Gamestop even took my money for Mega Man Mania and then had to refund it once the game was cancelled.

Yeah, they were supposed to have the five Game Boy games in color. As far as I can recall, it was never officially cancelled, just kind of quietly never spoken of again.

Rumor is they lost the source code.

What gets me is that in all the years since, no one has made it themselves. Not Capcom, not fans, no one.

It is very odd that they show a few stages from the first two games with a full Link's Awakening DX ground-up colorization, while the rest of the cuts (including other places in the first two games) just have that Super Game Boy "one palette for all sprites, one palette for background" look.

This thread has me curious so I went ahead and started playing the GB Mega Man games. These are pretty solid! Especially Mega Man 5. I do wish I could find a way to disable the slowdown, though, because damn.

I could probably make a strong argument for 9 being the best Mega Man, it'd be exciting to get it on its spiritual home.

Someone ported (one stage of) Mega Man 9 to the NES using the MMC5 mapper chip. Free download on Itch.io, haven't loaded it onto my Everdrive yet, but I'm told it does work.

I finally put this on my Everdrive. It's just Galaxy Man's stage, without the boss fight, but yeah, it works. It's MM9 on NES. Pretty neat, I kinda hope someone else picks it up and ports the full game.

I listened to the Mega Man ranking episode of Retronauts over the last few nights, and was definitely intrigued at the spread of takes on the series. Except, of course, with MM2 and MM3 coming out on top at #1 and #2, respectively. I put Mega Man 9 right there with those games, even if it exhibits that sort of Inti Creates hatefulness they like to dabble in. I'd love to see a full port to NES as well.

Samesies. I was also surprised at how low Rockman & Forte ranked. It's not great, but I honestly found it pretty novel when played as Bass. (Also, fuck the final stage/boss.)

Rockman & Forte is extremely hateful and frankly not very fun most of the time. Mega Man 9 is the supreme Megaman game

I'm biased on this having played the Game Boy Advance version, but it's got a sadism about it that stops it being as fun as it should be. And I played as Bass, heaven knows how bad it is as Mega Man.

I think it's tough (and as others say, a bit hateful), but I still like it. I mean, I basically like most Mega Man games, at least when it comes to the mainline games. I'm not surprised that MM11 went as low as it did, but I also apparently didn't hate it when I finished it (contrary to what my early experience tells me), giving it an 8/10.

I think my lowest-ranked games are going to be MM10, MM1, and MM7 taking my bottom spot. But even that I consider good, just not ideal. I have mad respect for the original game, especially in the context of what third-party developers were producing at the time.

Before I throw down any more verbiage, might be easier to just do this:

MM2 > MM3 = MM9 > MM5 > MM4 = MM6 > MM8 > MM&B = MM11 > MM10 > MM1 > MM7

Some of these separations are tight enough that you could ask me on a different day and I'd have a different answer. For instance, the gap between MM2 and MM3 has really narrowed for me over the years (not enough to displace), and I appreciate the other NES charge shot games a lot more, with them really closing the gap on MM5 (which indeed is pretty breezy because of how ridiculous the charge shot is there).

I love - goddamn love - Mega Man 1. I wouldn't put in the top slot, but top 5? Almost definitely.

Mega Man 3 will also edge out Mega Man 2 for me due to nostalgia: I have some precious memories tied up in Mega Man 3 that don't really exist for Mega Man 2, despite how good MM2 is mechanically. I have no interest in attempting to view these games "objectively", so I'm content to let nostalgia work its magic.

I went back about a year ago and played Mega Man 11. I have a higher opinion of it now than when it released. I still don't like the gear system at all, the stages are too long, and the "normal" difficulty was so bullshitty I had to drop it, but it's a pretty solid game.

Honestly, the more I think about it, though, I may have put MM1 too low. I mean, that's the problem I have with the series (a good one to have!): many of them are downright great, it's just that some look bad compared to each other. Compared to most series, they're almost always in the upper-tier conversation. I can absolutely see the argument for it making top 5, especially since it was pre-charge shot, which fundamentally altered the series in ways both good and bad.

(Ha, to confirm, I looked up what I rated it on replay last year. Gave it a 7.5 (very good), almost considered giving it an 8. That tells you how tight my bounds are on this series. Mega Man 7 came in at 7/10 when I finally finished it in 2019. I use 5/10 as average.)

Mega Man 8 is actually one of the best ones and it is the children who are wrong.

I listened to that podcast too, and I was happy that there was almost always someone who said what I was thinking. Glad to have Nadia out there both defending MM11 and taking MM9 down a peg.
