I'm going to try not to be pessimistic - I've seen enough revivals go awry to get too pumped up these days. Still, seeing Mega Man come back is absolutely a good thing.

I'm open to it being X-cellent, but I it will probably end up being merely good. I'm fine with that.

It looks like Mega Man 11. I didn't like Mega Man 11. But it's certainly possible that I was wrong. And, indeed, likely, given the general state of me and my posts. Also hullo everyone, it has been a while. I looked at some of my old contributions here and had to be physically sick, so I genuinely apologise for how appalling I often was. Anyway, yes, Mega Man. Could be good.

1. they announced it so early to get hype for their Robot Master design contest.
2. It looks bad because this is extremely early. I would guesstimate MAXIMUM 2 months of work so far. Don't waste energy critiquing what's there cause none of it's staying!

There's a lot I didn't care for in MM11 - difficulty, voice work, the fucking gear system - but I'm just happy someone at Capcom apparently thought, "Oh, that's right. Mega Man. Let's do one of those again."

Now, if it was Mega Man X9, I'd be beside myself.

I liked MM11, but not as much as I wished I did. It had a lot of flaws that have only become more obvious with hindsight, but it did do a lot of things that I liked as well. I liked the visuals and the overall game feel, it's the most comfortable runny-jumpy-shooty in a non-X Mega Man game beyond the NES and NES-styled games. But the individual Robot Master stages were at least 25% too long and it had no actual endgame to speak of. Two Wily stages, then the refights and final boss. It's probably the most slight endgame since the first Mega Man, honestly.

The Double Gear system never felt very comfortable to use, and was mostly 'here's the mode you have to go into for this one stage gimmick/boss phase', but honestly the worst sin of the Double Gear system is that they didn't use it to give us a Double Gear-powered battle with Bass. There were only two proper Wily stages for crying out loud, they could have had Bass be the boss of a third one! It was right there and they just left that on the table!

But I've long hoped for a Mega Man 12 that took the same visual style and gameplay as 11 and just polished it up, and hopefully that's what this is? The fact that they're calling it 'Dual Override' and not '12' is a weird twist because it looks like 12 in all but name, but we'll see what they have up their sleeve. I just hope they learned the right lessons from 11.

I didn't care for the Double Gear system myself, so the fact this is sporting that "Dual Override" subtitle tells me there's probably a similar gimmick. Like you say, hopefully they learned some lessons.

I thought MM11 was pretty good on my first playthrough, and it felt a lot better once I learned the stages and how to use the power gear (it's absolutely busted I love it).

If MM12 here ends up with a stronger aesthetic/soundtrack, better-paced stages, and a bit more ambition in terms of content, then I'll be really happy.

Not even. I don't think Bass has ever been a proper stage-end boss after the MM7 intro stage, just a mid-stage boss.

Just smack a room somewhere in there, and you're set.

The soundtrack was a big disappointment to me for MM11.

I need some chiptunes in my Mega Man games.

Been on a huge Mega Man kick as of late. The new game announcement is definitely exciting, though it is the fanworks that always have me checking back in, hoping to be just a bit closer to the release of another cool game. Shattered Diamond in particular I am looking forward to, and I know I would just jump right into a patch for the X5 and X6 enhancement hacks by acediez despite playing through those games so recently.

That's already 2/3rds of Mega Man 7's gestation!

I'm glad they've stopped releasing these things too early

So many good designs. It sucks that a lot of this stuff will be on social media sites where it will get harder and harder to find in the future, would be cool to have a site hosting everything like a robot museum.
