then Hope tries to fight it solo, and it lastsjust long enough for you to think you have to beat a viciously powerful boss with just One Sad Lad, before Pals appear out of nowhere to help you fight it.

I really like this moment. It worked for me as a cap piece to Snow's big turning point and it's very rousing too. Hope's dad is great as well. I like how the game lets him grieve and recognize how Hope has grown and supporting him in that. It's a refreshing deception of a dad.

The story is pretty straight forward for the most part. I only started to have trouble following at the last quarter, or so. But in general, people completely overstate the complexity, and how essential the compendium is.

The exciting tale of “Hopes Dad is Surprisingly even keeled about how his weekend has gone” concludes with a few dozen PSICOM soldiers exploding his door off and trying to murder his son in front of him, and then the party beating the crap out of an airship. Furthermore, unlike real Nazis, PSICOM is apparently capable of having a total change of heart about their whole... thing... when Snow asks them if he looks like someone who would ruin lives and destroy society.

Thankfully, they haven’t seen any of the cutscenes up to now, or that wouldn’t have worked.

And the game finally caught up with Sazh and Vanille, who have apparently gone off to the games answer to the Golden Saucer, and enjoyed something analogous to the Opera House... and then they get attacked by PSICOM, Sazh reunited with his ludicrously adorable son, and... watches him turn to Crystal, since it seems that his Focus was actually to track down Vanille. And then the PSICOM commander decided to twist the knife a bit further by revealing to him Vanilles roll in... every terrible thing that’s happened to him since the games begun.

Which culminates with them teaming up tobeat up a Go-Kart and then do sick wheelies in it.

We all process grief in different ways.

Sazh also then apparently commits suicide because of... you know... grief... but I’m pretty sure it’s a takeout since he literally just got a new Summon that only works for him in the immediately preceding cutscene.

Sazh doing sick donuts in his new spirit-car and then immediately committing suicide is easily the most awkward mood whiplash in any video game ever.

While not nearly to the extent of 9, I’ve noticed that the game has an above average amount of references to previous FFs; sometimes in place names (like the city of Palomporum, or the airship Lindblum) sometimes in a more thematic way (the war against Pulse as depicted via Hologram Parade feels inspired by the Opera House).

The Sweet Donuts/Suicide, in this case, is snowboarding after Aeris dies.

that's a pretty famous case, but it also takes, like, an entire half-hour. this one is truly the scene which most encapsulates jrpgs, by a long shot. the peak jrpg moment

(the scene in yggdra union between your party's mermaid princess is about the next closest one i can think of. the queen laments how this is the downfall of the kingdom and all, and the princess' response is just..."nietzsche's sorry!" obviously it gets huge bonus points for the completely arbitrary reference in that character's name)
