Show made one huge mistake regarding canon though, his name is Baby Yoda, not Grogu
Whenever I think of that name, I think of the thing the Orcs drink in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings saga...or at least in the EU version of it (Middle Earth: Shadow of games).

Some genuine appreciation for the show in a non-star wars fan base capacity; this shows got some exceptionally directed action scenes, even in excess of the movies (which presumably have a much higher budget and more time to shoot them.)

This episodes climax cut between a very Star Wars-y lightsaber fight between Ashoka and Bad Imperial Lady, and a regular, low key and tense Western Showdown between Mando and her head of security. I can’t remember seeing anything like that before and I loved it

It was really, really Kurosawa in points. Which is energy I absolutely want in Star Wars. I also like the fact that Beskar steel is lightsaber proof, which opens up the door to some interesting new fights

It also had a return of the phrase “enemy sorcerers” in the recap.

Enemy Sorcerers is one of those terms that just stimulates the pleasure zone of your brain.

Certainly the best episode so far this season. Further evidence that Disney should just put Dave Filoni in charge of Star Wars already.

I enjoyed it. And I really like Baby Yoda's name. It sounds like
Gurgle
, which feels appropriate. It's a great Star Wars-y name.

I've been reading Film Crit Hulk's write ups, and he's really annoyed that the show leans way too hard into references to other shows, and that it has kind of weak writing. I can't disagree with any of his criticisms, but in this case I really don't care about the show's flaws. it's just a fun, escapist adventure story. I'm happy with a bunch of fun action scenes and cool visuals that are only loosely strung together.

The show is pretty much a continuation of the other cartoon series, so those references make sense, and I think the show does an okay job of filling in enough of the important details so you can still follow the current episode's plot, but when it comes to this episode, there's a lot of history that is only alluded to.
When Ahsoka told Din that maybe another Jedi will find them after going to the temple, my husband (who has not really followed Clone Wars/Rebels at all) said "Why do they need to find another Jedi? There's a Jedi right here!" and I had to explain that she was Anakin's apprentice, and that's why she refused to train Grogu. The reasoning was clear if you knew, but wasn't made very clear for more casual fans/new people.

Within the episode she at least alludes to her relationship with Anakin -- something like "I saw what can happen when Jedi form strong attachments" -- but nothing outright states she's talking about Anakin.

The logistics of a single story wall being useful in an age where people can travel at the speed of light is dubious at best, but I am a big proponent of toppling evil magistrates in any setting.

Just watched the new episode. Holy Boba Fett, Batman!

I wonder how the season is going to end now. They are setting up a kind of prison break for Grogu but I wonder if we'll actually see whomever he reached out to on the rock. I'm not sure how I feel about introducing yet another Jedi - Luke? Ezra? - but it'd be an interesting cliffhanger..

I was dreading the return of mr milk tea but that worked pretty well. I’m still rooting for Baby Yoda to go full darkside, but I know that will never happen in a Disney property.

The replacement they casted for the Jedi in question looks so like the character it's disturbing.

I'm disappointed we never got to see the Dark Troopers in actual action. So far, all they did was march slowly to snatch a weakened Grogu up and fly off. I kinda wanted to see how "tough" they really are in battle.

But hey, seems Boba got out of that Sarlaac pit. Almost makes me want to know how he got out and lost his armor.

I don't even think they even showed who Moff Gideon's master is but if I had to guess it's shadow Palpatine...Hopefully not and it's someone else.

That said, having Moff Gideon become a Sith master via Grogu...I wouldn't mind if he became the primary antagonist for the rest of the series future.

The Krayt Dragon was in an old Sarlacc pit. I'm guessing it ate something that didn't agree with it. If Jawas found an unconscious Boba Fett in a bombed out Sarlacc you know they're stealing that armour.

Of course. But the question imo is less how he was separated from his armor, and how he stayed separated from it for so many years. You'd think for Boba Fett, getting his armor back from a group of Jawas would be child's play. Same with a random sheriff in the middle of nowhere with no backup, of whom he definitely knew had his armor.

I am legitimately upset that they blew up the Razor Crest, I love that ship.

As for the armor, maybe it wasn't important enough for Boba to challenge the marshal for the armor so long as he knew where he could find it.

I'd guess Thrawn is Gideon's master. You don't drop a name like that and leave it hanging. If the show goes on long enough I'm betting that Thrawn, Ahsoka, Gideon, Ezra and Mando will all converge. Probably Bo-Katan and Sabine too, in the long run. The arc of this show looks to be basically how Mando gets caught up in various hanging threads from Rebels.

Or maybe he was still recovering from being eaten alive. That’s the kind of thing that probably sticks with you.

Colour me legit shocked that Boba Fett was actually a badass. I foresee that as ever being a possibility

I'm not convinced Thrawn is Gideon's master. Possibly, sure, but to me that entire scene with Ahsoka set up a possible Ahsoka show or one-shot season, like they're doing with Obi-wan. It doesn't read to me like something that will be explored in The Mandalorian, unless Gideon meets an end and the show needs another Big Bad to step up.

I think Boba didn't know where it was. Strains credulity a bit if Tatooine is as small as the show makes it seem (three outposts closely spaced) but I wonder how long it's been since he escaped.

I don't think Gideon works for Thrawn. Gideon has a really small operation (one small cruiser, no Star Destroyers, based around Navarro) and if anything, Thrawn will be the Big Bad after he's gone.

I'm honestly hoping the show doesn't last beyond too many antagonists or major story arcs. I think, for as much good will as this show has going, the best thing they could do is not drag it out. Thrawn would be a little shark-jumping for me. Boba Fett's murking of a legion of Stormtroopers this ep was pretty close on its own.

A casual audience probably has no idea who Thrawn is (or that Ahsoka is in other shows, for that matter) so I'm not sure how shark-jumpy it would be. Guess it all depends on execution. It does feel like The Mandalorian has maybe three or four seasons of content; not sure where else they'd go with the character and it feel likes like the Baby Yoda quest has to end at some point relatively soon. I know they're doing a Lone Wolf and Cub kinda thing; there's an end to that road. I just hope Disney knows when and how to end it, and not let it overstay its welcome.

Anyway, looking forward to next Friday!

The non-Mando-original stuff is very not aimed for a casual audience! Almost every episode (in S2 particularly) pulls in something from another series or an older movie or something. So either they're going to leave it behind or lean into it, and I don't see why you bother casting all these people if you're not going to lean into it.
