Looks like another Mercury Stream game. I was a little mixed on Samus Returns, but I'm still looking forward to seeing Metroid finally move beyond Fusion.

The little teaser in one of the pirate logs in Metroid Prime 3 is finally paying off!

Hopefully the melee counter from Samus Returns that's in that trailer is toned down... I hated that game.

Still, this looks cool from what they've shown, that aside!

I have no confidence in Mercury Steam as shepherds for this or any other vintage series they've previously been involved with, but with Dread they have such a strong, survival horror-tinged concept to build around that potentially there will be more of interest here than in Samus Returns. Gotta spin this however I can.

Same. I hope they turn it around for Dread...

  • Mercury Steam are apparently co-developers with Sakamoto and the Nintendo team.
  • Metroid Dread will feature "refinements" of the free aim and melee counter abilities introduced in Samus Returns--in particular, you can do a melee counter while moving, and at will rather than reactively. It looks like they're incentivizing the counter by making enemies killed with a counter drop more items, rather than requiring a counter in order to defeat enemies. The Treehouse person giving the demo says that the new melee counter "doesn't break momentum," and that "instead of having to stand still and wait for enemies to attack you, you can just go get them," so it sounds like they've heard some of the criticisms of Samus Returns.
  • The game will be built around a mechanic that looks like an unscripted expansion of the SA-X hiding and escape sequences from Metroid Fusion.
  • According to Sakamoto, Metroid Dread will be the final chapter of the story arc of Samus's relationship with the Metroids.

I ALSO don't trust Mercury Steam, but if Nintendo is still involved...and basically everything Owl just said fixes my biggest issues with Samus Returns completely...

So...I dunno? Willing to be cautiously optimistic here

"doesn't break momentum" was the main issue I had with Samus Returns (besides it being ugly, which this very much is not), so I am now Cautiously Optimistic as well

I had a lot of fun with Samus Returns (but I get why people might not like it as much). Looks fun to me.

Just some poster
Samus Returns was alright, so I am not overly concerned with MercurySteam's involvement here. I will say that I wasn't a fan of the counter mechanic in SR, so I am not particularly thrilled to have that back, but whatever.

"Since you blew up our Metroid breeding and research station we figured the only guys who have Metroids anymore are the pirates, so we built these awesome Metroid-hunting robots so we don't have to count on you, personally, stopping the space pirates every time."
"Whoops, you're part Metroid now, aren't you? Ha ha ha, silly us. Anyway, about that breeding and research station..."

This game has been on every one of my Nintendo Direct bingo cards, but as a joke. Can't believe they're actually doing it.

I'm glad they found a third option between "Samus is stuck in the ugly Fusion Suit forever" and "back in the Varia Suit like nothing happened." The color scheme is a little Captain America (Uncle Sam...us?) but overall it's pretty fresh. I'll be there day 1.

I am willing to bet that the suit is an in-progress replacement for her mostly fucked up Power Suit due to Fusion, and most of the upgrades in the game are about building proper functionality into it with the help of that Chozo riding shotgun and/or leveraging her Metroid abilities beyond being able to eat X.

I beg your pardon?!

Yeah, my biggest gripe with Samus Returns wasn’t even that countering existed, but rather it was too important, so keeping it but dialing it back sounds aces.

Didn’t they also say that the Prime series is basically a separate continuity diverging from the original game around when Prime 3 came out?
I don't know about that, but it's also increasingly hard to divorce it from the events of the original set as Metroid 1/Zero Mission sort of work on the assumption that it's Samus' first solo outing.

All the Prime games are conveniently contained in an arbitrarily long period of time between Metroids 1 and 2, thus ensuring that Tanabe and Sakamoto never have to talk with each other about Metroid lore.
