Low-key Loki spoiler thread

karzac

Figured it might be easier to just have a spoiler thread for Loki than to talk about it in the main MCU thread. Plus, I wanted to use the title.

Anyway, I thought this episode was okay. I think both actors have really good chemistry together, but the script felt a little stiff and jumpy - like it wasn't always clear why the conversation was moving from topic to topic.

Also, was it just mean, or did the green screen backgrounds look really bad?

I don’t know if the sfx were bad or if Tom Hiddleston is maybe just not that great at reacting to things that aren’t there but that last big action scene felt really dumb to me.

Otherwise enjoyed the chemistry and his goofy ass run/multiple over exaggerated knife brandishings.

As I mentioned in the Marvel thread:
But I saw something pointed out elsewhere and now I cannot believe I missed it: Loki totally palmed one of the Infinity Stones from the TVA. Gauranteed. Specifically, a Time Stone. Just look at the way he stopped that falling tower with a rather shocking new ability that the show almost tried to gloss over. The tower wasn't just lifted back up, its time was reversed. Also, I'm pretty sure the desk where those stones were being kept was destroyed by that Hunter when she tried to apprehend Loki, and if he baited that shot on purpose then no one would know he took one. Kind of like how Sylvie was hiding in apocalypses, like if her presence can't be verified if everything is destroyed and thus fell under the TVA's notice, Loki taking a Time Stone wouldn't be noticed if their container was vaporized.

This might turn out to be bunk, but if true then this show is much more clever and sneaky than I gave it credit for, which would be absolutely on brand.
I'm still thinking this will be true.

I'm increasingly convinced that between the fact that Sylvie strongly objects to be called both "A Loki" and "Variant", I'm thinking she's going to wind up being the original version, and the Time Keepers decided to make Hiddleston the Canon Loki (for lack of a better term) after the fact

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
This makes sense because I was like "huh?" It also means Loki had a way out from early on and just wanted to measure up Sylvie or or convince her to join him

BTW, my current working theory about the Time Keepers is that they are three evil Lokis. Like maybe one Loki ended up fighting with alternate reality Lokis with Infinity Stones, fucked up the timelines and decided to have an immutable one either out of guilt or power madness or both.

Also, I'm hoping they die by getting smashed with a jet ski.

Mobius riding a jet ski and going "Whooo!" with his arms up in the air while Loki sits behind him trying to both steer and hold on to him, as they launch off a ramp and fall on top of the boat where the Time Keepers are making their escape.

Fyi, I tagged this as the spoiler thread specifically so people wouldn't have to use spoiler tags.

The pacing of this show is, ahem, chaotic. Sometimes a lot of things happen all at once, sometimes it feels like it's dithering and wasting time on scenes that have long since made their point/expressed their theme. So I'm caught between the intrigue of where this is all going, doubt that it will all be developed appropriately within just 6 episodes (of varying length), and impatience.

So yeah it's definitely MCU Doctor Who.

I mentioned it elsewhere, but I'm disappointed that the big bad branching of the timeline that was the cliffhanger of ep 2 and a major background element of 3 has just... been dealt with, all but immediately, and without much of a mention (if at all). I honestly thought it would have greater impact and consequences beyond "minor distraction for a failed plot".

Oh dip!

Old and Kid Loki!

And also… Black Loki, who is not from the comics to my knowledge.

The opening few minutes did a very good job of establishing that the TVA are the shows villains, in case it wasn’t obvious by now

Agreed.

It’s fine. I’m enjoying it. Husband called it the TV equivalent of the meeting that could’ve been an email and I think I agree. It feels like they’re batting around big ideas that they’re too scared to actually play with.

Though it also feels comic book-y in a way that the movies don’t, which is really all I ask of these shows.

When they were having the BIG FIGHT against OBVIOUS REAL BADGUY in the TIMEKEEPERS KICK ASS RUMPUS ROOM, I kept going "Why do they attacking eachother with the pointy ends of the dipshit cop batons, when the Glowy ends are an immediately one hit kill?"

So Imagine my surprise when it turned out the pointy end is the one that could actually kill someone.

It is extremely comic book stupid that the bored middle managers and dickhead cop brigade decided that the best way to remove someone from the timeline was to teleport them to a mid-00s metal album cover where they can team up with their buddies.

Instead of

you know

Shooting them with a gun so they die.

Also REAAAALY could have done without the implications of "I WOULD FUCK ME SO HARD."

That just makes them Dumber!

Final note: The Timekeepers moving like Disney Darkride Animatronics was a really nice touch. That kinda jerky, stiff movement that the planners then exaggerated in an attempt to distract from the fact that they're bolted to their chairs? That was a nice touch. I appreciated that.

Fuck Disney though.

It's so weird, they really shouldn't have done that. The obvious, lamp-shaded idea being that Loki is such a gigantic narcissist that of course he would be attracted to himself. But the underwritten subtext being that Loki - like a lot of narcissists - actually hate themselves, so him growing to care for this doppleganger of himself is like, meaningful character growth for the man on his road to redemption. You can't love others before you can love yourself, yadda yadda. But the problem is, this is basically incest and I don't want to think about that please, icky gross Disney people.
