminds me of my old CO!
ADAM: ...

I'm have a grand time with it thus far, though I'm wondering how close to the end I am? I just defrosted Artaria and am heading back to find something or other.

You're about 3/4 of the way through or so.

Why are there loading screens?

It's actually loading a large chunk of the area your in, as opposed to just the immediate room. The obvious reason is for keeping track of where the EMMI is as it goes about it business, but it has other effects too, like if you try to escape an enemy with a projectile attack by moving into the next room, they can still shoot at you through the door.

There are loading screens because there's data that needs to be loaded. A lot of room transitions can happen without a noticeable loading screen because the rooms in question have most or all of their data in common so there's nothing to load. I think that many cutscenes are also secretly masking load times.

It's not terribly different from the elevator rides from previous games. Are there any natural transitions, though, or are the maps complete distinct? I can't recall any off the top of my head.

No natural transitions I've found. Just the various transit options you find.

And yeah, loading screens generally mean...loading. Each area is large but self-contained, and there's a lot to each. I'm not sure why there wouldn't be loading screens.

One thing I really, really like: no directions. I got tired of the "go here to find thing you need" map icons in the last few games.

Fyonn

did their best!
I was mostly thinking of the screens between zones.
As far as I can tell, the entirety of every area is loaded into memory at a time. Based on enemy behaviors when re-entering a room, all the enemies in an area might be active, or active within a certain range of adjacent rooms. EMMIs are definitely constantly active, but also the reason EMMI doors become briefly impassable once leaving them is almost certainly to reset the EMMI to a neutral position and search status.

It's opposite of Metroid Prime's choice to make the player sometimes wait on doors - fluidity of navigation and movement was clearly a priority, so having a system that gave you big loading screens so actual gameplay could always be a seamless 60 frames per second makes sense to me.

They are very long loading screens, though.

This is a great game and Samus is an absolute joy to control. Only had to look up a couple of the Shinespark puzzles, otherwise was able to figure them out myself.

The further I get into the game, the more I'm impressed. Even with some EMMI frustrations (which, I mean, they're fine, and its exhilarating to pull off a close escape, making up for it), the game keeps giving me new tools and tricks, and I'm here for it.

Beat this. Final time: 8:32:32 with 68%

The final plot twists are really hilarious imho. Truly, Samus is the galaxy's greatest daddy's girl (by number of dads).

Astonishingly solid game. Much better than all the aimless noodling the series was doing after Prime/Fusion.

I'm just glad Metroid is finally the main character.

So. I straight up hate this game.
This EMMI stuff is so capricious and shitty, i fucking loathe it.
But even without, it's based on the foundation of Samus Returns, which at best is tremendously disappointing. The most fun I had is the brief period where I knew the EMMIs were disabled, but you still have to contend with the busy, and nonsensical maps, obnoxious common encounters, and the exploration/upgrade system all being lock and key, as opposed to cool ways to use new powers. Remember using ice beam to freeze guys to climb to higher levels? Well here, have fire tree doors. Everything is a door. Charge, missile, grappling, wide, plasma, super missile, ice missile. Even cloak and shift are most commonly used for doors. it's unbelievable.

Anyway - at the last (?) emmi, which is purple. Got killed about 400trillion times on my lunch break in the shitty water emmi zone.

Just finished it with 100% of the items. This game whips ass and tops Super Metroid for me.
