Ava and Sara are a lot of fun. Sara has been dead multiple times, and for a while becomes kind of a devil may care thrillseeker who is banging her way through historical ladies. Ava is incredibly uptight, being actually a clone programmed for specific tasks and is very concerned with rules and protocol. So one is all "no rules" and the other is all "no! rules." but they make it work.

I remain convinced that Demon Girl Next Door started life as a hurt/comfort fic for Madoka Magica before getting the serial numbers filed off. It's a very sweet, very funny story that occasionally alludes to a much darker setting.

Honestly, the number of franchises that started as something else fanfic is staggering nowadays (that's a good thing). Just the number of things that obviously began as Draco/Harry or Draco/Ginny... man.

Neither of these two is The Thin Man

Fandom: The Thin Man
Relationship type: mr-and-ms-detective, canon
AO3 Factor: 18

Nick and Nora might not be the only couple from books (and successful film adaptations) in this list, but you can make an argument they are the most influential. Plenty of famous couples can trace back their inspiration to this, the archetypal bantering husband-and-wife crime fighting duo.
Nick and Nora are a creation by Dashiell Hammet for his novel “The Thin Man”. Instead of grim protagonist and a even grimmer setting, “The Thin Man” is more of a comedy, with a retired detective married to a rich heiress taking the place of the hard-boiled PI. Instead of your usual protagonist drinking whisky from his flask and firing from his hip, we have a reluctant Nick solving the murder of the titular victim while Nora, amateur sleuth, provides support and insights. Many martinis get drink.

What makes them so popular and their relationship so good? They have fun being together. They play, they flirt, they banter, you can tell they love each other. There’s no drama, no resentment, no will-they-wont-they nor storm clouds in the horizon - just a couple being together and staying together. Their relationship is not the source of the drama - is it a source of lightness in what otherwise would be drab murder mysteries.

When “The Thin Man” was adapted to the big screen, actors William Powell and Myrna Loy really brought the chemistry to life, giving birth to a successful franchise that still echoes today. If you see a couple bickering on screen while solving crimes, odds are they are inspired by Nick and Nora.
uc
While having common hobbies - like trading barbs or socially acceptable alcohol poisoning - is nice, you need a more solid groundwork for a relationship to go beyond the novelty phase. You need to share passion for something; for example, solving gruesome murders.

I probably should point out the dragon is not their son

Fandom: Disc World
Relationship type: love-all-the-way-down, canon
AO3 Factor: 227

Sam Vymes is the Commander of the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels. He first appears in the novel “Guards! Guards!”, and in that book he has to consult local authority in dragons (and richest woman in the city) Lady Sybil Deidre Olgivanna Ramkin. They meet, they fall in love with each other, they marry and they go on to star (or cameo) in a couple dozen books, more or less.

What makes them interesting is that they are opposites - born in complete extremes of the social scale, he’s more of a cynic and gruff character while she’s compassionate and can charm anybody - yet they somehow work. And while they have their tensions - in particular, Vymes just won’t stop working - it’s clear that they really, really love each other in a love that literally transcends time.

It also helps that this is Terry Pratchett, and he could write. Here, an excerpt from “Guards! Guards!” that Torzelbaum forwarded to me:

She smiled at him. And then it arose and struck Vimes that, in her own special category, she was quite beautiful; this was the category of all the women, in his entire life, who had ever thought he was worth smiling at. She couldn’t do worse, but then, he couldn’t do better. So maybe it balanced out. She wasn’t getting any younger but then, who was? And she had style and money and common-sense and self-assurance and all the things that he didn’t, and she had opened her heart, and if you let her she could engulf you; the woman was a city. And eventually, under siege, you did what Ankh-Morpork had always done – unbar the gates, let the conquerors in, and make them your own.

Yep, Vymes was doomed from the start.

It’s interesting to note that, as you can infer from the excerpt, Vymes and Sybil is a late romance - she gives birth to their son when she’s 46. A rare example of a late romance in shipping.

Happy-ish endings

Fandom: Lost
Relationship type: poligonal-collapse, canon
AO3 Factor: 299
Should I be worried? The AO3 factor was 300 last sunday when I checked it for the first time. A ship where fanworks disappear mysteriously? Very on-brand for Lost.

Anyway, I must say I never was much of a fan of Lost, because Abram’s black box model has always irked me past the first episode of anything he does (yes, I hated on Abrams before it was cool to do so! I’m a trendsetter!) But at least Lost had some competent show-runners besides Abrams, so late seasons had some emotional payoffs, and this is one of them.

(yes, I sporadically hate-watched Lost. I was also a trend-setter on curmudgeonly criticism!)

The good thing I can say about this ship is that, while it was a bit annoying how blatantly they kept the love polygon trying to be a thing (you know, these two plus Racer X and The Wasp) this is the one vertex that worked. Sawyer always rubbed me wrong, but they do sell the transformation from the roguish loner anti-social self.hating archetype into someone who cares. And then there’s Juliet, a late addition to the show who apparenly was added just to stirr the stablished love-triangle into a square, but who good good character developement and who is a tragic figure until the end. Somehow they bring the best out of each other - Sawyer starts opening up, she starts trusting after a life of abuse - up to the final conclusion of their relationship.

No, I won’t spoil it here. I suffered through Lost begrudgingly, so will you.

uc
Love is like a black box - you know where it starts and you think where it’s going to end up, but in reality you’re just making it all up as you go along. Sometimes that’s a good thing, other times you’re J.J. Abrams.

Oh, there was?!?!

Oh well, not much to say here. I mean, the game never really goes there, but it is heavily implied. Both Kojima and the actors have joked (!?!?!) about it. They stay together through thick and thin, from their very embarrassing first encounter (how much of a dweeb can you be, Otacon?) to their very las appearance, where it’s implied these two will be together until Solid’s final day.

Does that meet the minimum? What, you need a thousand words more?

Fandom: Howl’s Moving Castle
Relationship type: a-kind-of-magic, canon
AO3 Factor: 425

I must admit I’m familiar with this ship from Miyazaki’s movie adaptation, which is a good movie but apparently deviates a lot from the book other than Howl’s personality (apparently for contractual reasons).

Howl’s personality surely is something, though. He appears like a whimsical mage but, really, he’s mostly a powerful mage with the personality of a child with commitment issues desperately in need of some growing up. Luckily for him he meets Sophie, a girl with self-esteem issuesn who is much more mature and centered than what she should be at her age. When a rival witch curses Sophie with the body of an old woman, Sophie runs away in search of a cure and runs into Howl’s moving castle, where magic happens. Literally and figuratively.

And honestly these two are like jelly and peanut butter because they go so well together - they compliment each other. Sophie’s presence makes Howl finally find an anchor to deal with his flightiness, while Sophie starts finding wonder everywhere - not just in magic but in the simplest things, and finally starts believing in herself. It helps that Sophie is a very kind and generous soul, with enough patience to withstand and soother Howl’s tantrums.

Eventually, and several hair color changes from Howl later, the curse is broken and they pull a Squall and Rinoa and live happily ever after.

I understand the Sophie in the book is even more bossy and assertive, and is also a sorceress (something that is hinted several times in the movie but never addressed). I think I need to bump those books up the queue.

Be kind, rewind

Fandom: Video Girl Ai
Relationship type: happy-manic-analog-girl, canon

I did a double take when I was checking the AO3 factor of this ship - and a triple and a fourth because I couldnt’t believe this couple had zero fanworks there. But then again, it makes sense, since the manga and OVA are a product of its time and, boy, it was a long time ago. It starts in a video rental store, of all places. For VHS tapes.

….

You know, VHS?

They looked like this?

VHS-Video-Tape-Top-Flat.jpg

… never mind, This took place in prehistory, OK? After dinosaurs, but before the Internet existed. Yes, that old. And being an old ship, no wonder they have no presence in AO3, which is relatively modern.

No, no way I’m braving ff.net’s UI to find their fics there.

Anyway.

Yota, heart-broken because of an unrequited crush, unknowingly wanders into a magical video rental store (think like Netflix, but instead of downloading media you take an Amiibo home) that rents Video Girls - magical girls who step out of the VHS tape (the amiibo) and help you overcome your broken heart. Yota takes the tape home but his VHS player (his JoyCon) is broken, so when he plays the tape (swipes the Amiibo in the reader) Ai Amano, the videogirl assigned to him, is born with a critical defect - she has emotions (like, if your Mario ghost really really liked you). So while she helps Yota go for his crush, she can’t help but fall in love with him.

Why they work? Yota is a loser, but is a very kind, gentle-hearted loser, and Ai notices that immediately - and in fact uses that to help Yota’s crush fall for him. She’s also, well, a magical girl, who continuously taunts him and teases him and manages to bring him out of his shell - sounds a bit cliche, but this is one of those defining works.

Eventually, plot happens. The rental store and the videogirls are not what they appear, and Yota eventually has to face supernatural forces to bring Ai back home. The kid grows a spine, and it happens because he falls in love with the girl who brought the best out of him.

The manga *and* the anime end a bit ambiguously, but there’s a sequel/epilogue in the manga that assures us that these two have a happy ending. It just takes a lot of effort from them to get there.

No word about a happy ending for the demigod who worked at the Videogirl rental store, though. I hope he landed on his feet after the meteor that wiped VHS from the face of the earth hit.

Generally in Miyazaki films if there is a romance angle it tends to be very underplayed, but it is pretty cool that when he did take a stab at an overt romance, he nailed it.

AO3 Factor: 11

So, Show By Rock!! (exclamation signs must be included, according to product guidelines) is an anime based on a mobile rhythm game co-developed by Sanrio and published by Square Enix. That’s a quite a cocktail. Did I mention that everybody is a cute animal-person?

There have been several seasons of the anime, but cat-girl Mashima Himeko and fox-girl Howan are protagonists of the third season - Howan’s a country girl who dreams of becoming a famous rock star. She manages to get a spot for a big audition but loses her audition pass after she’s traveled to the big city to attend, but that’s when fate intervenes and meets guitarist Himeko, who invites her to join her band. And down that road love and stardom await.

Q3 puts it succinctly:

A country fox and a city cat, aspiring musicians both, happen to meet just when they need each other most. They make beautiful music together, and then they make beautiful music together.

That’s fate for you.

Wall-E/Eve

You know how hard is to google to find an image of these two among the hundred of damned Funko Pop hits?

Fandom: Wall-E
Relationship type: EPA-approved, canon
AO3 Factor: 20

In paper, the relationship between Wall-E and Eve should be as heartwarming as the relationship between a Roomba and an iPod, but it works. This is Pixar firing in all cylinders - they dedicate a lot of time making you get to know Wall-E so when Eve shows up you already have fallen for him.

But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Wall-E is the last janitor robot in an Earth long-abandoned and left for dead. While he compacts trash by day, we are shown he has hobbies and dreams at night. He has a cockroach buddy/pet, likes to collect knick-knacks and watch romantic movies. And yes, he yearns for love.

Enter Eve. A sleek and cool explorer robot sent to Earth to look for signs of life. Wall-E is instantly mesmerized by her and while Eve is annoyed at first by him, eventually he wins her over and is able to show her his world. And when Eve shuts down as part of her programming, Wall-E keeps her safe,

And then Eve wakes up and has to go back to her home planet and Wall-E comes along, and their roles reverse, with Eve having to keep him safe. And then, when the chips are down and Eve is in danger of being permanently shut down, they keep each other safe.

It’s a traditional love story, and this is why it works. Remove all the sci-fi trappings (which are very fine sci-fi trappings, don’t get me wrong) and we get the classical story of a romance between two people from the opposite sides of the track - the low class, hard-working but pure-hearted blue-collar and the high class, intellectual and high-brow but fun-loving researcher. They meet each other, fall in love with each other’s world and each other, and stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of everything.

Simple, effective. It works. Even between a Roomba and an iPod.

uc
You don’t have to be eloquent or super-handsome to have a chance in love - just be yourself. Although being the last being in the planet and not needing to breathe in the vacuum of space certainly help.

Wall-E almost made my own list. Humans will ship anything, I guess!

Show By Rock!! is an interesting series, one of the Sanrio (Hello Kitty) franchises that's aimed more at adults. It tries to have a little something for everyone - i.e. mostly cute girls and hot guys, and when they're feeling especially bold hot girls and cute guys. Lots of entirely subtextual or one-sided relationships, though, which is why it was a very pleasant surprise when they handed one of the anime seasons to a new staff and I guess let them do whatever they wanted. "Their songs are all sappy J-rock love ballads? Naturally. Their friends tease them for being an overly lovey dovey couple? Sure, it's entertainment. They move in together? Yeah, makes sense in this economy. Say they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together? Yes, yes, in case you haven't noticed the executives are too busy rolling gacha to complain."

Love at the end of the world

Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s mask
Relationship type: childhood-friends-with-creepy-masks, canon
AO3 Factor: 43

Oh, man, this is a poignant story, made even more special by the fact that, as with most things in Majora’s Mask, is completely optional and you can miss it altogether.

So, Anju and Kaifei are childhood sweethearts who promised to get married by exchanging masks at the Carnival of Time. However, as with most things in Termina, Skull Kid happened. A few days before the wedding, he cursed Kaifei into a child’s body and Kaifei, ashamed, ran away and got his betrothal mask stolen by thieves and he doesn’t have the courage to return to the town. Meanwhile Anju thinks his fiancee has changed his mind (and her mother’s insinuations that Kaifei ran away with Anju’s best friend doesn’t help). So we have two broken-hearted people and a world about to end in three days.

But by finishing a really long sidequest, you can untangle the mess and bring them together. You can’t break the curse, but you can help solve their problems - you can deliver a message to Anju to let her know Kaifei is OK, and help him retrieve his lost mask. You then bring them together at Anju’s inn, where, even with the curse unbroken, even with the moon literally coming down on them, they exchange vows.

So there they are, two persons in love, at the literal end of their last day, waiting for the world to end, but together, at long last.

And then you resetted the timeline just to get another heart container. You monster.

uc
Communication is key to every relationship. If your fiancee ever gets cursed into a child and then has his mask stolen by a bandit, wouldn’t you want to know instead of having to resort to a complete stranger deciding not to stop the moon from falling? Thought so.

Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Relationship type: properly-english, canon
AO3 Factor: 163
This is a ship (and fandom!) I was completely unaware of, so I asked Rascally Badger to explain it to me, and I’m sharing his explanation with you all:

Lord Peter Wimsey is kind of the original English gentleman detective. He is an idle aristocrat who solves crimes simply for his own amusement, in stories initially set between World Wars. Harriet Vane is a college educated mystery writer who finds herself accused of murdering her lover by methods she researched for her writing. As he clears of suspicion of murder on that occasion, and a couple of others, the two form a romantic relationship, though she refuses to marry him for a long time.

Peter is purposefully superficial and gives off the appearance of being a fool, despite actually being very intelligent and observant. Harriet is an intelligent, serious, and modern (for the time setting) woman who initially finds this foppish lord equally amusing and annoying. Eventually, they form a relationship that, described quickly, sounds a little like the sitcom set up of fun!dad/ killjoy!mom, but they are more balanced than that. Especially because after her initial appearance when Harriet Vane shows up in a Wimsey mystery, she tends to take it over, becoming more than just another suspect or ally of the detective, but a full co-protagonist -- and in Gaudy Night actually the protagonist with Wimsey as a supporting character to her. Plus they have a wonderful repartee, with Wimsey saying outlandish things, which sound fake but which he actually really means, and Vane shooting him down and keeping him on task, while slowly coming to realize his affection is more than just another passing fancy of an idle Lord dilettante.

Sounds delightful! But he didn’t mention the most important lesson from these books - so successful they have been adapted into TV, movies and plays, all of them leaving the most important aspect intact:

Cynical but charming

Fandom: Dance Til Tomorrow
Relationship type: they-do-and-a-lot, canon
AO3 Factor: 0
This is another fandom I wasn’t familiar with at all - but I, ahem, acquired some issues of this 1990 manga and managed to read a few of them until time pressed me to skip to the ending. Yes, I spoiled myself.

That panel? Not from the ending.

This series is an adult comedy/drama - it sets very adult situations but relies on a sense of humor that almost borders the absurd. It’s like an R-Rated Maison Ikkoku, almost - for example, one of the characters is a foreigner who always greets people by yelling “Pussy!” because Anju told her that’s how people greet each other in Japan.

Ah, yes, Anju. She’s the tsundere to Suekichi’s adorable loser. During his grandfather’s funeral he mets Anju and, in a lapse that involved lots of alcohol, gets, ah, involved with her. And then things get more complicated when he finds out his grandfather left him a sizeable inheritance he can only receive after he’s married - and Anju knows. What follows is a on-off dance between Anju and Suekichi, lots of misunderstandings and plenty of ridiculous situations. There’s a ghost at one point.

What I did like about the manga is that it doesn’t shy away from, well, adult life. We have explicit sex, persons doing what they have to do to make ends meet, emotional consequences and lots more. It does feel a bit jarring having a healthy dose of cynicism mixed with comedy, but what I read so far really holds up. Characters feel like real people, more than manga protagonists. And they are charming and do love each other, eventually, in their own way.

Warning:
uc
While getting an inheritance looks like a recipe for true love, you have to take into consideration that there’s a scarcity of wealthy grandfathers - so better to designate this as "Plan B".

Love means never having to say ‘I’m sorry I missed’

Fandom: Mr. and Ms. Smith
Relationship type: kiss-kiss-bang-bang, canon
AO3 Factor: 21
What is love? Books and movies have tried to answer this question for years, with different answers. This movie is the hollywood-action-movie answer to that question - love is what makes you stand under a shower of bullets and return fire.

John and Jane are hired killers for rival organizations - but they don’t know that. They met when they were both undercover, and they fell in love and married without revealing their secret life to each other. All that secrecy takes its toll, so their marriage is on the rocks - and then they get assigned the same hit and meet each other in the field.

And then they try to kill each other.

Until they don’t.

See, turns out they really love each other. While they are understandably mad at each other at first for hiding their double life, once the chips are down they are willing to forgive and move on. They stop trying to kill each other and they stand up to their respective organizations and action-movie their way out. And now that the secrets are out, they love each other more than ever; it helps that they both find their field persona incredibly hot (which is arguably why the fell in love with each other in the first place).

The charming thing about this couple is that this is a nice story about how a) secrets kill a relationship and b) being who we really are is for the best to keep love alive. It’s also nice that the movie centered in a married couple instead of new lovers, since keeping a marriage alive can take as much work as getting to that marriage in the first place, and that’s a lesson Hollywood often forgets.

Also people die by the dozen in this movie but, hey, Hollywood action movie and they were probably not nice people, what with being assassins and all. But if dead bodies were a valid metric for love, this is proof that these two are up to their necks in love.

uc
Practical gifts can help a lot in a relationship - bulletproof vests and top of the line weapons for your assassin spouse, for example. This movie can give you lots of inspiration on what to get for that special black-ops operative who sniped your heart.
