Let's plan a Metal Gear movie marathon

It is widely known that every movie in existence can be described as some combination of Metal Gear games, differing only in the ratio of their source materials. Hideo Kojima is, after all, 70% made of movies. This gave me the idea to identify the single movie with the strongest correspondence to each game in the series. An expanded version of this concept might include other Hideo Kojima games as well, but let's stick with Metal Gear for the time being. I'm also limiting it to Kojima-directed games even though others in the series could definitely be compared to movies.

I haven't fully decided the appropriate criteria for inclusion, just that if it feels right it should be done. Mere superficial quotations, like going with "Terminator" for "Metal Gear" because the box art has Snake modeled after a still from it, would not be sufficient to justify it - but, on the other hand, extensive aesthetic similarities, such as "Rambo III" for "The Phantom Pain," might overcome thematic differences.

Anyway, here's my first, incomplete draft of the list, but I welcome all suggestions, additions, corrections, etc.

Metal Gear
Solid SnakeEscape from New York (or maybe Escape from L.A.)
The Twin SnakesTwins
Sons of LibertyCaptain America: The Winter Soldier
Snake Eater
Guns of the PatriotsRobocop (2014)
Peace Walker
Ground ZeroesA Few Good Men (really not sure about this one)
The Phantom PainRambo III

The Great Escape served as the basis for Metal Gear before Kojima was told a game about escaping was no good and changed it to a game about infiltrating instead. But there's still a section where Snake gets captured, and freeing POWs is one of the main things you do in the game.

MGS3 would probably be some James Bond film I haven't seen.

Dr. Strangelove wouldn't be a bad fit for Peace Walker, with the theme that measures taken to maintain nuclear deterrence could themselves become the cause of nuclear extinction. WarGames might be even better, with its focus on artificial intelligence escalating a conflict beyond human control.

I like all those ideas, I feel like WarGames for Peace Walker fits with its themes better, although we lose the "Strangelove" correspondence. Don't want them all to be war movies, after all.

We can probably throw in "Tron" for VR Missions, as a gag.

It's been a minute since I've watched the Daniel Craig James Bonds, but I feel like Skyfall is the most accurate analogue for Snake Eater? The only issue is that Craig Bond movies are much more serious than their predecessors, which isn't quite an exact match for Metal Gear.

EDIT: Also second The Rock for Twin Snakes

"Skyfall," "From Russia With Love," or "The Spy Who Came In from the Cold" (which I confess is not James Bond) could all do for Snake Eater, I feel.

"The Rock" for MGS1 is so perfect, but I regret the loss of "Twins" adding genre variety to the proceedings.

Something more contemporary, like Bush-era, would probably fit better for Ground Zeroes, but nothing comes immediately to mind.

How is Twin Snakes NOT Versus? Ryuhei Kitamura was brought on board to direct the cutscenes solely because Kojima liked that movie.

I feel like Skyfall isn't goofy enough to match Snake Eater. Like if you could have the emotion of the latter half of Skyfall, and then half of a super goofy Bond movie like You Only Live Twice, that'd be perfect.

Bongo can correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the sense he only wrote "The Twin Snakes" because he wanted to call everything past Metal Gear by a subtitle, not because he had the MGS1 remake in mind specifically.

Whatever James Bond film I haven't seen that is MGS3 should certainly have been made during the Cold War and have gadgetry on par with a jetpack (if not an actual jetpack).

It should be On Her Majesty's Secret Service, as the first non-Connery Bond movie to match with the first non-Solid Snake. Just as with Connery, Solid Snake returned to the franchise one last time before sitting out the rest of the franchise as its protagonist.

Correct.
