Mass Effect General Thread: This is My Favorite Thread on Talking Time

WhatCulture may have broken the big news

I just want to clarify that the source here is a widely reported on tweet from a week before the WhatCulture story in which Jeff Grub at Venturebeat passes on a rumor. WhatCulture has not broken any news here. I am not familiar with WhatCulture, but at first glance it appears to be a content mill and not somewhere to find original reporting.

I only ever played through the trilogy once but had a grand time with it, and got super attached to the characters. The Citadel DLC for ME3 where you're just gathering all your friends to hang out one last time is exactly the kind of content I wish more character-focused games would have -- forget the epic space battles for a bit, let me just get to better know these people I've spent dozens of hours with, and have some fun with them. I think I wouldn't mind coming back for a second helping. Maybe I'll play Renegade this time! (No I won't.)

You're right, my wording was shoddy. My OP has been changed to reflect your correction.

I want to replay this, but I am not sure what choices I'd do differently. Garrus is mine and no one else may have him!

Time has been kind to the infamous ending of Mass Effect 3. Yes, it was really stupid, but with the benefit of hindsight it's easier to see that the series was always a bit stupid, and that's okay.

I'll pick up a remaster if it adds gyro aiming or revamps ME1's combat

i did think it was stupendously obvious by the end of 2 that the trilogy was going to end with some kind of a deus ex machina. if you want an exciting, constantly escalating ride, you're gonna have to make the tradeoff somewhere. it was fine. i still think 2 was the most fun though.

i need to play andromeda sometime. not just because it's named after (and takes place in?) the galaxy, although mood, but because i told a friend i would

I think the doofy ending would have been less awful if the climax leading up to it weren't so... plain. There's a good deal content leftover in the game's files which imply that the big climax was going to play out more like ME2's suicide mission rather a generic horde mode battle.

Heck yeah! I read people's rants about the end of the series, and I'm like: did you guys all fight the same giant terminator that I did? I think the first two games did such a good job of establishing the setting and making everything feel cool that a lot of people didn't notice how silly everything is.

I hope people approach Andromeda with the right expectations. It's kind of a janky, bloated game, and the story doesn't even make all that much sense. It's super fun to play though, and it has tons of cool ideas throughout. I have a soft spot for it, and it got way more hate than it deserves. just give it a shot & keep an open mind.

Mass Effect is a series I always really wanted to like, and could never actually get there. I have too many quibbles with how the games play, and the meta-plot is just, as you say Bongo, real dumbo. I think one of my biggest failures though is playing through the game as a boyshep, when I probably would have enjoyed things a lot better as a grillshep. It doesn't help either that the Dragon Age games are right over there and do everything I wanted the ME games to do but didn't.

I liked Andromeda well enough. Replayed it last year. Prefer a corridor shooter to its open worlds but its extremely fun to bounce around with your sorcerous space powers. There's something a little sad and wistful about finishing a big "new" RPG and being bumped back to before its ending for more DLC adventures with friends, either long since produced or, in the case of Andromeda, never released.

Anyway, my favorite character was the murderous anti-angara AI. Oh and the main villain is cute. Reminds me of like... a manul. Just a furious being but so adorable.

That's interesting WH. I'm kind of the opposite. Prefer Mass Effect with one big exception - Dragon Age has much better gay content. One reason Dragon Age II is one of my favorite games.

I'm still up in the air on this, really excited to see what they change or add but oh man I just don't have time to replay all three of these.

I stalled out on my ME2 replay a couple years ago, and have still never played 3, so I'm looking forward to this.

There aren’t a ton of Sci Fi settings that I like as much as Mass Effect. I might replay the whole thing.

Oh, and I saw that the developers are hinting that the new Mass Effect may tie in to Andromeda somehow. I would love to see that story get some kind of continuation.

If they graft the Mass Effect 3 combat or better into 2 and 1 then I'll be all over this. The original and sequel are painful to fight in now.

And I'm boring and would romance Garrus again despite options.

I do not think that's the plan and it would be a particularly radical change for 1, but I haven't been following this closely. I think they're all perfectly fun to play but that's certainly subjective. One thing sticks out for me - ME2 gave the Vanguard their awesome signature charge but unfortunately it's pretty glitchy and often requires resets... maybe they'll fix that. (have no reason to think so)

Truth is it'd probably be worth it if all the port does is just makes them all run well and look a little nicer on modern hardware. I played them for the characters and story beyond any of the actual gameplay. Especially 2 and... yes, 3. I -liked- 3 a lot. It was a weird club to be in.

With all that said... RETCON PARTS OF TWO BEYOND ALL REASON AND GIVE ME MORE LEGION. I DON'T CARE HOW.

From what they've been saying, there aren't going to be any changes that big. These are remasters, not remakes. I'm thinking something similar to Ocarina on 3ds.

Even across multiple replays, I've never strayed from my comfortable standard, a mostly-paragon lady Shepard who romances Thane, passes as many persuasion checks as possible, and never passes up an opportunity to antagonize The Illusive Man. Doing it this way just feels right to me. If I were to diverge from it, I'd want to come up with a silly and specific plan, like arranging the incredibly rare circumstances where Miranda doesn't survive, or seeing all of the replacement characters.

Want this a lot. Have no news. Do suddenly want to buy a Playstation 5 for "targeted enhancements" even though for all I know this will run worse on that for some reason. Would it be possible for me to get a PS5 at MSRP by mid-May? Don't know. Can't say I really deserve one.

I guess a trailer dropped on this, a day I was arbitrarily thinking about it. Maybe the release date is new? I don't know,

I think I got ME2 free in one of those PS Plus monthly releases? At any rate I'd like to play the series at one point but the fan backlash to ME3 spoiled me on everything going on in that game and the "40 DLC!" from the trailer is more intimidating than alluring.
