Let's Die One Last Time: LttP Dark Souls III

Yes, it took me this long to play it. I wanted to play them all in order and now here I am. First impressions: I enjoyed Demon's, Dark II, and Bloodborne, but from the get go on this one, it feels like I'm

Got a little too cute with Index Gundyr. I figured I could just dodge dodge dodge because Bloodborne, but the Souls games proper are a little more complicated than that.

At High Lothric Wall now. Index and one of the Hollows on the Wall have popped out a growth that definitely gives Bloodborne vibes. I'm glad I played it first.

Be prepared for lots of random piles of items that seem Bloodborne-esque. DS3 is definitely weird in how it's structured, but definitely also real good. Enjoy!

I wasn’t a fan of the linear layout or the comparatively limited build options, but it’s still a fun game. The real standouts for me were the excellent boss fights.

I can barely remember most of DS3 at this point. Which is a shame because I remember it having my favorite narrative as well as some pretty excellent bosses. I only played through it the one time and I think only did 1 part of the DLC? It's definitely top of my list for Souls game to replay.

I love the Souls lore, but DS3 felt pretty opaque to me, so none of it stuck in my mind. (I also only played the first DLC, for what it's worth.) Genuinely curious, what made this one your favorite?

I really enjoyed DS3, even if it didn't reach quite the same level of depth the other games. The bosses were definitely my favorite part. I'll replay this one again eventually!

If anyone’s on PC and is looking for a run with build variety I highly recommend the Cinders mod. It makes the game easier but it makes a lot more builds viable and adds more shortcuts between areas around so you can sequence skip if you want to.

it also adds in a bunch of weapons and armor from previous games and Bloodborne too, which while kind of excessive is nice nevertheless.

I've been meaning to replay DS3 at some point because I technically never finished the last DLC. I do play on PC but I'd have to wait and do a normal runthrough before I tried that.

Anyway, DS3 is v good, keep us posted

It's been too long since I played it so I can't really speak to specific story beats. But from what I remember: it was a meditation on the nature of "ending" a story and what that could even mean. And specifically for the Dark Souls series it spoke to the futility of the choice a Lord makes to kindle the Flame or not, because ultimately another Lord would just come along eventually and make a different decision anyway, and the world would still keep going with that enforced dichotomy.

It took years before Dark Souls clicked with me, I still dislike Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne was okay but I bounced off of it pretty quick.

Love me some Dark Souls 3, though.

Liking it, though it's taking time to get used to Dark Souls dodging over the tap tap tap of Bloodborne sidestepping. This really feels like a greatest hits of the first four games.

Took a few shots (three) at Vordt. I got the closest the second time, but I was already at a disadvantage because I'd had to heal from overshooting the drop before his room, and then was not expecting his second phase. My third try I just got too greedy. He's not hard to dodge, it's just long wind-up attacks have always been my achilles heel in these games, because they throw off my timing. Will try again tomorrow.

Vordt is down. Pretty great fight, and pretty demanding for how early in the game it is.

Been tooling around the Undead Settlement. The High Wall was kind of meh as levels go, but this area is really good so far.

I don't remember where the real Dark Souls starts in this game off the top of my head so let's just say it's here

I was starting to get frustrated with the Curse Rotted Greatwood until I decided to try a bow during phase 2. Easy Peasy!

Thought Crystal Sage would be a major thorn in my craw. After taking a break and cooling off for a bit, though, it only took a few more tries to beat it. I then helped someone else beat it, which was a good feeling.

I thought the Deacons were going to be a roadblock. Then I realized that once you get a bead on homedude in the second phase you just go HAM. The others don't do that much damage and it's pretty easy to roll away if you need to heal.

Abyss Watchers is the first time I've felt like a boss had outright bad design. Not individually, but the two phases would have been two great bosses separately, but together it felt like going too hard too early. As it is, I felt no qualms recruiting "incel' to help me beat it. Although on my subsequent summon runs for the boss I did draw the line at helping "hitler" beat anything. I noped out of that.

The deacons are actually quite easy to cheese, which I only realized on my like 3rd or 4th time at them. Well, not cheese - it's perfectly legit, it's just a couple items that are both really effective against them, and are super effective when used together. There is a ring that usually doesn't seem very good, the Pontiff's Left Eye Ring. It heals you pretty significantly every X attacks that land in a short amount of time. That's normally pretty hard to do consistently in your normal playing through levels and bosses, but if you have a crowd of enemies and a weapon that can hit quite a few enemies pretty quickly, this translates into a lot of healing, a lot of the time. Something that synergizes really well with the above is the Hollowslayer Greatsword, a boss weapon from the cursed greatwood's soul. Since the deacons all count as hollows, it does bonus damage to them, and since it's a relatively fast greatsword you can slash through crowds of them many at a time and get a lot of healing. When I finally tried the combo on my last run, I just laughed and laughed as I waded into the crowd and mowed them down like grass while keeping myself basically unkillable.

The Abyss Watchers does feel like A Bit Much sometimes, yeah. Figuring out how to let the non-hostile watcher tank some aggro/open up backstabs for you can be a big part of keeping things together in the first half, and then the second is just a pretty straightforward fight. I go back and forth on "excessive" or "awesome" each time I consider it, I think... I'll need to revisit it to be sure. I can totally see how Bloodborne would benefit, the latter part especially seems to have a bit of Lady Maria DNA in it...?

Fought the Stray Demon. Was not expecting it to go down like a chump. Didn't even have a boss bar or theme. Nicely played, From.

Wolnir was kind of lame though. He's not particularly hard, its just that his arms are so big that it's hard to judge his wind-ups.

The Outrider Beast was actually more difficult than some of the bosses. Cool fight though. Going down into Smouldering Lake now.

Pontiff Sulyvahn was pretty tough, but I managed to summon both an NPC and someone who knew what they were doing on the thrid try, thank goodness. I faffed about in the Deon Ruins for a bit, decided overall it was not worth the trouble. So now...

Anor. Fucking. Londo.

Fyonn

did their best!
The one thing I had spoiled for me in the entire game was that moment, which someone just showed me a video of without warning, so it fell completely flat for me when I got there.

I saw that area before I had seen Firelink Shrine and the surrounding environs.
